Multifocal Central Giant Cell Granuloma - A Case Report.

Central giant cell granuloma is a benign, aggressive neoplasm composed of multinucleated giant cells that almost exclusively occurs in the jaws though extra- gnathic incidence is rare. Multifocal CGCGs of the jaws are very rare and suggestive of systemic diseases such as hyperparathyroidism, an inherited syndrome such as Noonan- like multiple giant cell lesion syndrome or other disorders.Very few cases of multifocal CGCGs in the jaws without any concomitant systemic disease have been reported. This paper describes an unusual case reported to the Oral Surgery Department of Dr. D.Y.Patil Dental

Consolidation of Tumorous Mandibular Ramus Defect During Denosumab Treatment for Rapidly Progressive Metastatic Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacological inhibition of osteoclast activity is an essential component of oncological therapy for patients with bone metastases. In rare cases, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) is observed. MRONJ can cause bone defects not inferior to primary or metastatic jaw neoplasms. Oral examination of patients on osteoclast-inhibiting medication aims to identify risk factors at an early stage and to initiate therapy. The current focus on osteoclast-inhibiting drugs in the maxillofacial region is MRONJ. Effects of the substances other than MRONJ are rarely reported. C

Mandibular Myofibroma and Severe Trismus: A Complex Case and Review of Complications.

A female child was investigated for insidious onset of temporomandibular joint dysfunction and trismus in the setting of a mandibular myofibroma. Myofibromas, benign mesenchymal neoplasms composed of spindle cells, are rarely found in the oral cavity, most commonly in the mandible. These lesions are historically described as indolent with a high cure rate and minimal recurrence rates following surgical resection. The patient initially presented with concerns regarding snoring, retrognathia, and jaw ankylosis, as well as a history of trouble latching as an infant but without obvious physical de

Burkitt's-like lymphoma of T-cell type.

Over an 8-yr period, we studied 29 cases of Burkitt's/Burkitt's-like lymphoma and unexpectedly found 2 Burkitt's-like cases of the T-cell type. One case presented as diffuse adenopathy in a 35-yr-old male. A second case presented as a jaw mass in a 2-yr-old girl with Down's syndrome. Histologically, each case demonstrated usual Burkitt's-like morphology (intermediate-size cells with high nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio, 1 to 3 prominent nucleoli, high mitotic rate, basophilic cytoplasm, and cytoplasmic vacuolation). Ultrastructural morphometric data corroborated the Burkitt's-like nature of these ne

Ameloblastic carcinoma of the mandible.

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastic carcinoma is a rare, aggressive odontogenic neoplasm of the jaws in which the epithelial cells exhibit cytologic features of recognizable ameloblastoma and malignancy. Cases with metastasis have been infrequently reported. METHODS: A case of a 64-year-old white woman with mandibular ameloblastic carcinoma with documented distant metastasis is presented. The patient's presenting symptoms included facial asymmetry of the right jaw over 2 months and the development of moderate trismus. Clinical manifestations, pathology, treatment, and biologic behavior are discussed. Th

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor, mixed connective tissue variant, of the mandible: report of a case and review of the literature.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome that results in renal phosphate wasting with hypophosphatemia. In most cases, the underlying cause of TIO is a small mesenchymal neoplasm that is often difficult to detect, resulting in delayed diagnosis. One such neoplasm is the phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor, mixed connective tissue variant (PMTMCT), an unusual entity with unique morphologic and biochemical features. Most of these tumors are found at appendicular sites with only rare cases reported in the jaws. We describe a PMTMCT involving the mandible in a patient with a p

A large osteoid osteoma of the mandibular condyle causing conductive hearing loss: a case report and review of literature.

