A 50-year-old woman was treated intermittently with itraconazole (Trisporal) due to onychomycosis. After the initial period of 7 days and after the first 9 days of the second period she experienced abdominal complaints. In the second episode, pancreatitis was diagnosed. No known risk factors for acute pancreatitis were present. The pancreatitis may have arisen due to the use of itraconazole. BACKGROUND: Onychomycosis and dermatomycoses can result in serious complications in patients with underlying chronic diseases such as diabetes. To avoid these complications, these dermatological disorders need to be treated efficiently, for example with the triazole antifungal itraconazole. Pityriasis versicolor is a common superficial fungal infection caused by Malassezia species. It has a high incidence and prevalence in tropical climates. Itraconazole was used in 35 cats with cryptococcosis. Treatment response was determined by comparing clinical signs before, during, and after treatment. It could not be evaluated in 7 cats because they died during treatment from causes unrelated to cryptococcosis. Four patients with deep mycoses were treated with itraconazole. Two patients had chromoblastomycosis, one patient each had aspergillosis and Rhinofacial zygomycosis. These patients were either resistant to or showed poor response to Amphotericin B and/or ketoconazole. After the initial clinical and mycological evaluation, itraconazole was given in a daily dose of 200 mg orally. All patients responded to the drug very well. No adverse effects attributable to itraconazole were detected.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a disease produced by several species of protozoa of the Leishmania genus. These protozoa are injected into the human bloodstream by sandflies. The symptomathology, either cutaneous, mucocutaneous or visceral, depends on the infective species and the immune status of the patient. Antimonial drugs are the mainstay treatment for all the clinical forms of the disease. Amphotericin B is the second-choice drug.
