Case report: Uterine perforation caused by migration of intrauterine devices.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are often considered a form of contraception by women of reproductive age because of their reversible, effective, safe, and convenient nature. However, its complications include bleeding, infection, displacement, and uterine perforation. As most patients do not exhibit any obvious symptoms, they ignore their complications and are unaware of the necessity of regular evaluation. Therefore, they are unable to implement timely interventions for the complications that can result in serious consequences. Although, three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound has demonstrated greater

Management of an Intrauterine Device Migration Resulting in a Pregnancy - Clinical Case.

Intrauterine devices (IUD) are one of the most commonly used methods of contraception worldwide. The long term effect makes it desirable by most patients. The insertion of an IUD is not difficult as a technique but it involves multiple complications such as uterine perforation and migration into the abdominal cavity, urinary bladder perforation, fistula formation, bowel perforation and intra-abdominal adhesions. We present the case of a 31-year-old female patient (para=4) with a medical history of an IUD insertion during her postpartum period in February 2018. In April 2019, during her normal

Intrauterine device migration into the lumen of large bowel: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Colon perforation caused by the intrauterine device (IUD) migration is rare, but severe complication that can occur years after the insertion. Depending on the location of the injured intestine, the different methods for extracting migrated IUD raging from colonoscopy to laparotomy can be chosen. CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old female presented with the discomfort in the epigastric area went to the outpatient clinic. A doctor performed gastroscopy and found a polyp. During a colonoscopy, we found a small solid object protruding through the intestinal wall. CT scan showed IUD li

Migration of intrauterine devices: radiologic findings and implications for patient care.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are a commonly used form of contraception worldwide. However, migration of the IUD from its normal position in the uterine fundus is a frequently encountered complication, varying from uterine expulsion to displacement into the endometrial canal to uterine perforation. Different sites of IUD translocation vary in terms of their clinical significance and subsequent management, and the urgency of communicating IUD migration to the clinician is likewise variable. Expulsion or intrauterine displacement of the IUD leads to decreased contraceptive efficacy and should be c

Migration of an intrauterine contraceptive device to the sigmoid colon: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Copper T intrauterine devices (IUDs) remain the mainstay of family planning measures in developing countries, but have been associated with serious complications such as bleeding, perforation and migration to adjacent organs or omentum. Although perforation of the uterus by an IUD is not uncommon, migration to the sigmoid colon is extremely rare. Here, we report a case of migration of an IUD to the sigmoid colon. CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old woman who had an IUD (Copper T), inserted 1 month after delivery, presented, 7 months later, with secondary amenorrhea and transient pelvic cra

Bladder stones around a migrated and missed intrauterine contraceptive device.

Bladder stones occasionally develop because of foreign bodies in the bladder. Bladder stones in a 30-year-old woman were found to have formed around an intrauterine contraceptive device that had gone missing many years previously and had migrated into the bladder. Plain abdominal radiograms should be a part of the evaluation in patients with a history of an unretrieved intrauterine contraceptive device.

Uterovesical Migration of Copper-containing Intrauterine Device Complicated by Bladder Stone Formation.

Copper-containing intrauterine device (IUD) is a common method of contraception with a low failure rate and high acceptability. However, complications could follow its use including expulsion and migration of the device out of the uterus. When migration occurs, the device could pierce other structures in the pelvis such as the rectum, sigmoid colon, small bowel, or urinary bladder. The pattern of the patient's complaints will guide the clinician on the possible organ involved and the manner of care. This case report presents a 44-year-old woman with IUD migration into the urinary bladder with

Intraluminal Appendiceal Migration of an Intrauterine Device Without Appendicitis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND The intrauterine device (IUD) is a commonly used contraceptive method in emerging countries, such as Mexico and several Latin American nations. IUD insertion is a well-described and relatively simple procedure; however, one of its rare complications is migration to nearby extrauterine structures. CASE REPORT The patient was a 37-year-old woman with a history of cesarean delivery 5 years earlier. After an abortion managed by instrumental uterine curettage in 2024, a copper intrauterine device (IUD) was placed, with no immediate complications. However, 1 month later, she experienced i

Intrauterine contraceptive device migration presenting as abdominal wall swelling: a case report.

