Primary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Kidney Associated with Multiple Staghorn Calculi: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the kidney is an extremely rare malignancy, usually originating from the renal pelvis due to continuous irritation from infections and nephrolithiasis. However, it can also arise from parenchyma. It has rarely been reported in the literature. Renal squamous cell carcinoma often presents late with nonspecific symptoms such as flank pain and hematuria. It is typically linked to kidney stones, and because of its nonspecific clinical symptoms and radiological characteristics, patients often seek medical attention only in the advanced stages of t

Surgical management of spontaneously ruptured kidney with peritonitis due to neglected renal and ureteric calculi.

A 30-year-old woman presented with right-sided abdominal pain associated with fever. Her ultrasound showed right renal calculus with no hydronephrosis along with collection in peritoneal cavity and pouch of Douglas. CT showed ruptured right kidney with multiple renal and ureteric calculi as well as displaced renal calculi in perinephric space and pararenal space. Exploratory laparotomy and right nephroureterectomy were done. Nephrolithiasis with secondary infection makes the kidney fragile due to pathological changes, which may cause rupture of the renal calyces with trivial trauma or may be s

Gist of medicinal plants of Pakistan having ethnobotanical evidences to crush renal calculi (kidney stones).

Human civilization is facing the problem of kidney stones since ancient ages. Although mortality rate is not so high, yet it affects the victim's quality of life. The patient suffers from intense pain and many other symptoms modifying his life style and affecting his socioeconomic status. Many drugs and invasive methods have also been developed for the treatment, but these are highly costly and unaffordable for poor people and the rate of reoccurrence is also high. The use of medicinal plants is both affordable and effective in this respect. In this article, 35 medicinal plants of Pakistan ori

[Practical experiences with antegrade local chemolysis of struvite/apatite, uric acid and cystine calculi in the kidney].

In 18 patients (20 kidneys) with struvite/apatite-, uric acid- and cystine stones antegrade local chemolysis was performed via percutaneous or operative nephrostomy. Complete stone dissolution was achieved in 11 kidneys, while in six kidneys partial dissolution of stones was performed. In these six cases added instrumental manipulations shortened the time of therapy. In three cases chemolysis was unsuccessful. Average irrigation time was 21 days per renal unit. Only minor complications like dysuria and skin rashes were seen. Due to long time of irrigation we recommend chemolitholysis mainly as

[Disintegration of kidney calculi by piezoelectrically generated high-energy sound waves. Physical principles and experimental studies].

The recently developed equipment for extracorporeal piezoelectric lithotripsy (EPL) represents an improvement concerning the shock-wave-induced disintegration of urinary calculi. While the usual spark gap transmitter needs a focusing reflector, the piezoelectric lithotriptor is based on a self-focusing spherical bowl transmitter. The stone is detected exclusively by ultrasound. For this purpose, an integrated sector scanner is used as well as the high-energy sound transmitter itself. With the piezoelectrically generated high-energy sound pulses we have succeeded in completely disintegrating im

Role of flexible uretero-renoscopy in management of renal calculi in anomalous kidneys: single-center experience.

INTRODUCTION: Flexible uretero-renoscopy (FURS) is an accepted modality for management of renal calculi in orthotopically placed kidney. Though it has been used in management of calculi in anomalous kidneys, the literature is scarce. AIM AND OBJECTIVE: To define the role of FURS in the management of stones in anomalous kidneys. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of all the patients with anomalous kidneys who primarily underwent FURS from January 2010 to December 2015 at our institute. In our study, we included patients with anomalies of lie, fusion and rotation. A t

Renal replacement lipomatosis of a single moiety in a horseshoe kidney without calculi or infection: A rare CT diagnosis.

Renal sinus lipomatosis is a benign proliferation of fatty tissue within the renal sinus, typically preserving the renal parenchyma, and is usually detected incidentally. Renal replacement lipomatosis (RRL) represents the advanced end of the spectrum of renal sinus lipomatosis. It is characterized by extensive fatty proliferation associated with marked renal parenchymal atrophy. Horseshoe kidney is the most common renal fusion anomaly; however, its association with unilateral RRL is rarely reported. We report a case of a 28-year-old male who presented with right flank pain and was found to hav
