Effects of repeated eccentric and isometric contractions with relatively low loading dose on joint stiffness.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to compare changes in joint stiffness after repeated eccentric (ECC; leading to muscle fatigue) and isometric (ISO; leading to tendon fatigue) contractions and to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for decline in joint stiffness after repeated stretch-shortening cycle exercises reported previously. METHODS: Ankle joint stiffness (change in joint torque divided by change in joint angle during braking phase) and electromyographic activity (mEMG) of the plantar flexor muscles during drop jump using the ankle joint were measured before and after

Effects of Prolonged and Acute Muscle Pain on the Force Control Strategy During Isometric Contractions.

UNLABELLED: Musculoskeletal pain is associated with multiple adaptions in movement control. This study aimed to determine whether changes in movement control acquired during acute pain are maintained over days of pain exposure. On day 0, the extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle of healthy participants was injected with nerve growth factor (NGF) to induce persistent movement-evoked pain (n = 13) or isotonic saline as a control (n = 13). On day 2, short-lasting pain was induced by injection of hypertonic saline into extensor carpi radialis brevis muscles of all participants. Three-dimensional f

History dependence of human muscle-fiber conduction velocity during voluntary isometric contractions.

The conduction velocity (CV) of a muscle fiber is affected by the fiber's discharge history going back ∼1 s. We investigated this dependence by measuring CV fluctuations during voluntary isometric contractions of the human brachioradialis muscle. We recorded electromyogram (EMG) signals simultaneously from multiple intramuscular electrodes, identified potentials belonging to the same motor unit using EMG decomposition, and estimated the CV of each discharge from the interpotential interval. In 12 of 14 subjects, CV increased by ∼10% during the first second after recruitment and then fluctuated

The Influence of Vibration on Muscle Activation and Rate of Force Development during Maximal Isometric Contractions.

At present there appears to be a need for research conducted on the effects of vibration on the contractile ability of skeletal muscle tissue. The aim of this study was to address this issue by examining the effects of a superimposed muscle/tendon vibration at 50.42±1.16 Hz (acceleration 13.24 ± 0.18ms(-2): displacement ≈5mm) on muscular activation and maximal isometric contraction. Sixteen participants with a mean age, body mass, and height of 22 ± 4.4 years, 73.2 ± 11.7 kg and 173.1 ± 9.7 cms, respectively, were recruited for this study. Electromyography and accelerometry from the rectus fem

Metabolic heat production during fatigue from voluntary repetitive isometric contractions in humans.

The effect of repetitive isometric knee extensions on the energy cost of contraction was examined. The rate of temperature rise (dT/dt) was determined in test contractions at 30 and 50% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) force before and during 30% MVC repetitive isometric exercise (RIE) to exhaustion and regularly in a 30-min postexercise recovery period (n = 9). Pulmonary O2 uptake and muscle temperature (Tmus) were determined at regular intervals. During the 30% MVC test contractions, dT/dt was 5.6 +/- 0.6 mK/s in unfatigued muscle, increasing linearly by 68% during exercise. In the 50%

Theta power decreases in preparation for voluntary isometric contractions performed with maximal subjective effort.

In order to find EEG parameters that can be attributed to movements performed with maximal subjective effort, EEG recordings and force measurements were realized in connection with isometric contractions (IMC). IMC were performed with submaximal and maximal subjective effort. Mean spectral power density within the theta band was found as an indicator for maximal subjective effort. The theta power across the parieto-occipital area decreases from rest through movements performed with submaximal force to movements performed with maximal effort. It is argued that this theta decrease possibly refle

Effects of carotid artery occlusion on the pressor response induced by sustained isometric contraction in the cat.

The effects of clonidine, a central alpha 2 agonist, on changes in blood pressure caused by muscle afferent nerve (ergoreceptor) activation and baroreceptor manipulation were studied in cats. Prolonged isometric contractions (ergoreceptor activation) of the gastrocnemius and plantaris muscles increased mean arterial pressure by 53 mmHg. This pressor response was not altered by naloxone (0.5 mumol.litre-1) but was eliminated by clonidine (0.5-2.0 micrograms) when injected into the cerebral aqueduct. Brief occlusion of the carotid artery (15-30 s) caused mean arterial pressure to increase by 32-

Systolic blood pressure responses during isometric contractions of large and small muscle groups.

The purpose of this study was to test for a difference between the systolic blood pressure responses to voluntary contractions of large and small muscle groups of the upper extremity. Systolic blood pressure was measured at approximately 20 sec intervals during sustained isometric contractions of the index finger adductors and handgrip muscles contracting at 40% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Contractions were terminated when EMG activity exceeded 10% of maximal activity of selected accessory muscles or when the 40% MVC tension could no longer be held constant (+/-10%). The slopes of

Myoelectric Fatigue and Motor-Unit Firing Patterns During Sinusoidal Vibration Superimposed on Low-Intensity Isometric Contraction.

