Employment insecurity and binge drinking in the United States: Implications of unemployment insurance.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine whether employment transitions are associated with within-person variation in binge drinking and whether unemployment insurance may buffer this risk. METHODS: Using 19 waves of data from the Understanding America Study (May 2020-March 2021; N = 1710) in the United States, mixed-effects models examined within-person associations between employment transitions and binge drinking days. Postestimation contrasts evaluated restorative changes associated with upward employment transitions. RESULTS: Shifts from secure employment to underemployment (β = 0.033, p

Medical Brain Drain: The Role of Job Attributes and Individual Traits.

Medical brain drain poses a major challenge for health systems, reducing physician supply and undermining public investment in medical training. Prior work examined migration flows and their macroeconomic determinants. This study uses a discrete choice experiment to assess how individual background and personality traits shape medical student intentions to migrate and whether job attributes are valued differently at home and abroad. We surveyed 527 senior medical students from 12 Italian universities between November 2020 and July 2021, using Italy as a pertinent case given high physician emig

Resilience during Crisis and the Role of Age: Involuntary Telework during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

We investigated the relationship between age, resilience, job demands and resources, and self-regulation in 1715 university employees during the COVID-19 pandemic (February 2021) by means of an online survey with closed and open questions. Correlation, regression, and qualitative analyses showed that older employees reported higher resilience than younger employees. This finding was robust after controlling for background factors (i.e., gender, expat status, job type, living alone). Age and resilience were directly related to higher job resources (i.e., job security and equipment), work-life b

Doing better but feeling worse. Looking for the "best" job undermines satisfaction.

Expanding upon Simon's (1955) seminal theory, this investigation compared the choice-making strategies of maximizers and satisficers, finding that maximizing tendencies, although positively correlated with objectively better decision outcomes, are also associated with more negative subjective evaluations of these decision outcomes. Specifically, in the fall of their final year in school, students were administered a scale that measured maximizing tendencies and were then followed over the course of the year as they searched for jobs. Students with high maximizing tendencies secured jobs with 2

What types of jobs do people with disabilities want?

INTRODUCTION: Do non-employed people with disabilities want to work, and if so, what types of jobs do they want? Researchers seeking to explain the low employment rate among people with disabilities have focused primarily on skill gaps, employment disincentives from disability income, accommodation mandates, and (to a lesser extent) employer attitudes and unwelcoming corporate cultures. There has been little attention paid to the attitudes of non-employed people with disabilities. METHODS: This paper uses the 2006 General Social Survey, a representative national survey of US adults that has d

Artificial intelligence exceeds humans in epidemiological job coding.

BACKGROUND: Work circumstances can substantially negatively impact health. To explore this, large occupational cohorts of free-text job descriptions are manually coded and linked to exposure. Although several automatic coding tools have been developed, accurate exposure assessment is only feasible with human intervention. METHODS: We developed OPERAS, a customizable decision support system for epidemiological job coding. Using 812,522 entries, we developed and tested classification models for the Professions et Catégories Socioprofessionnelles (PCS)2003, Nomenclature d'Activités Française (NA

Job loss and mental health: The role of anticipation and re-employment in recovery patterns.

Job loss is known to adversely affect mental health, but the time course of recovery and the role of anticipation remain unclear. Using 22 annual waves (2001-2022) of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey, we estimate fixed-effects models to examine the relationship between redundancy and mental health (SF-36), incorporating subjective probability of job loss to refine anticipation measures. The final sample consists of 14,195 individuals and 4251 redundancy events. Three key findings emerge. First, we document a generalized decline in mental health prior to job

Job stressors and incident lipid-lowering medications in the working population: prospective results from the national French ESPS survey.

The objectives were to explore the prospective associations between job stressors and incident lipid-lowering medications in a nationally representative sample of the working population. The data of the periodic national French ESPS survey of 2010, 2012, and 2014 linked to the national health insurance database, were used. The study sample included 8231 workers, without lipid-lowering medications within the 6 months preceding survey wave. Quantitative demands, low freedom at work, job insecurity, and tension with the public predicted incident lipid-lowering medications over a 2-year follow-up.

Adolescent loneliness and precarious employment in young adulthood: The moderating role of school attachment.

Young adults are increasingly exposed to precarious employment, yet little is known about how early-life social experiences relate to labor-market outcomes in adulthood. Drawing on life-course perspectives, this study examines whether adolescent loneliness is associated with precarious employment in young adulthood and whether school and neighborhood attachment moderate this association. We used longitudinal data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Adolescent loneliness was measured in Wave I, and precarious employment was assessed in young adulthood (Wave IV).

Health as a rich people's game through the lens of work and income.

BACKGROUND: The growing reliance on precarious employment —work that is uncertain, insecure, and unstable —has transformed work for many from a resource to a vulnerability for health and well-being. METHODS: Using longitudinal data from the NLSY79 cohort (n ≈ 6,666) in the United States, we focused on two social determinants of health (SDOH), work and family income. We examine work schedule and income patterns between ages 22 and 49, explicitly building upon the life course lens to answer how such patterns before age 50 may shape future health outcomes at age 50. We used sequence analysis to c

Precarious employment and the onset of depressive symptoms and problematic alcohol use in middle-aged or older workers: A Korean longitudinal study (2006-2022).

Although precarious employment (PE) has emerged as a growing public health concern, research on older adults is scarce. This study explored the associations between PE and the onset of depressive symptoms and problematic alcohol use among middle-aged and older workers. A total of 2536 Korean waged workers aged ≥45 years contributed 8486 observations from 2006 to 2022. PE was defined as a multidimensional construct that includes employment insecurity, income inadequacy, and a lack of worker rights and protection. Depressive symptoms and problematic alcohol use were assessed using the Center for

Predictors of youth unemployment duration and impact evaluation of job creation program in East Gojjam Zone.

Youth unemployment in the East Gojjam Zone is a critical issue. This study focuses on identifying the factors that influence unemployment duration and evaluating the impact of job creation programs on the well-being of youth in this region. We employed Cox regression to analyze the determinants of unemployment duration and used propensity score matching to assess the welfare effects of job creation initiatives. Our multistage cluster sampling revealed a youth unemployment rate of 33.3% (95% CI: 27.3-39.3). Over half of the unemployed youth transitioned to employment within four years, with 25%

Job loss and reemployment of newly diagnosed people with epilepsy: A nationwide cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy has negative socioeconomic impacts on those affected, resulting not only from actual disability but also from social stigma. However, longitudinal studies examining occupational consequences following an epilepsy diagnosis are limited. We aimed to investigate the occupational outcomes of newly diagnosed epilepsy among Korean employees. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide population-based retrospective cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. We included newly diagnosed people with epilepsy (PWE) aged 25 to 54 years, identified by diagnostic

The Effects of Inmate Medical Issues on Correctional Staff Job Involvement and Organizational Commitment.

In the United States, institutional corrections is a major undertaking that requires substantial financial resources. Correctional staff are the essential element to ensuring the safety and security of these institutions, which house approximately 2.2 million adults. Thus, it is invaluable to explore work environment variables that contribute to their success. One area that has received scant attention is staff views of inmate medical care and their effect on job involvement and organizational commitment. This study focused on the effects of views concerning the proper handling of inmate infec
