Around 150 million years ago, eusocial termites evolved from within the cockroaches, 50 million years before eusocial Hymenoptera, such as bees and ants, appeared. Here, we report the 2-Gb genome of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica, and the 1.3-Gb genome of the drywood termite Cryptotermes secundus. We show evolutionary signatures of termite eusociality by comparing the genomes and transcriptomes of three termites and the cockroach against the background of 16 other eusocial and non-eusocial insects. Dramatic adaptive changes in genes underlying the production and perception of pherom

As a result of our field surveys, a new population of the Dao Frog, Amolops daorum (Bain, Lathrop, Murphy, Orlov & Ho, 2003), was found in Son La Province, northern Vietnam, and its identification was based on molecular and morphological analyses. To date, knowledge about the natural history of this species is scarce, including data on its dietary ecology. Using the stomach-flushing method, we analyzed stomach contents of 132 individuals (81 males and 51 females) of A. daorum. We found 501 prey items (458 invertebrates, one vertebrate, and 15 unidentified items), belonging to 11 insect orders

Termite infestation poses a critical threat to ancient timber structures because hidden in-wood activity can cause progressive structural decay before visible surface symptoms appear. Through-wood termite detection remains challenging because termite-induced electromagnetic responses are weak, small-scale, and vulnerable to timber attenuation and multipath propagation. To address this problem, this study presents one of the first investigations to formulate through-wood termite detection as a multi-frequency wireless sensing and image-wireless fusion problem for non-destructive heritage timber

Venoms are complex chemical arsenals that have evolved across various animal lineages for predation, defence, and other ecological functions. In predatory species, venom composition is often shaped by diet, potentially leading to unique toxin profiles. Spiders are the most diverse group of terrestrial venomous predators, yet the venoms of most species, including highly specialised stenophagous species with narrow trophic niches, remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the venom of Ammoxenus amphalodes, a spider that preys exclusively on termites, to explore its molecular compo

BACKGROUND: The importance and impact of invasive species are usually considered based on their economic implications, particularly the direct damage that they cause. The West Indian drywood termite Cryptotermes brevis (Walker) is an example and is a concern in structural lumber, furniture, and other wood products. Despite its importance, its tropical wood preferences and the wood physical characteristics contributing to resistance have not been investigated to date. Here, we developed wood testing units to allow the X-ray recording of termite colonization and then subsequently tested tropical

Asexual lineages are rare in social animals with biparental care, where successful reproduction typically requires coordinated behavior between two individuals of opposite sex. Male-less lineages of the termite Glyptotermes nakajimai provide a unique opportunity to unravel how sexual reproduction can be lost in such animals. Here, we show that modification of the mate-pairing process predated the evolution of asexual populations. Termite colonies are typically initiated by a mating pair that searches for a nest site through a tandem courtship behavior. Our comparative analysis of tandem runnin

Myrmecophagy is one of the most common types of dietary specialization among predators. It can include exploitation of ants, termites, or both. Although ants and termites share a few traits, they are distantly related and possess different defensive mechanisms. Therefore, adaptations to ants and termites should differ, especially in arthropod predators of similar body size as their prey. We investigate offensive and defensive adaptations in Zodariidae spider genus Diores, reported to feed on termites. The ancestral state reconstruction of the diet favored termitophagy for the genus, but metaba

Giardia comprises one genus with several morphologically distinct species described in mammals (including humans, marsupials, rodents), birds, and amphibians. This group of protists provokes diarrhoea diseases in humans and animals worldwide. Transmission of the parasite occurs through the faecal-oral route. Regarding the presence of Giardia in invertebrates, some works have shown that flies can transmit Giardia cysts by contact and transport between contaminated faeces and food. In this way, flies would eventually transmit this parasite. To date, Giardia's presence in the gut of other inverte

The association of the gut flagellates Mixotricha paradoxa and Deltotrichonympha sp. from the termite Mastotermes darwiniensis with ectobiotic spirochetes and bacterial rods is investigated with light and electron microscopy. Treatment with different chemicals disturbing molecular interactions and use of the freeze-fracture and freeze-etch technique show that hydrophobic interactions and integral membrane proteins seem to be involved in the firm attachment at the contact sites. Application of antibiotics reduces the number of ectobionts and leads to a disintegration of the cortical attachment