Vibration exercise (VE) has shown promising results for improving muscle strength and power performance when superimposed on high-level muscle contraction. However, low-level contraction may be more preferable in many rehabilitation programs due to the weakness of the patients. Unfortunately, the effects and underlying physiological mechanisms of VE superimposed on low-level contraction are unclear. This study aims to investigate the fatiguing effects and motor unit (MU) firing patterns during VE with low-level muscle contraction. Twenty-one healthy participants performed 60-s isometric contra

Trunk muscle co-contraction increases during fatiguing, isometric, lateral bend exertions. Possible implications for spine stability.

STUDY DESIGN: Surface electromyographic activities were recorded from bilateral trunk muscles as test participants maintained a 50% maximum, voluntary, isometric, lateral bend contraction to volitional exhaustion. OBJECTIVES: To challenge the trunk with a prolonged lateral bend task and observe the responses of the agonist and antagonist muscles to the resulting fatigue. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Lateral bend exertions of the trunk have been identified as a risk factor for injury to spine tissues. However, little is known about the response of spine muscles to fatigue and the subsequent im

Isometric cardiac contraction. a possible cause of the disorganized myocardial pattern of idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis.

The bizarre septal architecture of idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis (IHSS) may be secondary to a small systolic cavity with late systolic isometric contraction. We examined ventricular muscle for IHSS-type muscle-fiber disarray in infant hearts in which isometric contraction would occur during development-namely, pulmonary or aortic-valve atresia with intact ventricular septum and normal atrio-ventricular valves. Fifteen patients with aortic atresia and 10 with pulmonary atresia were compared to 25 normal controls of matched age and heart weight. Aortic atresia showed disorganization

Sustained submaximal isometric wrist flexion and wrist extension contractions uniquely impair maximal voluntary contraction force in the antagonist wrist action.

When fatigued, the wrist extensors, which are the primary wrist stabilizers, impair distal upper limb motor performance in a surprisingly similar way as when fatiguing the wrist flexors. It is possible that the wrist extensors are so active as antagonists that they develop an equal degree of fatigue during wrist flexion contractions, making it difficult to truly isolate their impact on performance. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine how wrist flexion/extension forces are impaired following either agonist or antagonist sustained submaximal wrist contractions. 13 male participants at

Isometric Contraction Attenuates Leucine-Stimulated 4E-Binding Protein 1 Phosphorylation in Contralateral Noncontracted Skeletal Muscle in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Skeletal muscle contraction can influence anabolic signaling in distant noncontracted muscle. However, whether unilateral contraction alters nutrient-stimulated mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signaling in contralateral muscle remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine whether unilateral isometric contraction attenuates leucine-stimulated mTORC1 signaling and protein synthesis in contralateral noncontracted muscle in mice. METHODS: Ten-wk-old male C57BL/6J mice fed a standard chow diet (CE-2) were assigned to resting or unilateral isometric cont

High-intensity interval training in the form of isometric contraction improves fatigue resistance in dystrophin-deficient muscle.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a genetic muscle-wasting disorder characterized by progressive muscle weakness and easy fatigability. Here we examined whether high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in the form of isometric contraction improves fatigue resistance in skeletal muscle from dystrophin-deficient mdx52 mice. Isometric HIIT was performed on plantar flexor muscles in vivo with supramaximal electrical stimulation every other day for 4 weeks (a total of 15 sessions). In the non-trained contralateral gastrocnemius muscle from mdx52 mice, the decreased fatigue resistance was associated wit

Strain and Strain Rate Tensor Mapping of Medial Gastrocnemius at Submaximal Isometric Contraction and Three Ankle Angles.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to analyze the muscle kinematics of the medial gastrocnemius (MG) during submaximal isometric contractions and to explore the relationship between deformation and force generated at plantarflexed (PF), neutral (N) and dorsiflexed (DF) ankle angles. METHOD: Strain and Strain Rate (SR) tensors were calculated from velocity-encoded magnetic resonance phase-contrast images in six young men acquired during 25% and 50% Maximum Voluntary Contraction (MVC). Strain and SR indices as well as force normalized values were statistically analyzed using two-way repeate

Prediction of prostatic obstruction with a combination of isometric detrusor contraction pressure and maximum urinary flow rate.

OBJECTIVES: Because isometric detrusor contraction pressure (Piso) increases with outlet obstruction and maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax) tends to decrease with obstruction, we hypothesize that specific criteria consisting of a combination of high Piso and low Qmax may be able to differentiate obstructive from nonobstructive voiding dysfunction better than either parameter alone. METHODS: Two hundred five men with lower urinary tract symptoms underwent uroflowmetry and videourodynamics, including cystometry, continuous outlet occlusion test, and micturitional urethral pressure profilometry. The role of pennation angle and architectural gearing to rate of force development in dynamic and isometric muscle contractions.

BACKGROUND: Associations between muscle architecture and rate of force development (RFD) have been largely studied during fixed-end (isometric) contractions. Fixed-end contractions may, however, limit muscle shape changes and thus alter the relationship between muscle architecture an RFD. AIM: We compared the correlation between muscle architecture and architectural gearing and knee extensor RFD when assessed during dynamic versus fixed-end contractions. METHODS: Twenty-two recreationally active male runners performed dynamic knee extensions at constant acceleration (2000°s-2) and isometric
