[Kallmann's syndrome in a child--a case report].

The patient was a male child 6 years and 6 months old. He visited our hospital because of bilateral cryptorchism and true phimosis. Since he was found to have fairly small testis, micropenis, and anosmia, endocrinological examination was performed. The plasma levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) were at the lower limit of normal values. LH gave a low reaction to the LH-releasing hormone test, while the reaction of FSH was near the lower limit of normal values. In the human chorionic gonadotropin test, there was no rise in the plasma levels of testosterone.

Kallmann's syndrome and chemosensory evoked potentials.

Kallmann's syndrome is generally assessed by history and subjective tests of olfactory function. In this study three patients suffering from Kallmann's syndrome were investigated with more objective techniques, including the recording of chemosensory evoked potentials (CSEPs). After testing olfactory function by means of a simple odor identification test, anosmia was confirmed in only one patient, since the other two patients were able to distinguish between several odorants. However, investigations in which CSEPs were employed indicated that all three patients had complete loss of their olfac

When anorexia nervosa symptoms mask Kallmann syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Although anorexia nervosa might delay puberty, a structured assessment at its onset remains crucial in excluding congenital delayed puberty diseases. CASE PRESENTATION: During the follow-up of a 15-year-old girl suffering from anorexia nervosa, a change of treatment has led to a thorough medical history revealing the absence of the olfactory bulb. Kallmann syndrome diagnosis was made on a blood analysis and the patient was treated with a multidisciplinary approach. CONCLUSION: After the diagnosis, our patient was relieved as it has clarified some of her symptoms including anosmia

[Kallmann-de Morsier syndrome: about 3 cases].

Kallmann-de Morsier syndrome (KS) is a genetic disease of the olfactory system characterized by the association of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism also referred to as gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) deficiency and anosmia or hyposmia (with hypoplasia or aplasia of the olfactory bulbs). Apart from sporadic cases that occur most often, familial Kallmann's syndrome is being described with increasing frequency. Diagnosis is mainly made in adolescents with absence of spontaneous puberty associated with smell disorders with hypoplasia or even aplasia of the bulbs and/or of the olfactory lobes on

[Molecular genetics of Kallmann syndrome: an update].

Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorder that occurs in either an inherited or a sporadic manner. KS results from failed embryonic migration of GnRH-1 neurons from the nasal placode to the hypothalamus, due to the abnormal development of olfactory nerves and bulbs. Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism is related to GnRH deficiency, and anosmia is associated with the absence or hypoplasia of olfactory bulbs and tracts. KS patients can also present some non-reproductive or non-olfactory anomalies in addition to the above typical symptoms. For the high complexity of

[Kallmann syndrome--a form of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism].

HISTORY: Two men (aged 44 and 47 years) were admitted with the diagnosis of Kallmann's syndrome, but they had widely different symptoms. The first patient (A) suffered from significant secondary symptoms, i.e. weight gain and skeletal pain, which had caused him to seek medical assistance. The second patient (B) had been admitted because of symptoms of depression, caused by separation from his female partner. INVESTIGATION: Patient A showed major somatic symptoms characteristic of the syndrome: eunuchoidism (physique, boyish voice, gynecomastia, micropenis and absent secondary sex characterist

[Kallmann De Morsier syndrome: FGF-signaling insufficiency?].

Kallmann syndrome (KAL) associates hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia, i.e. a deficiency of the sense of smell. Anosmia is related to the absence or the hypoplasia of the olfactory bulbs. Hypogonadism is due to GnRH deficiency, and is likely to result from the failed embryonic migration of GnRH-synthesizing neurons. These cells normally migrate from the olfactory epithelium to the forebrain along the olfactory nerve pathway. Kallmann syndrome is genetically heterogeneous. The gene responsible for the X-chromosome linked form of the disease, KAL-1, has been identified in 1991. KAL1 encod

Kallmann syndrome: fibroblast growth factor signaling insufficiency?

Kallmann syndrome (KAL) is a developmental disease that combines hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia. Anosmia is related to the absence or hypoplasia of the olfactory bulbs. Hypogonadism is due to GnRH deficiency and is likely to result from the failed embryonic migration of GnRH-synthesizing neurons. These cells normally migrate from the olfactory epithelium to the forebrain along the olfactory nerve pathway. KAL is phenotypically and genetically heterogeneous. The gene responsible for the X-chromosome linked form of the disease (KAL1) has been identified in 1991. KAL1 encodes anosmin-1

Renal abnormalities in patients with Kallmann syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To report experience in patients with Kallmann syndrome (KS) in whom urography was used to establish the type and frequency of renal anomalies associated with the disorder. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Of 19 patients with KS, 15 had the X-linked recessive form of the disease, whereas the remaining four were sporadic. Each patient underwent intravenous pyelography (IVP) using a non-ionic, low osmolarity contrast medium. RESULTS: Of the 19 patients with KS, 10 had kidney abnormalities; four presented with unilateral renal agenesis and six had less severe forms of renal abnormality (renal m

Kallmann syndrome associated with complex chromosome rearrangement.