A number of complications are reported with the use of intrauterine contraceptive devices. These may pursue asymptomatic course or present as an acute abdomen after migration into peritoneal cavity. The authors here are reporting an abdominal wall swelling caused by transuterine migration of a copper intrauterine contraceptive device in a 28-year-old female. An open approach was used, and impacted foreign body was retrieved.

Removal of Complete Spontaneous Migration of an Intrauterine Contraceptive Device to the Bladder by Cystoscopy.

Intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCD) are widely used as a reversible method of contraception. Although uterine perforation caused by an IUCD is rare, in some cases, the device may migrate to the pelvic/abdominal cavity or nearby structures. When the IUCD migrate to the bladder, it can lead to various symptoms. These include pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen, difficulties or pain during urination, frequent urinary tract infections, and the development of bladder stones. This article presents a case report of a 24-year-old woman with an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) that ha

An Unusual, Delayed Presentation of a Migrated Intrauterine Contraceptive Device Into the Rectosigmoid Colon.

The current literature suggests that serious complications after intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) insertion are rare. We present a rare case of a migrated IUCD into the rectosigmoid colon. A 33-year-old woman (parity one) presented to the emergency department with a three-day history of flank pain, upper urinary tract infection symptoms, and a low-grade fever. Differentials initially included renal colic or pyelonephritis. However, subsequent computed tomography of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder (CT-KUB) and magnetic resonance imaging of the pelvis (MRI-pelvis) showed a migrated IUC

Intrauterine devices migrated into the bladder: two case reports and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine devices (IUD) are widely used all over the world. One of the most serious complications is uterine perforation, and it is very rare for the IUD to penetrate the bladder after perforation. Here we report two cases of IUD migration into the bladder, and review the literature to analyze the possible causes and solutions of such complications. CASE PRESENTATION: Case NO. 1 is a 37-year-old female who presented lower urinary tract symptoms for a year. Cystoscopy showed that a strip of metal penetrated into the bladder, and the surface was covered with stones. The patient u

Hydronephrosis due to a Migrated Intrauterine Device into the Ureter: A Very Rare Case.

Intrauterine device (IUD) insertion is a long-acting and one of the most effective modes of reversible contraception. Complications that most commonly arise following IUD insertion are failed insertion, pain, vasovagal reactions, infection, menstrual abnormalities, and expulsion. In this paper, we present the case of a woman who experienced hydronephrosis due to the migration of IUD into the ureter after 30 years of insertion. To the best of our knowledge, this is the third such case reported in the literature.

Transuterine migration as a complication of intrauterine contraceptive devices: six case reports.

OBJECTIVES: We retrospectively analyzed six cases between 1986 and 2002 that had been operated within our unit with the diagnosis of migration of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD). Although an IUD is an effective contraceptive method, the migration of one is a rare but serious complication. The aim of this report is to emphasize the management and therapy of this complication. CASES: Out of six patients, three patients with occurring pregnancy, two with pelvic pain and one with a missing IUD incidentally diagnosed during a routine follow-up gynecological examination, were admitted to

Migration of an intrauterine device to the posterior urethra with stone formation: a case report.

Migration of an intrauterine device (IUD) to the posterior urethra with stone formation has not been previously reported in the literature. A 42-year-old female patient presented to the gynecology clinic with a complaint of "discovered vaginal mass for 2 years, with growth for 5 days." She was referred to urology on suspicion of IUD migration to the bladder. Physical examination revealed a hard mass palpable on the anterior vaginal wall. Laboratory tests showed normal blood counts, and urinalysis indicated a mild urinary tract infection. Ultrasound and pelvic X-ray indicated IUD migration to t
