[Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) after epidemic keratoconjunctivitis].

BACKGROUND: Persistent and recurrent nummuli after epidemic keratokonjunktivitis (EKC) often lead to reduced visual acuity and increased glare. In spite of long-term topical steroid therapy nummuli often recur. We tried to treat persistent nummuli with phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK). PATIENTS: PTK with an excimer laser (193 nm) was performed in 13 eyes of 9 patients with nummuli. The nummuli were observed over 3-72 months (mean: 36 months). Preoperatively, the visual acuity was 0.1-0.9 (mean: 0.39 +/- 0.22) and the brightness acuity test (BAT) was 0.05-0.5 (mean: 0.25 +/- 0.15). Prior to

[Complications in excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy].

The complications of photorefractive keratectomy with excimer laser for myopia depend on preoperative myopia and inter-individual variability in wound healing. Loss of best corrected visual acuity is induced by Haze, irregular astigmatism and decentration. Haze is more frequent after treatment of high myopia. Decentration is a severe complication because its treatment is not well defined and is difficult. Corneal ulcerations infectious and non-infectious have been reported. Other complications are described: induced astigmatism, over and under corrections, central islands, halos, loss of corne

Traumatic corneal abrasions following photorefractive keratectomy.

BACKGROUND: During excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy, central Bowman's layer and superficial stroma are removed. A potential disadvantage of this technique is whether proper epithelization of the cornea will occur in the event of a corneal abrasion. A potential advantage of photorefractive keratectomy over radial keratotomy in the event of blunt trauma is the presumably sound structural integrity of the cornea following superficial removal of stroma in photorefractive keratectomy compared to the weakened cornea following deep incisions in radial keratotomy. METHODS: We report two pati

Excimer laser keratectomy after radial keratotomy.

Radial keratotomy to treat myopia has been characterized by a lack of predictability. Until recently, patients with undercorrected myopia who were unsatisfied with their visual outcome could only be offered secondary augmentation procedures, which were equally unpredictable. We performed excimer laser keratectomy in six eyes of five patients whose myopia was undercorrected after radial keratotomy. The average residual spherical equivalent refractive error after radial keratotomy was -2.40 diopters, and this was reduced to -0.48 diopters after laser treatment. Final uncorrected visual acuity ra

[Excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy for myopia].

We have used excimer laser during the past year to correct refractive errors (myopia and hypermetropia) and to remove superficial corneal scars. 714 eyes underwent excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy for correction of myopia and 81% of the patients achieved uncorrected visual acuity of 6/12 or better without glasses. 17 patients underwent a second treatment to correct residual myopia and all of them had uncorrected visual acuity of 6/12 or better 6 months later. The results show that excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy is a safe and efficient procedure to correct myopia. The possib

Efficacy of Photorefractive Keratectomy vs. Topography-Guided Photorefractive Keratectomy for Refractive Errors and Aberrations Post-Penetrating Keratoplasty.

Background: Managing post-keratoplasty astigmatism remains challenging. Even though graft viability is the main concern in keratoplasty, astigmatism might hinder vision recovery following a successful corneal transplant. Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and topography-guided PRK may be options for correcting refractive errors in patients who underwent keratoplasty. The aim of the study was to compare the results of PRK and topography-guided PRK in patients who had undergone corneal keratoplasty. Methods: This study was conducted at the Chair and Ophthalmology Clinic of the Medical University

Photorefractive keratectomy in eyes with atypical topography.

Laser correction of refractive errors is one of the most effective surgical procedures today. Even so, the selection of patients who will have the outcomes they expect remains a major challenge. Corneal ectasia, a frustrating problem that can occur naturally with diseases such as keratoconus, has also been reported after refractive surgery. This review addresses the issues surrounding the use of surface refractive surgery in patients who may have atypical topography, which is a risk factor for ectasia. At present, available tests for predicting future corneal stability can give false positives

[Chinese expert consensus on phototherapeutic keratectomy (2026)].

Diseases of the corneal epithelium, Bowman's membrane, and anterior stroma can cause recurrent eye pain, photophobia, tearing or vision loss. Among various treatment methods, phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) has been increasingly widely used in clinical practice due to its advantages of simplicity, precision, safety, and low risk of postoperative irregular astigmatism. In China, however, the lack of consensus regarding the scope of corneal diseases eligible for PTK and the clinicians' insufficient understanding of this treatment pose challenges to clinical work. To provide guidance for the r
