Isopod mouthpart traits respond to a tropical forest recovery gradient.

Functional trait ecology has the potential to provide generalizable and mechanistic predictions of ecosystem function from data of species distributions and traits. The traits that are selected should both respond to environmental factors and influence ecosystem functioning. Invertebrate mouthpart traits fulfill these criteria, but are seldom collected, lack standardized measurement protocols, and have infrequently been investigated in response to environmental factors. We surveyed isopod species that consume plant detritus, and tree communities in 58 plots across primary and secondary forests

Structures and absolute configurations of butenolide derivatives from the isopod-associated fungus Pidoplitchkoviella terricola.

In this research, twenty aromatic and branched aliphatic polyketides, including seven previously undescribed butenolide derivatives, piterriones A-G and one known analogue, along with twelve known altenusin derivatives, were isolated from the isopod-associated fungus Pidoplitchkoviella terricola. Their structures were elucidated by analysis of NMR (1D and 2D) and mass spectrometry data, and their absolute configurations were determined by Mosher's method, microscale derivatization, and comparison of their specific rotations and ECD spectra. Dihydroaltenuene B exhibited mushroom tyrosinase inhi

Apparent kleptoparasitism in fish-parasitic gnathiid isopods.

Gnathiid isopods are common external parasites/micropredators that feed on the blood of marine fishes. During the course of processing samples of gnathiid isopods collected from light traps in the central Philippines, we observed a gnathiid attached to and apparently feeding from the abdomen of another gnathiid. Because the abdomens of both gnathiids were enlarged, it was unclear whether one actually fed on the blood meal of the other. Introduction of unfed gnathiids with fed gnathiids revealed that one gnathiid could and did feed on the blood meal of another. This is the first observation of

A collaborative backbone resource for comparative studies of subterranean evolution: The World Asellidae database.

Transition to novel environments, such as groundwater colonization by surface organisms, provides an excellent research ground to study phenotypic evolution. However, interspecific comparative studies on evolution to groundwater life are few because of the challenge in assembling large ecological and molecular resources for species-rich taxa comprised of surface and subterranean species. Here, we make available to the scientific community an operational set of working tools and resources for the Asellidae, a family of freshwater isopods containing hundreds of surface and subterranean species.

Dissecting the costs of a facultative symbiosis in an isopod living with ants.

The balance between costs and benefits is expected to drive associations between species. While these balances are well understood for strict associations, we have no insights to which extent they determine facultative associations between species. Here, we quantified the costs of living in a facultative association, by studying the effects of red wood ants on the facultatively associated isopod Porcellio scaber. Porcellio scaber frequently occurred in and near hostile red wood ant nests and might outnumber obligate nest associates. The facultative association involved different costs for the

PREVALENCE OF THE BOPYRID ISOPOD PROBOPYRUS PANDALICOLA IN DAGGERBLADE GRASS SHRIMP FROM SALT MARSH CREEKS AND PANNES OF CAPE COD, MASSACHUSETTS.

In salt marsh ecosystems, daggerblade grass shrimp, Palaemon (Palaemonetes) pugio, play a crucial role in food webs and serve as the definitive host for the bopyrid isopod Probopyrus pandalicola. These ectoparasites infest the branchial chambers of grass shrimp, which can lead to decreased energy availability and sterilization of infected hosts. Although bopyrid isopod infestation of daggerblade grass shrimp has been frequently reported in literature from coastal marshes of the southeastern United States, the prevalence of this parasite has not been recently documented in daggerblade grass shr

Isopods infesting Atlantic bonefish (Albula vulpes) host novel viruses, including reoviruses related to global pathogens, and opportunistically feed on humans.

Isopods infest fish worldwide, but their role as disease vectors remains poorly understood. Here, we describe infestation of Atlantic bonefish (Albula vulpes) in Belize with isopods in two of three locations studied, with infestation rates of 15 and 44%. Isopods fed aggressively, and infested fish showed missing scales and scars. Gross morphologic and molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed the isopods to cluster within the family Aegidae and to be most closely related to members of the genus Rocinela, which are globally distributed micro-predators of fish. Metagenomic analysis of 10 isopods

First Record of Elasmobranch Hosts for the Gnathiid Isopod Crustacean Thaumastognathia: Description of Thaumastognathia bicorniger sp. nov.

Gnathiid larvae (Crustacea; Isopoda; Gnathiidae) infesting elasmobranch and holocephalan fishes from mainly bathyal depths off Suruga Bay, off Kume-jima Island, and five sites from off Tokyo Bay to Shimoda City, Japan were examined. A total of 1460 gnathiid larvae were sampled from 87 host individuals belonging to seven families and 10 species. The morphology of these larvae was distinguishable from other gnathiid species by the head appendages. These larvae presented two pigmentation patterns, stripes or spots, on their dorsal thoraxes in live specimens. Furthermore, they were determined as t

Comparative Embryology and Transcriptomics of Asellus infernus, an Isopod Crustacean From Sulfidic Groundwater.

Sulfidic caves are harsh and extreme environments characterized by limited oxygen, low pH, and the presence of hydrogen sulfide. Amazingly, animals can live in sulfidic caves, one such animal being Asellus infernus, a representative of the Asellus aquaticus species complex, originating from Movile Cave and from old wells that represent windows of access to a sulfidic groundwater ecosystem located in southeast Romania. Little previous work has been done on lab-reared populations of A. infernus as they have been historically difficult to raise in the lab. Here, we develop resources for A. infern

Prevalence, infestation, and morphological characterization of the fish parasitic isopod Alitropus typus.

