[ECMO support in a child with cardiogenic shock due to Kingella Kingae endocarditis].

INTRODUCTION: Endocarditis is a rare disease in children, especially in those without previous heart disease, and Kingella Kingae (KK) is rarely identified as the cause. Extracorporeal membrane oxyge nation (ECMO) is a support for both heart and respiratory failure. OBJECTIVE: To report the first case of infectious endocarditis (IE) due to KK which required ECMO support secondary to refractory cardiogenic shock. CLINICAL CASE: 19-months-old previously healthy female patient, with a 2-day his tory of fever, and diagnosed with hand-foot-and-mouth disease. The patient developed refractory cardi

Subtle bacterial endocarditis due to Kingella kingae in an infant: a case report.

A 9-month-old infant presented with fever, dyspnoea, and a murmur. Echocardiography showed a mitral vegetation with significant regurgitation. Mitral valve plasty was performed on day 6, and was polymerase chain reaction positive for Kingella kingae. The cardiac outcome was favourable. This case illustrates a subtle presentation of K. kingae mitral valve infective endocarditis in a normal-cardaic infant, treated with early surgery, and the agent belonged to the HACEK (Haemophilus spp Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Capnocytophaga spp, Cardiobacterium hominis, Eikenella corrodens, and Kin

A pitfall in purulent arthritis brought out in Kingella kingae infection of the knee.

A description of the protracted course of kingella monoarthritis is given as an illustration of the importance of accounting for the slow growth, low viable numbers, and fastidious culture requirements of microbes that may be encountered in synovial samples. The practice of carrying out synovial fluid cultures in the same way as blood cultures is recommended.

Person-to-person transmission of Kingella kingae among day care center attendees.

Fifty Kingella kingae organisms, isolated from tonsillar cultures of day care center attendees during an 11-month period, and 60 isolates derived from epidemiologically unrelated individuals, including 19 isolates from respiratory carriers and 41 isolates from patients with invasive infections, were typed by immunoblotting, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, and ribotyping. One strain, defined by unique immunoblotting, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, and ribotyping patterns, represented 14 day care isolates (28%) and was frequently isolated during the first half of the follow-up period; a sec

A Cerebrovascular Accident in the Setting of Kingella kingae Infective Endocarditis: A Case Report.

Kingella kingae, a rare member of the Haemophilus, Aggregatibacter, Cardiobacterium, Eikenella, and Kingella (HACEK) group, is an uncommon cause of infective endocarditis (IE) in adults. Advances in molecular diagnostics, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), have significantly improved its identification. We present the case of a 78-year-old immunocompromised woman who developed watershed territory cerebral infarctions in the setting of K. kingae endocarditis. The patient initially presented w

First report of Kingella kingae infection in a paediatric population in Accra, Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: Kingella kingae is recognized as a frequent source of childhood bacteremia and the commonest agent of skeletal system infections in children 6 months - 4 years old. Several factors, including difficulty in detecting this fastidious organism in routine laboratory assays, result in underdiagnosis of the infections. Species-specific nucleic acid amplification assays, however, significantly improve the detection of K. kingae in blood samples. The aim of this study was to detect K. kingae infection in young children in Accra, Ghana. METHODS: a cross-sectional based study was carried

Kingella kingae Osteoarticular Infections Approached through the Prism of the Pediatric Orthopedist.

Nowadays, Kingella kingae (K. kingae) is considered as the main bacterial cause of osteoarticular infections (OAI) in children aged less than 48 months. Next to classical acute hematogenous osteomyelitis and septic arthritis, invasive K. kingae infections can also give rise to atypical osteoarticular infections, such as cellulitis, pyomyositis, bursitis, or tendon sheath infections. Clinically, K. kingae OAI are usually characterized by a mild clinical presentation and by a modest biologic inflammatory response to infection. Most of the time, children with skeletal system infections due to K.

Imaging of Kingella kingae musculoskeletal infections in children: a series of 5 cases.