Osteoid osteomas are benign skeletal neoplasms that are commonly encountered in the bones of the lower extremities, but are exceedingly rare in jaw bones with a prevalence of less than 1%. This unique clinical entity is usually seen in younger individuals, with nocturnal pain and swelling as its characteristic clinical manifestations. The size of the lesion is rarely found to be more than 2 cm. We hereby report a rare case of osteoid osteoma originating from the neck of the mandibular condyle that grew to large enough proportions to result in conductive hearing loss in addition to pain, swelli

Pathological conditions of the mandible: their effect on the radiographic appearance of the inferior dental (mandibular) canal.

Whilst the special anatomical features of the mandible may make radiographic comparison of jaw lesions with similar conditions in other bones more difficult, the changes that occur in respect to the mandibular canal and the teeth may in themselves aid diagnosis. Benign cysts and neoplasms generally cause a displacement of the mandibular canal, but its cortical plate remains intact, Severe infections and malignant tumours result in an irregular erosion of bone and loss of the sclerotic outlines of the canal.

Recurrent uterine adenofibroma revealed to be hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor syndrome: Case report.

Uterine adenofibroma was previously classified as a benign mixed epithelial and mesenchymal tumor, but the WHO removed it from its fifth edition due to diagnostic overlap with low-grade adenosarcoma or benign polyps. We report a case of a 21-year-old woman with a recurrent uterine polypoid tumor initially diagnosed as adenofibroma on biopsy and resected multiple times. MRI revealed heterogeneous intrauterine masses with cystic changes, and PET-CT showed weak FDG uptake. Eventually, hysterectomy confirmed adenofibroma. She also had a prior diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism caused by para

Non-Hodgkins lymphoma of maxilla: A rare entity.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas are a group of neoplasms that originate from the cells of the lymphoreticular system. Forty percent of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas arise from extra nodal sites. Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas detected primarily in the bone are quite rare, but among jaw lesions, they are more frequently present in the maxilla than in the mandible. There are no classical characteristic clinical features of lymphomas involving the jaw bones. Swelling, ulcer or discomfort may be present in the region of the lymphoma, or it may mimic a periapical pathology or a benign condition. Extranodal non-Hodgkins

Chronic dental infections mimicking temporomandibular disorders.

BACKGROUND: Trismus and jaw pain are not only caused by temporomandibular disorders (TMD), but also by various pathologies, namely infection, trauma, or neoplasms. TMD-like symptoms, as a result of the pathologies, may be confusing to a clinician. This paper reports two cases of chronic dental infection mimicking TMD. METHODS: Two patients were initially diagnosed with, and treated for, TMD. However the patients did not respond to the treatment. Limited range of motion and jaw pain were then clinically evaluated for differential diagnoses. Laboratory examinations and computerized tomography (

[Langerhans histiocytosis and panhypopituitarism in adults. Case report].

Langerhans-cells Histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disease characterized by the clonal proliferation of immature dendritic cells that locally or diffusely infiltrate different systems, mainly affecting children. We present the case of a 38-year-old man with a long-standing history of multiple tooth loss without association with trauma, smoking, or poor dental hygiene. Skull computed tomography (CT) showed multiple lytic jaw lesions. Jaw biopsy and immunohistochemical results were compatible with the finding of LCH. The patient evolved with polyuria, polydipsia, and nocturia, confirming the presenc

Multiple hereditary infundibolocystic basal cell carcinoma: report of a sporadic case with a novel pathogenic germline variant in SUFU.

Dear Editor, Germline loss-of-function variants in SUFU (MIM*607035), a component of the Hedgehog (HH) signaling pathway, have been associated with multiple hereditary infundibulocystic basal cell carcinoma (iBCC, MIM#604451). This is a yet undefined clinicopathological entity with features that are often distinct from basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS, MIM#109400). In carriers of germline SUFU variants, basaloid neoplasms tend to arise at a later age compared with BCNS; the iBCC subtype is more frequently observed, and jaw cysts have not been reported. [...].

Dental radiology and oral pathology.

