Parasitic diseases of the small intestinal tract.

The epidemiology, clinical aspects, and treatment of human intestinal infections with Giardia, Cryptosporidium, coccidia and Strongyloides in industrialized countries are reviewed. In well-nourished and immunocompetent persons, inapparent infections or mild, transitory gastrointestinal upsets caused by these parasites are quite common. Some patients develop severe symptoms, such as profuse diarrhoea, dehydration, stool irregularities for weeks or months followed by weight loss and malabsorption of fat, vitamins and iron. In patients receiving immunosuppressive treatment or with lymphotropic vi

[Ophthalmologic complications in chronic inflammatory intestinal diseases].

Through investigations which we performed ophthalmological complications in chronic inflammatory intestinal disease are revealed. It could be demonstrated that in most cases ocular symptoms are associated with joint troubles which in their turn depend on the severity of the general disease. Especially in elderly patients with longstanding history it is important to co-operate with representatives of other medical branches in the control of ocular complaints, since there may quickly occur functional deterioration when the eye is also involved.

Clinical trial methodology in intestinal parasitic diseases.

The high prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections as an index of underdevelopment, especially in tropical countries, is related to poverty, poor housing, lack of sanitation, malnutrition, and ignorance. The effects are lowered work capacity, physical and mental retardation, leading to recurrences and exacerbations of the parasitism and malnutrition. The most prevalent parasites, methods of detection by specific tests in patients in clinical trials involving antiparasitic drugs are dealt with. How and by whom investigations of new drugs should be undertaken, the need for a basic knowledge

Vitamin D and Intestinal Diseases: Impact on Intestinal Immunity and Gut Barrier Function.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Intestinal diseases are a major global health problem due to their high prevalence, chronic course, and significant impact on quality of life. Increasing attention has been given to the extra-skeletal effects of vitamin D, particularly its role in immune regulation, maintenance of intestinal barrier integrity, and modulation of the gut microbiota. The aim of this review was to evaluate current evidence regarding the role of vitamin D in immune regulation, intestinal barrier function, and the pathogenic mechanisms of intestinal diseases, including inflammatory and functio

Current Status of Intestinal Stem Cell Research: Mechanisms, Intestinal Diseases, and Organoid Development.

Intestinal stem cells (ISCs) are essential for maintaining intestinal homeostasis and repairing injury, and have garnered extensive attention in recent years. ISC research has not only advanced our understanding of intestinal physiology but also revealed pathological roles of ISCs in diseases and facilitated the identification of potential targeted therapies. This review aims to comprehensively present the current state of ISC research. It elaborates on the multi-level regulatory mechanisms governing ISCs, including niche cells, signaling pathways, gut microbiota, extracellular matrix, and epi

MicroRNA biosensors for the detection of intestinal diseases.

Intestinal disorders, including colorectal cancer, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis, present considerable health challenges due to their complicated pathogenesis and frequently delayed diagnoses. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), which are small non-coding RNA molecules, play a crucial role in regulating various cellular functions related to intestinal health and disease. Abnormal expression of miRNAs has been associated with the onset and progression of these disorders. In light of the clinical importance of miRNAs in intestinal diseases, there is an increasing interest in creating rapid, sensitive,

Bile Acids, Intestinal Barrier Dysfunction, and Related Diseases.

The intestinal barrier is a precisely regulated semi-permeable physiological structure that absorbs nutrients and protects the internal environment from infiltration of pathological molecules and microorganisms. Bile acids are small molecules synthesized from cholesterol in the liver, secreted into the duodenum, and transformed to secondary or tertiary bile acids by the gut microbiota. Bile acids interact with bile acid receptors (BARs) or gut microbiota, which plays a key role in maintaining the homeostasis of the intestinal barrier. In this review, we summarize and discuss the recent studies

Intestinal barrier functions in hematologic and oncologic diseases.

The intestinal barrier is a complex structure that not only regulates the influx of luminal contents into the systemic circulation but is also involved in immune, microbial, and metabolic homeostasis. Evidence implicating disruption in intestinal barrier functions in the development of many systemic diseases, ranging from non-alcoholic steatohepatitis to autism, or systemic complications of intestinal disorders has increased rapidly in recent years, raising the possibility of the intestinal barrier as a potential target for therapeutic intervention to alter the course and mitigate the complica

Helminths as an alternative therapy for intestinal diseases.

Animal models and clinical studies have shown that helminth infections exert immunomodulatory activity, altering intestinal permeability and providing a potential beneficial action on autoimmune and inflammatory disorders in human beings, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and celiac disease. This is consistent with the theory that intestinal microbiota is responsible for shaping human immunological responses. With the arrival of the immunobiologic era and the use of antibodies, we propose a distinctive pathway for treating patients with IBD and celiac disease. We have some evidence abou

[Intestinal parasitic diseases as a global health problem].

In today's world, parasitic disease agents are not restricted by geography or economy, and have become a significant global threat. The increasing globalization of the fresh produce market and greater international trade and travels, have contributed to the spread of these organisms in the industrialized world. Parasitic protozoa cause waterborne and foodborne outbreaks of diarrhea. The unprecedented flow of people introduces cultural and behavior patterns around the world; the increasing tendency to eat raw or undercooked meat and seafood, favors the dissemination of several parasitic pathoge

Effect of dietary fat on intestinal inflammatory diseases.

Dietary fat has multiple roles on human health, and some dietary fat is used to treat organic diseases because of its anti-inflammatory effect. It is commonly accepted that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) is beneficial on ischemic heart disease or rheumatic arthritis. On the contrary, effect of omega-3-PUFA on Crohn's disease remained controversial. That effect of omega-3 PUFA differs according to the location of inflamed intestine was hypothesized. To elucidate this hypothesis, to investigate the role of dietary fat on disease activity in different kind of murine models of intestina

[Extra-intestinal Manifestations of chronic inflammatory Bowel diseases].

Approximately one third of all patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis suffer from extra-intestinal manifestations of their inflammatory bowel disease. Most commonly those symptoms occur simultaneously with the CED symptoms; they can, however, either precede them or appear later on in the course of the disease. The most frequent extra-intestinal symptoms are arthralgias of peripheral joints and spine, which are usually bland and self-limiting, while ankylosing spondylitis and erosive arthritides are rare. Skin lesion and eye affections can also parallel the bowel condition, but oc
