A curious genetic coincidence found in a study of palmoplantar keratoderma.

In a study of hereditary palmoplantar keratoderma of the Unna Thost variety in the northernmost county of Sweden (Norrbotten) a genetic coincident between this inherited disorder and the autosomal dominant form of ichthyosis vulgaris was found. In the same family a patient with ichthyosis vulgaris combined with palmoplantar hyperkeratosis and hyperkeratotic plaques on the knees and the elbows appeared.

Palmoplantar keratoderma with mottled pigmentation: A clue to chronic arsenicosis.

Arsenical keratosis is a precancerous skin condition resulting from chronic exposure to arsenic, typically through ingestion of contaminated water, food (notably rice), certain medications, or tobacco products. Exposure can also occur via industrial and environmental sources, including some herbal remedies. According to the World Health Organization, a minimum of six months of exposure above safe limits is required to develop toxicity, with cutaneous manifestations appearing anywhere from 4 to 40 years later. Clinically, it presents as thick, painful, keratotic lesions on the palms and soles,

A Case of Palmoplantar Keratodermas Complicated by Pseudoainhum and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is an autoimmune disorder leading to lymphocytic cicatricial alopecia. Different agents such as hydroxychloroquine, methotrexate, cyclosporine, and mycophenolate mofetil have been tried to control hair loss with limited efficacy. JAK inhibitors are immune-modulating drugs which interfere with the JAK-STAT signaling pathway in lymphocytes and are used in treatment of inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and alopecia areata. SUMMARY: Our aim was to determine effectiveness of JAK inhibitors in LPP and its clinical variant, frontal fibrosing a

Keratoelastoidosis Marginalis of the Hands: A Distinct Form of Palmoplantar Keratoderma.

Keratoelastoidosis marginalis of the hands (KEMH) is an acquired form of marginal papular keratoderma, characterized by thickened keratotic plaques predominantly affecting the lateral side of the index finger and the medial side of the thumb. It is often associated with chronic sun exposure and trauma, usually affecting older individuals. Due to clinical similarities with other palmoplantar keratodermas, differential diagnosis is essential for effective treatment management. Although clinical information is often sufficient for differentiation, a skin biopsy can provide valuable diagnostic clu

The Proteolytic Network in Palmoplantar Keratoderma: SERPINA12 Joins the Family.

Mohamad et al. (2020) describe loss-of-function mutations in SERPINA12 as a cause of diffuse, transgradient palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK). This disorder shares similar clinical features with other PPKs caused by protease overactivity, including erythema, peeling, and exacerbation on water exposure. Understanding this disorder may shed further light on the role of proteases and their inhibitors in epidermal physiology.

Is palmoplantar keratoderma of Greither's type a separate nosologic entity?

17 patients with palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK) were detected among 48 investigated members of the clan O. 5 of these 17 patients had a well-expressed hyperkeratosis on their knees. In one family hyperkeratosis of the knees was inherited as a dominant feature, but in two other families it was not. The observation was made that the expressivity of the disease was fading: while there were 15 PPK patients among the 25 investigated members in the generations II and III, there were only 2 patients among 22 members in the generations IV and V. In addition to PPK incontinentia pigmenti was diagnosed

Mycosis fungoides: an important differential diagnosis for acquired palmoplantar keratoderma.

Mycosis fungoides is the most common subtype of primary cutaneous lymphoma and has several clinical variants. We report a 74-year-old man presenting with an acquired palmoplantar keratoderma initially diagnosed and treated as psoriasis with suboptimal improvement. Several months later the patient developed patches and plaques that were histologically consistent with mycosis fungoides. These lesions were ameliorated with the treatment of the underlying mycosis fungoides and the palmoplantar keratoderma resolved promptly with radiotherapy. This case highlights the importance of considering mycos

Keratosis follicularis (Darier-White disease), with an unusual palmoplantar keratoderma.

A 38-year-old woman presented with widespread, hyperkeratotic papules and plaques that had been present since childhood. Her mother, brother, and son have similar lesions. A diagnosis of keratosis follicularis was made, which has been treated with isotretinoin. Palmoplantar lesions of keratosis follicularis have been described as discrete, punctate keratoses, hyperkeratotic papules, small pits, or keratin-filled depressions. This patient has an unusual palmoplantar keratoderma in association with keratosis follicularis. The lesions are elevated, discrete, filiform, hyperkeratotic spires, which

[Brauer-Buschke-Fischer keratoderma palmo-plantare punctata. Brauer's keratoderma dissipatum hereditarium palmoplantare].

Keratosis punctata palmaris et plantaris (KPPP) of Buschke-Fischer-Brauer is an autosomal dominant genodermatosis characterized by disseminated cup-shaped horny papules with central depression containing keratotic plugs. The disease is circumscribed on the palms and soles; associated abnormalities are unusual. The microscopic findings show normal structure of the epidermis with massive orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis, hypergranulosis and acanthosis; dermis is slightly compressed below the epidermis level by the keratotic plugs and free of inflammatory infiltrates. We describe a female of 37 year

Biallelic mutations in LSS in autosomal-recessive mutilating palmoplantar keratoderma.

Mutilating palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK) is a heterogeneous genetic disease that poses enormous challenges to clinical diagnosis and genetic counselling. Lanosterol synthase (LSS) gene encodes LSS involved in the biosynthesis pathway of cholesterol. Biallelic mutations in LSS were found to be related to diseases such as cataracts, hypotrichosis and palmoplantar keratoderma-congenital alopecia syndrome. The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of the LSS mutation to mutilating PPK in a Chinese patient. The clinical and molecular characteristics of the patient were evaluated. A

Analysis of the KRT9 gene in a Mexican family with epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma.

Epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma (EPPK), an autosomal-dominant genodermatosis, is the most frequently occurring hereditary palmoplantar keratoderma. EPPK is characterized by hyperkeratosis of the palms and soles. Approximately 90% of patients present with mutations in the KRT9 gene, which encodes for keratin 9. Many of these mutations are located within the highly conserved coil 1A region of the alpha-helical rod domain of keratin 9, an important domain for keratin heterodimerization. The objective was to assess the clinical and molecular characteristics of a Mexican family with EPPK. Th
