Oocysts of the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii are found in felid feces and can be washed into coastal waters, where they persist for months, attaching to algae and accumulating in invertebrates. We used wild bivalves to assess contamination of coastal waters of the Kerguelen and Galapagos archipelagos by this zoonotic parasite. Additionally, we leveraged the contrasting situations of these archipelagos to identify some potential drivers of contamination. In the Galapagos, with a cat density reaching 142 per km2, 15.38% of the sampled oysters (Saccostrea palmula) tested positive for T. gondii by q

Two distinct nuclear androgen receptors (ARs) were identified in brain and ovarian tissues of kelp bass, Paralabrax clathratus, termed kbAR1 and kbAR2, which correspond to the two nuclear ARs we have previously characterized in Atlantic croaker, Micropogonias undulatus, termed acAR1 and acAR2. Scatchard analysis of nuclear fractions of whole brain tissue demonstrated that kbAR1 had a single class of high-affinity binding sites for testosterone (T; K(d) of 1. 8 nM and B(max) of 1.0 pmol/g tissue), whereas cytosolic fractions of kbAR2 ovarian tissue had a single class of high-affinity binding si

Toxoplasma gondii is a land-derived parasite that infects humans and marine mammals. Infections are a significant cause of mortality for endangered southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis), but the transmission mechanism is poorly understood. Otter exposure to T. gondii has been linked to the consumption of marine turban snails in kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) forests. It is unknown how turban snails acquire oocysts, as snails scrape food particles attached to surfaces, whereas T. gondii oocysts enter kelp beds as suspended particles via runoff. We hypothesized that waterborne T. gondii oocys

Kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum) is rich in iodine and often fed by organic dairy producers as a mineral supplement to support animal health. A commonly held belief is that kelp supplementation decreases susceptibility to infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis due to increased iodine concentrations in tears. Whereas serum and milk iodine concentrations are positively correlated and modulated by oral iodine supplementation, nothing is known about the iodine concentration of tears. Therefore, the 3 objectives of this pilot study were to determine (1) the iodine content of tears, milk, and serum of cow

Understanding the role of species interactions (e.g. competition and facilitation) in structuring communities is a fundamental goal of ecology. It is well established that large canopy-forming seaweeds (e.g. kelps and fucoids) exert a strong influence on community structure, by offering biogenic habitat, altering environmental conditions and interacting with other species. While many studies have manipulated the density of seaweeds to causatively examine their effects on the local environment and associated communities, they are biased towards certain regions and canopy-forming species. We con

Macroalgae, the dominant primary producers of Earth's most productive coastal vegetated ecosystems and a vital component driving ocean carbon sequestration, produce ∼5 to 80% of their net primary productivity as dissolved organic carbon (DOC). However, the global extent, fate, and contribution of this macroalgae-derived DOC to the pelagic carbon pool remain poorly understood. We establish a molecular fingerprint of the dominant coastal macroalga Saccharina japonica-derived DOC (kelp-derived DOC) using ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry and conservative filtering. We differentiate the kelp-

The increasing human population and associated urban waste pose a significant threat to wildlife. Our study focused on the Kelp gull (Larus dominicanus), known for opportunistic feeding in anthropogenic areas, particularly urban landfills. We assessed the physiological status of Kelp gulls at a landfill and compared it with gulls from a protected natural site. Results indicate that gulls from the anthropogenic site exhibited lower levels of key physiological parameters linked to diet, including triglycerides, total proteins, uric acid, plasmatic enzyme activity, body condition index, and leuko

The landmark-based morphometric and meristic analysis of the kelp grouper (Epinephelus bruneus), red spotted grouper (E. akaara) and seven-banded grouper (E. septemfasciatus) were performed to compare the differentiation of overall body shape and structure. The measurements of the morphometric dimensions were observed in 25 parts (truss dimension: 16 parts; head part dimension: 9 parts) of 38 morphometric dimensions and also meristic differences observed in 3 parts (dorsal fin, anal fin and caudal fin) of 6 meristic counts (P < 0.05). Observed morphometric characteristics primarily involved in

During austral summers 1999-2000 and 2000-01, two outbreaks of avian cholera occurred in the Hope Bay area (63 degrees 24'S, 56 degrees 59'W), located on the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. Eighty-six dead birds were found: five kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus), 36 skuas (Stercorarius sp.), and 45 Adelie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae). The carcasses were studied using clinical, pathological, and microbiological criteria. Water samples from ponds where birds were settled and samples from 90 healthy birds also were analyzed during the second outbreak. Pasteurella multocida isolates were identified

BACKGROUND: Rates of estrogen-dependent cancers are among the highest in Western countries and lower in the East. These variations may be attributable to differences in dietary exposures such as higher seaweed consumption among Asian populations. The edible brown kelp, Fucus vesiculosus (bladderwrack), as well as other brown kelp species, lower plasma cholesterol levels. Since cholesterol is a precursor to sex hormone biosynthesis, kelp consumption may alter circulating sex hormone levels and menstrual cycling patterns. In particular, dietary kelp may be beneficial to women with or at high ris