The infestation of crustacean parasites affects the freshwater and marine fishes, causing retarded growth rate, reduced production, low reproduction, and mass mortality. Fish parasites from the isopod family Aegidae, in recent years, have received increased global attention due to their serious socio-economic, ecological, and welfare consequences in finfish aquaculture. This is particularly true for the buccal-inhabiting genus Alitropus typus, which has emerged as a major parasitic threat to freshwater and brackishwater fish populations across tropical and subtropical regions, adversely affectin

A review of the endoparasitic isopods (Epicaridea: Entoniscidae) from hermit crabs, including description of the new subfamily Diogenioninae and a new species of Paguritherium Reinhard, 1945 from the Philippines.

Entoniscid isopods (Entoniscidae) are obligate endoparasites of other crustacean species. They have an indirect lifestyle, usually with two hosts and multiple larval stages; as adults they are found living within decapod hosts. Hermit crabs were previously known to be definitive hosts of only two species of entoniscid parasites: Paguritherium alatum, from the east coast of the United States in Pagurus spp. and Diogenion vermifactus from the Red Sea in Diogenes senex. Little beyond the original descriptions of these species has been reported in the literature. Recently, two species of entonisci

First evidence of microplastics in the stygobiotic isopod Creaseriella anops from a karst cenote of the Yucatán peninsula.

The cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula are unique subterranean ecosystems that host stigobiontic fauna, yet contamination of groundwater organisms remains poorly understood. Microplastics (MPs) are emerging pollutants widely documented in aquatic environments, but data on their occurrence in groundwater fauna are scarce. This study provides baseline information on the presence and characteristics of MPs in the stigobiontic isopod Creaseriella anops (Isopoda: Cirolanidae), collected via scuba diving at a depth of 30 m in the Xelactún cenote (Kinchil, Yucatán, México). Organisms were chemically di

Heavy metal uptake, accumulation patterns, and ecotoxicological responses in terrestrial isopods: a review.

Soil heavy metal contamination poses persistent ecological risks to terrestrial ecosystems. Woodlice (Oniscidea), also known as terrestrial isopods, are important soil decomposers with strong capacities for heavy metal accumulation and detoxification. This review synthesizes current knowledge regarding heavy metal accumulation, distribution, physiological effects and ecological implications in woodlice. Heavy metals are predominantly accumulated in the hepatopancreas in woodlice, the principal organ for metal sequestration and detoxification. Copper generally exhibits higher bioconcentration f

Low susceptibility of invasive red lionfish (Pterois volitans) to a generalist ectoparasite in both its introduced and native ranges.

Escape from parasites in their native range is one of many mechanisms that can contribute to the success of an invasive species. Gnathiid isopods are blood-feeding ectoparasites that infest a wide range of fish hosts, mostly in coral reef habitats. They are ecologically similar to terrestrial ticks, with the ability to transmit blood-borne parasites and cause damage or even death to heavily infected hosts. Therefore, being highly resistant or highly susceptible to gnathiids can have significant fitness consequences for reef-associated fishes. Indo-Pacific red lionfish (Pterois volitans) have i

Sex-specific survival and absence of Wolbachia-mediated protection during invertebrate iridescent virus 31 infection in Armadillidium vulgare.

Invertebrate Iridescent Virus 31 (IIV-31, or Iridovirus armadillidium1) is a large double-stranded DNA virus that induces iridescence and high mortality in terrestrial isopods. Despite its broad distribution, its pathogenic mechanisms and interactions with host immunity and endosymbionts are poorly understood. We examined the effects of IIV-31 infection on survival, hemocyte concentration and viability, septicemia, and viral load in Armadillidium vulgare, while testing for protective effects of the feminizing endosymbiont Wolbachia (wVulC strain). Virgin adults from asymbiotic (males and femal

Spatial variation in the parasitic isopod load of the Japanese halfbeak in western Japan.

Cymothoid isopods (family Cymothoidae) are commonly found parasitizing diverse fishes, including commercial species. However, the effects of these parasites on host body condition are still poorly known. Here we investigated the spatial variation of the effects of parasite infection on host body condition, using the parasitic load of the cymothoid Mothocya parvostis on the Japanese halfbeak Hyporhamphus sajori at 4 sampling sites in western Japan. M. parvostis prevalence at each site (41.6-74.4%) was higher than that known for other fish host-cymothoid systems (usually less than 30%). The numb

Benign effect of the fish parasitic isopod Ceratothoa cf. imbricata on Selenotoca multifasciata (Scatophagidae) from Australia.

The tongue-biter cymothoid isopod Ceratothoa cf. imbricata is nearly ubiquitous in buccal cavities of the banded scat Selenotoca multifasciata (Scatophagidae) from Waterloo Bay, south-east Queensland. To test whether infestation affects fish growth or condition significantly, we explored parasitism and condition in 122 S. multifasciata specimens. The internal area of the buccal cavity and that occupied by ovigerous female isopods were measured, allowing the relative proportion of free internal area of the buccal cavity (PFIAO) to be calculated. Of 122 fish, 119 (97.5%) were infected; 35.3% had