This article represents an overview of normal and pathological findings of the oral structures for the practicing radiologist. Some of the disease processes discussed are of dental etiology, whereas others are manifestations of systemic diseases. Normal tooth development is described followed by an overview of radiolucent, radiopaque, and mixed lucent-opaque lesions. In the radiolucent category, normal anatomical landmarks of the jaws include the mental foramen, manidbular canal, incisive canal and maxillary sinuses. Other lucencies that represent normal structures or variations include develo

Multiple Distinct Neoplasms in a North African Hedgehog (Atelerix algirus).

This paper describes the clinical and pathological features of 4 different tumors, located in the integumentary, digestive, and endocrine systems, presenting in a North African hedgehog (Atelerix algirus). A 3.5-year-old female hedgehog was presented with a cutaneous mass on the right flank. The lesion consisted of a well-differentiated dermal mast cell tumor with no recurrence and metastasis after complete surgical excision. Six months later, the hedgehog developed a mass in the left lower jaw, lethargy, anorexia, and progressive weight loss. Clinical and radiographic evaluations revealed swe

Unicystic Ameloblastoma (UA): A Case Series.

Ameloblastomas are true benign tumors of odontogenic epithelial origin mostly seen in the mandible. After odontoma, it is the second most commonly seen odontogenic neoplasm. Ameloblastomas comprise several clinical, radiological, and histological varieties, making them the most significant odontogenic neoplasm. Unicystic ameloblastomas (UAs) refer to those cystic lesions that show clinical, radiographic, or gross features of jaw cysts but on histologic examination, they show a typical ameloblastomatous epithelium lining the cysts' cavities, with or without luminal and/or mural tumor proliferat

Central angioleiomyoma of the mandible: A rare entity.

The leiomyoma is a benign smooth-muscle neoplasm commonly found in the female genital tract, gastrointestinal tract, or skin. Leiomyomas of the oral cavity are unusual. Oral leiomyomas are uncommon due to the paucity of the smooth muscle in the mouth (except in blood vessels) and thus the involvement of jaw bones is extremely rare. Leiomyomas have been classified as solid angiomyoma, angioleiomyoma (vascular leiomyoma), and epithelioid variants. Angioleiomyomas are benign mesenchymal tumors derived from smooth muscle, which rarely occur in the oral cavity. Malignant transformation probably doe

[Mixed odontogenic tumors in children and adolescents].

Mixed odontogenic tumors in the jaws of children and adolescents usually cause dentition anomalies. The typical forms of these are ameloblastic fibroma, ameloblastic fibroodontoma, complex odontoma and compound odontoma. In the present study mixed odontogenic tumor cases are presented in patients under 20 years of age. All of them were associated with tooth eruption disturbances. Further aim of this study was to discuss the nature and interrelationships of this group of lesions. Ameloblastic fibromas (AFs) are true, mixed, soft tissue neoplasms, deriving from the proliferation of both odontoge

Features of Histogenesis of Organ-Specific Regenerate in the Experiment.

Bone volume restoration is of particular importance when planning orthopedic treatment based on dental implants. Bone deficiency resulting from tooth loss, injuries, jaw neoplasms, or inflammatory diseases excludes the possibility of implant placement without special preparation. Autograft is the "gold standard" of osteoplastic material, but the limited volume and additional traumatization make it difficult to use. Prospects for the restoration of bone defects are opened by a 3D tissue-engineered osteograft obtained by direct differentiation from a chondrograft in an osteogenic medium in vitro

Peripheral osteoma of the maxillofacial region: a study of 10 cases.

UNLABELLED: Peripheral osteoma is a benign neoplasm, with low recurrence rate. Its incidence is rare in the jaws and the mandible is more affected than the maxilla. In most cases it is discovered during routine radiographic examinations. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to show the author's experience regarding the treatment of this neoplasm. METHODS: A retrospective study from January 2002 to December 2007 including ten cases of peripheral osteoma in the maxillofacial region which were treated surgically by removal of the lesion followed by histological confirmation. None of the cases we
