Clonorchis sinensis metacercariae must often be stored for several months to meet laboratory requirements. Effects of metabolic inhibitors and ouabain on the rate of afferent discharges from isolated muscle spindle of the bullfrog were examined in vitro to elucidate the mechanism for generating afferent action potentials. A number of different methane-utilizing bacteria are described and compared with isolates of other investigators. The strains can be divided into three groups based on pigmentation, cell morphology and internal membrane structures. A rat model produced by intraaortic injection of sodium iodoacetate was analyzed biochemically. Hind leg muscles obtained from iodoacetate-injected site showed a selective inhibition of the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PD) activity less than 10% of control mean. No loss of mitochondrial enzyme activity was observed. Electrical stimulation at the sciatic nerve revealed muscle contractures and this muscle showed a mild degeneration in histochemically. This study indicates that this model will be useful to study the pathophysiology of human muscle glycogen storage diseases.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of lactic acid accumulation on peak tension and relaxation rate of the isometric twitch. Isolated extensor digitorum longus muscle from rat was stimulated electrically at a frequency of 2/s under anaerobic conditions. Comparison was made with muscles in which glycolysis was blocked with iodoacetic acid (IAA). During the first weeks of life, injury to the central nervous system caused by brief periods of oxygen deprivation greatly increases. To investigate possible causes for this change, the effects of hypoxia or application of the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate on intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) and ATP were studied in rat cerebrocortical brain slices. [Ca2+]i was measured fluorometrically with the indicator Fura-2. Hypoxia (95% N2/5% CO2) or 100 microM sodium cyanide produced gradual elevations in [Ca2+]i and ATP depletion in slices from rats < 2 weeks old, but rapid changes in older rats.

Cyanogen (C2N2), a molecule with properties remarkably similar to carbon dioxide, differentially inhibits three of the four carbonic anhydrases reported here. Bovine carbonic anhydrase II shows 97% loss of esterase activity with no concommitant loss in hydratase activity. The hydratase and esterase activities of human carbonic anhydrase I are decreased by 80% and 55% respectively. Canine carbonic anhydrase shows similar results to human carbonic anhydrase I, retaining 29% hydratase and 62% esterase activity.
