Generative AI-Assisted Medical Illustrations in Pediatric Neurosurgery : Workflows, Ethical Safeguards, and Journal Policy Considerations.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative tool for creating high-quality visual materials in medical research and education. In pediatric neurosurgery, where ethical and legal constraints limit the use of real patient photographs, AI-assisted illustrations offer significant potential. However, concerns regarding clinical accuracy, intellectual property, and the protection of vulnerable pediatric patients necessitate rigorous oversight. We present a human-in-the-loop workflow that integrates generative AI with vector-based digital editing to produce scientifically

Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) usage guidelines for scholarly publishing: a cross-sectional study of medical journals.

BACKGROUND: Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) has developed rapidly and been increasingly used in scholarly publishing, so it is urgent to examine guidelines for its usage. This cross-sectional study aims to examine the coverage and type of recommendations of GAI usage guidelines among medical journals and how these factors relate to journal characteristics. METHODS: From the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) list for medicine in 2022, we generated two groups of journals: top SJR ranked journals (N = 200) and random sample of non-top SJR ranked journals (N = 140). For each group, we examined

A Review of Open Access, No-Fee Journals Indexed in PubMed and Scopus for Publishing Image Reports in Medical Research.

BACKGROUND: Aspects of medicine can be conveyed through paradigmatic images (anatomical-surgical, radiological, microscopic) in image reports, a type of article more immediate than case reports. The aim of this review is to find journals allowing the publication of image reports and that are free of charge, open access and indexed in the best databases. METHODS: The search started with a Boolean string and followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Eligibility criteria were: English language, human medicine field, international DOI and ISSN codes applied, free of charge, open access, PubMed/Scopus

Research integrity in Instructions for Authors in Japanese medical journals using ICMJE Recommendations: A descriptive literature study.

BACKGROUND: The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) has published Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals. These provide a global standard for writing and editing medical articles, including research integrity. However, no study has examined the research integrity-related content of Japanese medical journals' Instructions for Authors. We therefore compared research integrity content in ICMJE member journals with those in the English- and Japanese-language journals of the Japanese Association of Medical Sc

Resistance and mutations of non-specificity in the field of anxiety-depressive disorders in Canadian medical journals, 1950-1990.

Pharmaceuticalisation is a complex phenomenon, co-constitutive of what scholars identify as a pharmaceutical regime, comprised of networks of actors, institutions and artefacts as well as cognitive structures that underlie the production, promotion and use of medications. The aim of this paper is to explore the linkages between different components of this pharmaceutical regime through the analysis of psychotropic drug advertising in Canadian medical journals between 1950 and 1990. Advertisements stand at the nexus of macro-level processes related to the development, regulation and marketing o

Can generative AI improve academic journal selection decisions? Assessing traditional and algorithmic approaches in medical research.

INTRODUCTION: Journal selection is a critical step in the scientific publishing process, influencing the visibility, impact, and credibility of the published work. This task has become increasingly complex due to the proliferation of journals, predatory practices, and the diversity of editorial criteria. This narrative review presented an overview of classical tools, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven platforms, and generative models (ChatGPT, Grok) used to recommend suitable journals for an unpublished manuscript. METHODS: Six tools were tested (Springer Journal Finder, Jane, Manuscript Mat

Disease mechanisms of monogenic congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract American Journal of Medical Genetics Part C.

Congenital Anomalies of the Kidney and Urinary Tract (CAKUT) is a developmental disorder of the kidney and/or genito-urinary tract that results in end stage kidney disease (ESKD) in up to 50% of children. Despite the congenital nature of the disease, CAKUT accounts for almost 10% of adult onset ESKD. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that CAKUT is a Mendelian disorder, including the observation of familial clustering of CAKUT. Pathogenesis in CAKUT is embryonic in origin, with disturbances of kidney and urinary tract development resulting in a heterogeneous range of disease phenotypes. Despit

Role of editorial and peer review processes in publication bias: analysis of drug trials submitted to eight medical journals.

BACKGROUND: Publication bias is generally ascribed to authors and sponsors failing to submit studies with negative results, but may also occur after submission. We evaluated whether submitted manuscripts on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with drugs are more likely to be accepted if they report positive results. METHODS: Manuscripts submitted from January 2010 through April 2012 to one general medical journal (BMJ) and seven specialty journals (Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Gut, Heart, Thorax, Diabetologia, and Journal of Hepatology) were included, if

AI, libraries, and literacy: revisiting the Journal of the Medical Library Association's policy on the use of generative artificial intelligence in submissions.

In the fall of 2023, the Journal of the Medical Library Association (JMLA) introduced its policy on generative artificial intelligence (AI) submissions, predicting that these tools would become embedded within the workflows of clinicians, educators, researchers, and students. Those predictions dramatically underestimated AI's impact. On the three-year anniversary of that editorial, we revisit the issue in light of AI's unprecedentedly rapid adoption across knowledge work. We examine the educational challenges AI poses, arguing that excessive cognitive offloading threatens the deep thinking on

Core open science practices in major medical journals: development of an automatized tool based on a Large Language Model.

BACKGROUND: Open science practices are increasingly promoted to improve the transparency and reproducibility of biomedical research, and their large-scale monitoring has been identified as a priority by initiatives such as the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science. Existing automated tools cover only narrow subsets of practices. We developed and validated an automated tool, based on locally run open-weights large language models (LLMs), to extract a core set of 13 open science practices from published medical research articles. METHODS: We built a validation database of 303 research articles

Evaluation of Data Sharing After Implementation of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors Data Sharing Statement Requirement.

IMPORTANCE: The benefits of responsible sharing of individual-participant data (IPD) from clinical studies are well recognized, but stakeholders often disagree on how to align those benefits with privacy risks, costs, and incentives for clinical trialists and sponsors. The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) required a data sharing statement (DSS) from submissions reporting clinical trials effective July 1, 2018. The required DSSs provide a window into current data sharing rates, practices, and norms among trialists and sponsors. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the implementatio

Publication Trends of Pediatric and Adult Randomized Controlled Trials in General Medical Journals, 2005-2018: A Citation Analysis.

Policy has been developed to promote the conduct of high-quality pediatric randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Whether these strategies have influenced publication trends in high-impact journals is unknown. We aim to evaluate characteristics, citation patterns, and publication trends of pediatric RCTs published in general medical journals (GMJs) compared with adult RCTs over a 13-year period. Studies were identified using Medline, and impact metrics were collected from Web of Science and Scopus. All RCTs published from 2005-2018 in 7 GMJs with the highest impact factors were identified for an