We conducted an animal experiment to determine how dietary seaweeds rich in iodine and dietary fibers suppress radioactive iodine uptake by the thyroid, using mice and four kinds of experimental diets, three with 1% or 2% powdered fronds of the kelp Laminaria religiosa and 2% powdered laver Porphyra yezoensis, and one with cellulose. Iodine content of a hot-water extract of the kelp was 0.530 +/- 0.001%, and its dietary fiber (DF) values were 52.8 +/- 1.2%. Iodine in an extract of the laver was 0.008 +/- 0.001%, and its DF values were 41.4% +/- 0.7%. A statistically significant reduction of 12

Kelp, brown macroalgae in the order Laminariales, provide ecosystem services vital to ocean biodiversity. However, kelp forests worldwide are declining due to abiotic stressors such as ocean warming. In this study, we present results from high-resolution confocal microscopy and in vivo imaging system imaging using protocols developed to visualize kelp gametophyte cells exposed to heat-stress treatments. Imaging revealed chloroplast mislocalization, fragmentation, and subsequent loss of chloroplasts in heat-stressed gametophyte cells. Additionally, nuclei exhibited fragmentation and a progressi

Kelp species function as important foundation organisms in coastal marine ecosystems where they provide biogenic habitat and ameliorate environmental conditions, often facilitating the development of diverse understorey assemblages. The structure of kelp forests is influenced by a variety of environmental factors, changes in which can result in profound shifts in ecological structure and functioning. Intense storm-induced wave action in particular, can severely impact kelp forest ecosystems. Given that storms are anticipated to increase in frequency and intensity in response to anthropogenic c

Many heterotroph species perish when faced with severe food limitation; others can persist, adapt, and thrive. Sea urchins are emblematic of this paradox: they can overgraze kelp forests to form barren habitats, but can then survive for decades in these nutritionally depauperate seascapes. Understanding the mechanisms enabling persistence under starvation and rapid recovery when food returns provides insights into how consumer resilience shapes ecosystem dynamics. We quantified how food abundance, quality, deprivation, and reintroduction influence bioenergetic performance in the red sea urchin

Particulate (POC) and dissolved (DOC) organic carbon released during macroalgae cultivation has been shown to lead to carbon burial and export to the open ocean and deep sea. The recalcitrant portion of the DOC (RDOC) is a critical contributor to carbon sequestration and a major knowledge gap. We investigate the production and bioavailability of DOC released from Saccharina latissima, a primary cultivar in Europe, with a focus on RDOC quantification. DOC release rates were 0.5-1.4 mg C g(dw)-1 h-1 within 24 h, and concentrations stabilized after 187 days of biodegradation, at 37-79% (mean 58%)

BACKGROUND: Understanding ecological relationships among species and their pathogens is essential for assessing disease dynamics and associated risks to human, animal, and environmental health. Some haematophagous ceratopogonid species feed on birds and may act as vectors for haemoparasites, viruses, and bacteria. However, no reports have documented these insects feeding within the internal organs of birds.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to describe the first recorded occurrence of ceratopogonids feeding within the respiratory system of debilitated kelp gulls and cormorants.
METHODS: As part of

We report the case of a middle aged woman who was previously diagnosed with hypertension. She had been drinking a kelp concentrate solution daily for her hypertension instead of taking the prescribed medicine due to her personal beliefs about the kelp solution. As a consequence, she experienced vasospastic angina complicated by myocardial infarction and cardiogenic syncope resulting from iatrogenic thyrotoxicosis. Complementary medicine is widely used by the general population. However, there is still a lack of evidence regarding their efficacy and safety. This case shows that inadequate use o

Antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) are environmental pollutants and anthropization indicators. We evaluated human interference in the marine ecosystem through the ocurrence and quantification (real-time PCRs) of 21 plasmid-mediated ARGs in enema samples of 25 wild seabirds, upon admission into rehabilitation: kelp gull (Larus dominicanus, n = 14) and Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus, n = 11). Overall, higher resistance values were observed in kelp gulls (non-migratory coastal synanthropic) in comparison with Magellanic penguins (migratory pelagic non-synanthropic). There were sig

The spatial organization of microbiomes illuminates their structure, function, and relationship to their host. Using fluorescence spectral imaging to discriminate up to 16 fluorophores and using combinations of probes to generate unique spectral signatures, combinatorial labeling and spectral imaging-fluorescence in situ hybridization (CLASI-FISH) has been deployed to analyze spatial organization in oral, gut, and marine microbiomes. In dental plaque, imaging revealed the structural role of Corynebacterium matruchotii in organizing the plaque biofilm and revealed previously unrecognized comple

High pressure processing (HPP), ultrasound probe (USP) and ultrasound bath (USB) were applied to Alaria esculenta as a fermentation pre-treatment. Seaweed was then fermented by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (LAB) or symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY). Physiochemical properties of fermented seaweed were measured. pH was significantly different (p < 0.05) across SCOBY-fermented samples with different pre-treatments but not LAB-fermented samples (p > 0.05). There was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in total viable count (TVC) with the highest count in HPP-treated samples, and low