The differentiation of workers into supplementary reproductives (ergatoids) is an important component of reproductive plasticity in termites, but the behavioral and physiological changes accompanying this transition remain incompletely understood. We used Reticulitermes chinensis (Snyder) to examine allogrooming, locomotor behavior, egg production, enzyme activity, and gene expression during the worker-to-ergatoid transition. The first ergatoids appeared within 2 days after orphaning, and female ergatoids outnumbered male ergatoids. Ergatoids that survived to the end of the observation period

Mixotricha paradoxa is a large cellulolytic flagellate present in the hindgut of the termite Mastotermes darwiniensis. This parabasalid flagellate is unique in its reliance on ectosymbiotic spirochetes for motility. We analyzed the transcriptome of M. paradoxa and the genomes of the ectosymbiotic spirochete Propulsinema mixotrichae ("Treponematales"), the rod-shaped ectosymbiont Synergitannerella mixotrichae (Bacteroidales), and the endosymbiont Endomicrobiellum mixotrichae (Endomicrobiales), all of which are obligately associated with M. paradoxa and were taxonomically described in this study

We report on the use of nitric oxide-mediated transcriptional activation (NOMETA) as an innovative means to detect and access new classes of microbial natural products encoded within silent biosynthetic gene clusters. A small library of termite nest- and mangrove-derived fungi and actinomyces was subjected to cultivation profiling using a miniaturized 24-well format approach (MATRIX) in the presence and absence of nitric oxide, with the resulting metabolomes subjected to comparative chemical analysis using UPLC-DAD and GNPS molecular networking. This strategy prompted study of Talaromyces sp.

Cryptotermes brevis is one of the most destructive invasive termites in the subtropics and tropics and is a common biosecurity intercept at the Australian border. Drywood termite species are cryptic and difficult to identify morphologically in situations when soldiers or imagos are unavailable. We developed a novel DNA based loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay to detect C. brevis and differentiate it from other drywood termites. Validated voucher specimens of 30 different drywood termite species were obtained from several insect collections from which DNA was extracted and ampl

Pangolins are myrmecophagous mammals whose biology and ecology remain poorly studied. Termite mandibles and ant head capsules are the two primary remains found in pangolin feces. Determining the retention time of insect cuticles is important for understanding the digestive physiology of pangolins, while determining the recovery rate of termites and ants in feces is required to estimate the number of these prey items that are consumed by pangolins. In this study, the authors conducted feeding trials with captive Chinese pangolins (Manis pentadactyla). Sixty grams of the fungus-growing termite O

The aim of this study was to determine specific distribution of metals in the termite Tumulitermes tumuli (Froggatt) and identify specific organs within the termite that host elevated metals and therefore play an important role in the regulation and transfer of these back into the environment. Like other insects, termites bio-accumulate essential metals to reinforce cuticular structures and utilize storage detoxification for other metals including Ca, P, Mg and K. Previously, Mn and Zn have been found concentrated in mandible tips and are associated with increased hardness whereas Ca, P, Mg an

Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0 has been shown to suppress the growth of a wide range of microbial plant pathogens as well as invertebrate pests such as root nematodes. Hydrogen cyanide, a secondary metabolite produced by the bacterium, has been credited as being one of the determinants of its biocontrol ability. The use of biocontrol agents against social insect pests such as termite Odontotermes obesus has limitations because of behavioural adaptations that include (1) removal of the pathogen when grooming by the termites and (2) isolation of infested members of the colony. In this study, we sh

Isotope microscopic imaging and atmospheric pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (AP-MALDI-MSI) provide powerful, complementary approaches for visualizing metabolic dynamics in biological tissues. This study applied these techniques to termite workers fed with 13C-labeled cellulose for 1 week. Termites are classified as eusocial insects because of their colonies' clear division of labor. The two primary castes in their life cycle are reproductive (king and queen), responsible for reproduction, and non-reproductive (workers and soldiers), who handle tas