PURPOSE: Kingella kingae musculoskeletal infections continue to be under-diagnosed and there remains a paucity of literature on its imaging features. The purpose of this manuscript is to review the imaging, clinical, and laboratory findings of microbiology-proven K. kingae infections. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of musculoskeletal infections between January 1, 2013 and Dec 31, 2016 yielded 134 patients from whom 5 patients had confirmed K. kingae infections (3 boys and 2 girls, mean age of 16 months, range 9-38 months). High respiratory virus oropharyngeal carriage rate during Kingella kingae osteoarticular infections in children.

AIM: Kingella kingae osteoarticular (KKO) infections are frequently associated with upper respiratory tract infections. However, no comparative studies detecting respiratory viruses had ever been performed between KKO and non-KKO (NKO). PATIENTS & METHODS: Eighteen viruses were searched by FilmArray(®) Respiratory Panel (BioFire Diagnostics, UT, USA) in the oropharynx of 6-to-48-month-children admitted for KKO and NKO in 2013. RESULTS: At least one virus was detected in the oropharynx of 19/21 (90.5%) KKO and 3/8 (37.5%) NKO cases (p = 0.008). In KKO group, human rhinovirus was predominant (

Molecular Tests That Target the RTX Locus Do Not Distinguish between Kingella kingae and the Recently Described Kingella negevensis Species.

Kingella kingae is an important invasive pathogen in early childhood. The organism elaborates an RTX toxin presumably restricted to this species. Consequently, real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays targeting the RTX locus have been developed in recent years and are gaining increasing use for the molecular diagnosis of K. kingae infections. However, the present study shows that Kingella negevensis, a Kingella species newly identified in young children, harbors an identical Kingella RTX locus, raising the question of whether K. negevensis can be misidentified as K. kingae by clinical microbio

Fastidious or rarely isolated gram-negative rods with a particular focus on Kingella kingae.

SUMMARYThe bacterial species covered in this review are taxonomically diverse. Kingella kingae, a well-known infectious agent of pediatric bacteremia and osteomyelitis as well as septic arthritis in children aged 6-36 months, is the focus of this review. Recent advances in molecular diagnostic tools have allowed new aspects of pathogenesis and transmission to be investigated since the last review of K. kingae in this journal. Asymptomatic oropharyngeal colonization with noninvasive strains can be distinguished from invasive clones, so that a positive detection in the oropharynx can be assumed

Kingella kingae in Pediatric Bone and Joint Infections: The Diagnostic Value of Oropharyngeal Testing.

Oropharyngeal Kingella kingae DNA was identified in 16 of 16 children with proven K. kingae bone and joint infection (BJI) (sensitivity 100%; 95% confidence interval: 79-100) and in 33 of 112 with disproven K. kingae BJI (specificity 71%; 95% confidence interval: 61-79). Due to low specificity, we advocate against oropharyngeal K. kingae DNA testing as a diagnostic tool in children suspected of BJI.

First documented outbreak of arthritis caused by Kingella kingae in a Spanish childcare center.

BACKGROUND: Recently, Kingella kingae (K. kingae) has been described as the most common agent of skeletal system infections in children 6 months-2 years of age. More exceptional is the clinical presentation in clusters of invasive K. kingae infections. We describe the investigation of the first outbreak of 3 cases of arthritis caused by K. kingae documented in Spain detected in a daycare center in Roses, Girona. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In December of 2015 surveillance throat swabs obtained from all attendees from the same class of the index daycare center were assessed to study the prevalence o

Osteoarticular Infections of the Chest Wall Due to Kingella Kingae: A Series of 8 Cases.

Osteoarticular infections of the chest wall are relatively uncommon in pediatric patients and affect primarily infants and toddlers. Clinical presentation is often vague and nonspecific. Laboratory findings may be unremarkable in osteoarticular chest wall infections and not suggestive of an osteoarticular infection. Causative microbes are frequently identified if specific nucleic acid amplification assays are carried out. In the young pediatric population, there is evidence that Kingella kingae is 1 of the main the main causative pathogens of osteoarticular infections of the chest wall.
