We report the clinical and pathological features of nine distinctive, but relatively unknown, vascular tumors of infancy and childhood presenting as soft tissue masses often associated with locally aggressive disease, lymphangiomatosis and Kasabach-Merritt syndrome. The patients, four males and five females, were all in their first decade of life except for two (median, 2 years; range, 5 months to 19 years). These tumors involved deep soft tissues of the upper extremity (four cases), retroperitoneum (two cases), chest wall, scalp, and neck (one case each). Four patients also had Kasabach-Merri

Kasabach-Merritt Phenomenon (KMP) is a life-threatening consumptive coagulopathy that commonly occurs in infants and young children. It is a combination of an enlarging vascular lesion, thrombocytopenia, microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia, and hypofibrinogemia. The case of a nine-month-old child who presented with a tuft haemangioma leading to the clinical features of KMP is presented. The investigation which was performed and pharmacological treatment initiated at different stages of presentation and the characteristic response to treatment are also discussed.

Studies are presented on a 62-yr-old woman with extreme hepatomegaly due to a giant hemangioma with alterations in the clotting system indicating a consumption coagulopathy. There was a fall of hemoglobin, fibrinogen, antithrombin III, and platelet number after arteriography of the truncus celiacus. Furthermore, there was sustained bleeding in the patient's right thigh caused by puncture of the arteria femoralis. Continuous administration of iv heparin corrected the clotting disorder including a rise in platelets from 95,000/microliters to 148,000/microliters, permitting surgical removement of

RATIONALE: Hepatic angiosarcoma (HSA) has a poor prognosis. Our understanding of its clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis remains limited. In certain cases, vascular tumors such as HSA can induce bleeding complications due to thrombocytopenia, known as Kasabach-Merritt syndrome (KMS). When KMS symptoms occur in the lungs, its clinical manifestations closely resemble those of ARDS, leading to misdiagnosis and poor outcomes. Unfortunately, this condition is extremely rare and there is a lack of relevant case reports, which further adds to the difficulty of its diagnosis and tre

INTRODUCTION: Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon (KMP) is a life-threatening consumptive coagulopathy that occurs in association with vascular lesions. Although classically described in children with kaposiform hemangioendothelioma, its occurrence in adults with giant hepatic hemangiomas is exceedingly rare and carries a high mortality rate.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old female presented with acute right upper quadrant pain. Triple-phase CT revealed an 11 cm giant hepatic hemangioma involving segments VII and VIII with classical peripheral nodular enhancement. Laboratory investigations showed cri

We describe a case of giant cavernous haemangioma of the liver with disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (Kasabach-Merritt syndrome) which was cured by orthotopic liver transplant. A 47 year old man presented with bleeding and tender massive hepatomegaly after tooth extraction. Investigations showed disseminated intravascular coagulopathy and a giant hepatic haemangioma involving both lobes of the liver. Initial treatment failed to resolve the coagulopathy and liver resection was attempted. At laparotomy the tumour was unresectable and the only option for cure was to offer a liver transplan

A 25-year-old woman presented with a progressively enlarging abdominal mass and severe coagulopathy (fibrinogen 0.6 g/L). Imaging revealed a giant, predominantly calcified hepatic lesion lacking typical nodular enhancement, raising suspicion for hamartoma or cystadenoma. Despite aggressive fibrinogen replacement, coagulopathy persisted. Multidisciplinary team discussion confirmed Kasabach-Merritt syndrome secondary to giant hepatic haemangioma. Anatomical left lateral sectionectomy was performed successfully. Histopathology confirmed cavernous haemangioma with thrombosis, infarction, and calci

BACKGROUND Liver hemangiomas are the most common benign liver tumor. Giant hepatic hemangiomas are hemangiomas that are greater than 4 cm in diameter. While asymptomatic giant hepatic hemangioma patients can be monitored without intervention, patients that experience complications can be managed by trans-arterial embolization, radiofrequency ablation, surgical resection, or enucleation. Although there is no consensus on definite medical treatment or optimal timing of surgery, liver transplantation is rarely indicated. Among giant hepatic hemangioma patients who received liver transplantation,

Langerhans cell histiocytosis is a rare haematological disorder with variable clinical findings and a high mortality rate. On the other hand, Kasabach-Merritt syndrome is of rare onset at adult age, requiring the simultaneous presentation of vascular lesion, thrombocytopenia, and consumptive coagulopathy. We present the first reported case of both diseases in a single patient and highlight the difficulties of diagnostic. A 69-year-old woman with immune thrombocytopenic purpura underwent surgery for the removal of giant skin haemangiomas. During post-operative care, intravascular disseminated c