We report on a male with Kallmann syndrome (KS) and an apparently balanced complex chromosome rearrangement (CCR): 46,XY,t(3; 9)(9;12)(q13.2;q21.2p13;q15). This is the first known report of a CCR in the KS and the second reported case of a definitive autosomal chromosome abnormality with KS. Possible relationships between the cytogenetic abnormality and KS are discussed.

Familial Kallmann syndrome with unilateral renal aplasia.

On the basis of studies in two brothers and their double first cousin, the Kallmann syndrome (KS) is discussed as an X-linked syndrome of anosmic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. The anosmia is thought to represent agenesis or hypoplasia of the olfactory lobes, the mildest form of the alobar holoprosencephaly developmental field defect; this is supported by the finding of hypotelorism in two of the patients and their mother. The endocrine defect is thought to represent a hypothalamic abnormality of the luteinizing hormone releasing hormone; borderline normal intelligence may represent another pl

Breast adenocarcinoma complicating Kallmann's syndrome.

Carcinoma of the breast is relatively rare among men, accounting for less than 1% of all malignancies. An increased risk has been associated with benign breast diseases, such as gynecomastia, Klinefelter's syndrome, testicular disorders, exogenous estrogen use, radiation, or a family history of male or female breast cancer. To date, hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism has never been associated with male breast cancer. We report here the first case of breast cancer coexisting with Kallmann's syndrome in a 66-year-old man.

Kallmann's syndrome: clues to clinical diagnosis.

Hypogonadotropic patients may visit pediatricians, general practitioners, endocrinologists or urologists, presenting with microphallus, cryptochidism or pubertas tarda and delayed bone maturation. Congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism is characterized, apart from small testes, by the constellation of low serum levels of testosterone, LH and FSH. Kallman's syndrome is characterized by congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism with midline defects such as anosmia (a deficiency of the sense of smell). The first case report dates back to 1856, and genetic defects causing the syndrome have been r

[Therapeutic importance of the diagnosis of Kallmann syndrome].

Hyposmia with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism was diagnosed as Kallmann syndrome in a 24 years old dizygotic female twin. This syndrome indicates the importance of smell in the sexual development through the progenitor cells in the olfactory placode because luteinizing-hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) secreting cells of hypothalamus arise from these cells. In addition, substitution therapy may be successful in the treatment of the lack of secondary sex traits and primary amenorrhoea as the presented case demonstrated.

Kallmann syndrome and associated malformation of the uterus.

Kallmann syndrome is a rare combination of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism due to hypothalamic insufficiency and anosmia. In both patients treated at our institution for infertility, a malformation of the uterus was noted: one patient had a unicornuate uterus, the other a uterus with a fundal hypoplasia and tubes of approximately 9 cm. It is not clear if the malformation is in association with Kallmann syndrome or purely coincidental. Given the known association of other malformations with Kallmann syndrome, we suppose that probably an underlying genetic defect having to do with organogenesis is

X-linked recessive Kallmann syndrome: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Kallmann syndrome (KS), also known as hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH) or olfactory-gonadal dysplasia, is a genetic condition in which the primary symptom is a failure to begin puberty or a failure to fully complete it. It occurs in both males and females and has the additional symptoms of hypogonadism and almost invariably infertility. The condition has a low prevalence that is estimated to be 1 in 4000 for male HH cases overall and 1:50000 for KS. It is three to five times more common in males than females. Whether this is a true sex imbalance or a reflection of how difficult K

Renal agenesis in Kallmann syndrome: a network approach.

Kallmann syndrome (KS) is defined by the combination of isolated hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism (IHH) and anosmia, with renal agenesis occurring in 30% of KS cases with KAL1 gene mutations. Unlike other KS-related disorders, renal agenesis cannot be directly associated with mutations in the KAL1 gene. We hypothesized that protein interaction networks may suggest a link between genes currently known to be associated with KS on the one hand and those associated with renal agenesis on the other hand. We created a STRING protein interaction network from KS-related genes and renal-agenesis-associat
