Effect of community-initiated kangaroo mother care on breastfeeding performance in low birthweight infants: A randomized clinical trial.

This individually randomized trial was conducted to estimate the effect of promoting community-initiated kangaroo mother care (ciKMC) in low birthweight (LBW) infants on infant breastfeeding performance. It was designed as a substudy within a larger primary trial on ciKMC and infant survival. Five hundred fifty stable LBW mother-infant dyads (1500-2250 g) who provided consent, were consecutively enroled for breastfeeding performance assessment. The ciKMC intervention included promotion and support of continuous skin-to-skin contact and exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) through home visits during t

SKIN-TO-SKIN CONTACT IN NEONATAL CARE: CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE, IMPLEMENTATION CHALLENGES, AND LONG-TERM OUTCOMES IN GEORGIA.

Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is a crucial component of neonatal care, playing a vital role in early physiological stabilization, neurodevelopment, and the formation of maternal-infant bonding. A growing body of evidence indicates that deprivation of SSC, particularly during the immediate postnatal period, is associated with long-term adverse outcomes, including emotional dysregulation, behavioral difficulties, and impaired cognitive development. Importantly, the absence of early SSC has also been shown to negatively affect the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding, thereby limiting its we

Institutional neonatal care as a manifestation of modern biosocial cooperation.

We don't see institutional neonatal care as a cold triumph of modern technocracy, but as the peak of an ancient human evolutionary strategy - biosocial cooperation and alloparenting. We trace care for vulnerable newborns from the evolutionary roots and selfless altruism seen in higher primates, through the deconstruction of myths about ancient eugenics with modern paleopathological findings in Greece, all the way to today's neonatal intensive care units. Using the example of kangaroo care and the neurobiological response of medical staff to newborn crying, we show that modern high-tech medicin

Changes in cerebral blood flow parameters among preterm 30-34 week neonates who are initiated on kangaroo mother care - A prospective analytical observational study.

BACKGROUND: Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is recommended standard of care for preterm neonates. They are vulnerable for cerebral blood flow (CBF) fluctuations linked to intraventricular hemorrhage and periventricular leukomalacia, which have implications on neurodevelopment. This study was designed to document any change in CBF in middle cerebral artery (MCA) of stabilized preterm 30-34 weeks neonates who are initiated on KMC. METHODS: We designed a prospective analytical observational study in a tertiary care neonatal unit. We enrolled 30-34 weeks preterm neonates eligible for KMC after their s

Prevalence and factors associated with skin-to-skin contact (SSC) practice: findings from a population-based cross-sectional survey in 10 selected districts of Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) practice improves newborn survival and child development through preventing hypothermia in newborns, improving early initiation of breastfeeding practice, and strengthening mother-child bonding. Despite having numerous benefits, it is one of the least practiced interventions in low and middle-income countries (1 to 74%). In Bangladesh, the prevalence of SSC was 26% in 2014. In this study, we aimed to estimate the prevalence of SSC in the study districts and identify factors that facilitate or inhibit SSC practice so that context-specific recommendations c

NeoWarm: Kangaroo Mother Care with Continuous Temperature Tracking and Heating.

Premature births are highly prevalent; world-wide, one in every ten births is premature. A common complication of premature birth is the inability of the newborns to regulate their own body temperature (hypothermia). Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is an effective strategy to mitigate this problem but has challenges. Namely, KMC requires constant engagement from the caregiver in order to keep the baby warm and to monitor the baby's temperature every 4 hours. In this report we describe NeoWarm, a device designed to address these challenges via continuous integrated warming and automated temperature

Effect of early skin-to-skin contact after vaginal birth on neonatal stress and day-5 bilirubin levels: a randomized trial.

This study aimed to examine the effects of early skin-to-skin contact (SSC) on neonatal stress as the primary outcome and-together with early initiation of breastfeeding-on fifth-day total serum bilirubin (TSB) levels as a secondary outcome. Mother-newborn dyads were randomly assigned to the control (n = 30) or SSC group (n = 30). Neonatal stress was assessed immediately after birth, under a radiant warmer, and during intramuscular (IM) vitamin K injection using the Newborn Stress Scale (NSS); the SSC group was evaluated five minutes after SSC initiation. TSB levels were measured on the fifth

Effect of zero-separation in mother-newborn care unit on preterm infant's stress and growth.

Background and objectives Previous studies have focused on the effect of kangaroo mother care (KMC) on stress among stable infants. Evidence regarding continuous zero-separation care among sick preterm infants remains limited. We hypothesised that keeping sick preterm infants with mothers in mother-newborn care unit (MNCU) with zero-separation would result in less stress and better growth as compared to inmates of conventional neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Methods This cohort study enrolled preterm infants admitted to either MNCU or NICU. The assignment of infants in both the groups was

Mother-Newborn Care Unit (MNCU) Experience in India: A Paradigm Shift in Care of Small and Sick Newborns.

While a Cochrane review (2016) showed that kangaroo mother care (KMC) initiated after clinical stabilization reduces mortality by 40%, evidence of the effect of initiating KMC immediately after birth without waiting for babies to become stable was unavailable until recently. This research gap was addressed by a multicountry, randomized, controlled trial co-ordinated by WHO. This trial was conducted in five hospitals in Ghana, India, Malawi, Nigeria, and Tanzania. Implementation of this trial led to development of the "mother-newborn care unit (MNCU)." Mother-newborn care unit or mother-newborn

Strategies discussed at the XIIth international conference on Kangaroo mother care for implementation on a countrywide scale.

AIM: Building strategies for the country-level dissemination of Kangaroo mother care (KMC) to reduce the mortality rate in preterm and low birth weight babies and improve quality of life. KMC is an evidence-based healthcare method for these infants. However, KMC implementation at the global level remains low. METHODS: The international network in Kangaroo mother brought 172 KMC professionals from 33 countries together for a 2-day workshop held in conjunction with the XIIth International KMC Conference in Bogota, Colombia, in November 2018. Participants worked in clusters to formulate strategi

"Short-term effects of a single kangaroo mother care session on urinary allantoin and maternal-infant bonding in preterm neonates: a quasi-randomized controlled trial".

Preterm birth is a leading contributor to neonatal morbidity and mortality, often necessitating neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission. The resulting separation of mother-infant dyads may escalate physiological stress and impair early bonding. While Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is a well-established intervention, evidence regarding the immediate physiological and affective impact of an isolated, short-duration session remains sparse. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the short-term effects of a single one-hour KMC session on oxidative stress and maternal-infant bonding in preterm neonate

Implementation of early essential neonatal care for newborns delivered by cesarean section in Jiaxing: a single-center prospective randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: As an essential part of Early Essential Newborn Care, 90 minutes of mother-infant skin-to-skin contact is significant in improving maternal and infant outcomes. However, due to human resource constraints and the consideration of maternal and infant safety, it is difficult to achieve continuous uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact for at least 90 minutes during and after cesarean delivery. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of the continuous uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact for at least 90 minutes during and after cesarean section for exclusive breastfe

Prevalence and factors associated with mother and newborn skin-to-skin contact in Afghanistan.

BACKGROUND: Mother-newborn skin-to-skin contact (SSC) involves placing the naked infant on the mother's bare chest within the first hour of birth and is crucial for thermoregulation, bonding, breastfeeding initiation, and promoting neonatal health. This study examined the prevalence, and factors associated with SSC in Afghanistan. METHODS: Data from the Afghanistan Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) 2022-23 were used and analysed from ever-married women, aged 15-49 years, who delivered a live infant in the past 2 years. The outcome was SSC, placing the naked infant on the mother's bare