Infantile hemangioendothelioma (IHE) is a rare benign vascular tumor with potentially life-threatening complications. Various therapeutic options have been recommended according to the site, extent, and behavior of the IHE. Because of the slow and unpredictable response to treatment with using a single drug in critically ill patients, there is a tendency to administer drugs in combination to treat this disease. Here, we report on a 1-month-old female infant who had a retroperitoneal IHE with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome and she was successfully treated with a combination of steroid, interferon-al

Kasabach-Merritt syndrome (KMS) is a consumptive coagulopathy caused by platelet trapping due to the distinctive endothelial structure of vascular tumours. Cardiac angiosarcoma complicated by KMS is exceedingly rare. We report the case of cardiac angiosarcoma in which diffuse alveolar haemorrhage was caused by both pulmonary metastases and KMS. Invasive mechanical ventilation with high positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) temporarily achieved transfusion-independent haemostasis. However, a biopsy could not be performed during this window, and the patient experienced a fatal outcome. In case

BACKGROUND: Primary hepatic angiosarcoma (PHA) is an extremely rare malignant tumor originating from vascular endothelial cells, accounting for only 0.1-2% of primary liver malignancies. Kasabach-Merritt syndrome (KMS) is a rare complication characterized by thrombocytopenia, coagulation dysfunction, and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, seldom reported in adult patients with hepatic angiosarcoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 74-year-old female with a history of vinyl chloride exposure who presented with acute right upper quadrant pain, shock, and multiple ecchymoses, scattered petechiae

BACKGROUND: Kasabach-Merritt syndrome (KMS) is a rear but dangerous type of hemangioma, which seriously threatens the life safety of KMS patients. The aim of this study is to explore the therapeutic and side effects of local administration of urea combined with methylprednisolone for the treatment of KMS in the maxillofacial region of infants.
CASE PRESENTATION: A total of 14 cases of KMS in infants' maxillofacial region were treated with local injection of 40% urea solution and methylprednisone after the external carotid artery ligation. After 10-36 months of follow-up, 13 out of 14 cases we

Kasabach-Merritt syndrome (KMS) is a coagulopathy characterized by thrombocytopenia and hypofibrinogenemia associated with large vascular tumors. KMS can lead to disseminated intravascular coagulation which, if not treated promptly, can be life-threatening. There are few reported cases of this syndrome and its evolution in pregnant women.

Clinical studies have provided ample evidence that high (either systemic or local) levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are associated with several pathophysiological disorders, including hemangiomas. To investigate whether elevated VEGF expression could directly affect these disorders, we created a transgenic (Tg) rabbit model with increased hepatic expression of the human VEGF(165) transgene under the control of the human alpha-antitrypsin promoter. Tg rabbits exhibited marked hepatomegaly, with livers 2.5-fold heavier than those of control rabbits. Histological analysis revea

Heparin is used as an anticoagulant in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), but in conditions where heparin is contraindicated, an alternative anticoagulant is required. Kasabach-Merritt syndrome is characterized by thrombocytopenia and consumption coagulopathy associated with kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) and tufted angioma (TA). There is no consensus regarding intraoperative anticoagulation in patients with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome undergoing CABG. A man in his 70s with angina pectoris and lesions in the left main trunk (LMT) was scheduled for CAGB. He was diagnosed with Kasabach

BACKGROUND: Angiosarcoma is a rapidly proliferating vascular tumor that originates in endothelial cells of vessels. Rarely, it can be associated with consumptive coagulopathy due to disseminated intravascular coagulation eventually leading to thrombocytopenia and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia. This specific manifestation is termed Kasabach-Merritt syndrome. Patients usually present with manifestations related to the primary diagnosis of angiosarcoma depending on the organ it is involving. However, if Kasabach-Merritt syndrome has occurred, it will present with manifestations such as bleedi

Diffuse hemangiomatosis of the liver and spleen is rare. Currently, few studies are available on diffuse hepatic and splenic hemangiomatosis accompanied by Kasabach-Merritt syndrome (KMS). The conserved telomere maintenance component 1 (CTC1) gene contributes to telomere maintenance and replication by forming the telomeric capping complex. Herein, we report a case of diffuse hemangiomatosis in the liver and spleen accompanied by KMS in a 59-year-old woman who carried two novel heterozygous CTC1 variants: c.435+9A>C and c.3074C>T (p.Ala1025Val). Using next-generation sequencing, we detected mut

Previous studies regarding sites of platelet destruction in patients with the Kasabach-Merritt syndrome are conflicting. The authors recently studied an adult patient with multiple large hemangiomata, thrombocytopenia, and intravascular coagulation by external imaging following the injection of autologous Indium-111 labeled platelets. Sequential images showed prompt accumulation of platelet-associated radioactivity in areas within the right hemithorax which corresponded to certain tumors noted on the chest roentgenogram. Despite the presence of multiple other lesions in bone and soft tissues,
