This paper examines the cholera epidemics in Japan and liberated Korea south of 38th degree of latitude; epidemics which appeared to spread from repatriation ships in the spring of 1946. In particular, the paper focuses on how the General Headquarters/Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (GHQ/SCAP) and Japanese society perceived and handled the situation in which many cholera patients and carriers of cholera bacilli were found among Korean illegal entrants to Japan. At that time, cholera was prevalent in various parts of Asia, which was a disaster facilitated by the repatriation of several

175 Years of Progress in PTSD Therapeutics: Learning From the Past.

Traumatic stressors have always been a part of the human experience. What is now referred to as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was first studied in the context of military trauma during the Civil War and World War I but most extensively in World War II. Much of what we know about the medical and psychological management of PTSD has its origins in military psychiatric approaches, and a review of these practices reveals important tenets that should be applied in current treatment for both military and nonmilitary PTSD. These practices include intervention as soon as possible after the trau

Later life disability status following incarceration as a prisoner of war.

OBJECTIVE: Incarceration-related predictors of later life disability in former prisoners of war (POWs) have not been previously described. The objective of this project was to identify aspects of POW incarceration which are associated with later life disability status. METHODS: Cross-sectional retrospective study of 328 former U.S. military personnel held as POWs (World War II and Korean and Vietnam Wars) who presented for evaluations at a Veterans Affairs medical center between January 1, 1997 and December 31, 2004 outcome measures were: (1) total number of later life disability conditions a

Respiratory Health Among U.S. Veterans Across Age and Over Time.

Many veterans and their advocates are concerned that military service may cause impaired respiratory function resulting from occupational exposures to environmental hazards (e.g., Agent Orange in the Vietnam War, burn pits in the Global War on Terror) or infectious diseases (e.g., pneumonia). Such exposures occurring in service members' young adulthoods may not have immediately discernible effects on lung health; some symptoms may emerge in the immediate months or years after separation from the military, and diagnosable conditions may not manifest until decades later. Health care providers se

The measure and mismeasure of the tibia: implications for stature estimation.

Trotter and Gleser's stature estimation formulae, based on skeletons of the Terry collection and on WWII casualties, have been widely used in forensic work. Our work with the Terry and WWII data yielded tibia lengths too short compared to other data sets. Using Trotter's original measurements, we discovered that she consistently mismeasured the tibia. Contrary to standard practice and her own definitions, she omitted the malleolus from the measurement. Trotter's measurements of the tibia are 10 to 12 mm shorter than they should have been, resulting in stature estimations averaging 2.5 to 3.0 c

Review article: History of venous trauma.

ABSTRACT: This is a literature review on the history of venous trauma since the 1800s, especially that to the common femoral, femoral and popliteal veins, with focus on the early 1900s, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and then civilian and military reviews (1960-2020). In the latter two groups, tables were used to summarize the following: incidence of venous repair versus ligation, management of popliteal venous injuries, patency of venous repairs when assessed <30 days from operation, patency of venous repairs when assessed >30 days from operation, clinical assessment (ede

MMPI profiles of veterans of WWII and Korea: comparisons of former POWs and combat survivors.

MMPI profile patterns were compared between combat veteran groups of 168 POW survivors and 67 servicemen who were not war captives in WWII and the Korean Conflict. Results confirm previous reports that the scales, Hypochondriasis (Hs), Depression (D), and Hysteria (Hy), are characteristically elevated among former POWs. Findings also point to the contribution of scales, Psychasthenia (Pt), Paranoia (Pa), and Ego Strength (Es), in differentiating groups, suggesting that negative ruminations, heightened anxiety, interpersonal anger and suspiciousness, and low self-esteem contribute significantly

Postservice mortality among Vietnam veterans. The Centers for Disease Control Vietnam Experience Study.

The postservice mortality (through December 1983) of a cohort of 9324 US Army veterans who served in Vietnam was compared with that of 8989 Vietnam-era Army veterans who served in Korea, Germany, or the United States. Over the entire follow-up period, total mortality in Vietnam veterans was 17% higher than for other veterans. The excess mortality occurred mainly in the first five years after discharge from active duty (rate ratio, 1.45; 95% confidence interval, 1.08 to 1.96) and involved motor vehicle accidents, suicide, homicide, and accidental poisonings. Thereafter, mortality among Vietnam

Clonorchiasis in Korea.

Since the first report on the incidence of egg positiveness of Clonorchis sinensis by Matsumoto in 1915, clonorchiasis has been recognized as one of the most important endemic diseases in Korea. Most of the works on clonorchiasis after then had been studied by Japanese workers until 1945. After the Korean War in 1950-1953, health problems of Koreans were extremely aggravated. This gave us attentions for the prevention of contagious diseases as well as parasitic infections in public health point of view. It was greatly recognized that not only ascariasis, hookworm infections, and trichuriasis,

The relationship between battle intensity and disease rates among Marine Corps infantry units.

Disease and non-battle injury (DNBI) rates were examined in conjunction with casualty rates across two Marine Corps operational scenarios, the assault on Okinawa and the Korean War. DNBI rates increased significantly with battle intensity among Marine infantry battalions involved in both operations. Highly significant positive correlations (p < 0.001) were evidenced between DNBI rate and wounded-in-action (WIA) rate, DNBI rate and killed-in-action rate, and DNBI rate and the preceding week's WIA rate among infantry units in both Okinawa and Korea. The severity of wounds and DNBI rate were also

Anesthesia and World War II: When the Battlefield Becomes a Research Field-A Bibliometric Analysis of the Influence of World War II on the Development of Anesthesiology.

At the outbreak of World War II (WWII), anesthesiology was struggling to establish itself as a medical specialty. The battlefield abruptly exposed this young specialty to the formidable challenge of mass casualties, with an urgent need to provide proper fluid resuscitation, airway management, mechanical ventilation, and analgesia to thousands. But while Europe was suffering under the Nazi boot, anesthesia was preparing to rise to the challenge posed by the impending war. While war brings death and destruction, it also opens the way to medical advances. The aim of this study is to measure the e

US Malaria Casualties and Chemoprophylaxis during the Vietnam War.

Malaria caused mass casualties among US military personnel during the Vietnam War, resulting in as many hospitalizations as combat wounds in 1965. Its military impact was magnified because nearly all the disease-related casualties came from front-line units, particularly the infantry, with rates exceeding 10 per 1,000 man-days of exposure. The imperfect chemoprophylaxis using chloroquine-primaquine tablets developed during the Korean War proved inadequate. Adding daily dapsone was more effective but resulted in rare cases of agranulocytosis and at least eight deaths. After Vietnam, malaria in

Estimated blood storage requirements for a North Korean invasion of South Korea and South Korea's preparedness.

PURPOSE: Hemorrhage is the leading cause of preventable battlefield deaths, and up to 30% of casualties could survive with timely transfusions. In a potential North Korea-South Korea conflict, ensuring adequate blood supply would be crucial for military medical readiness. This study estimated the 2-week blood demand in such a conflict and evaluated South Korea's preparedness to meet it. METHODS: A multifaceted approach was employed, incorporating historical casualty data, medical literature on battlefield transfusions, South Korean blood supply reports, and military blood logistics models. [A history of malaria in modern Korea 1876-1945].

Although it is not certain when malaria began to appear in Korea, malaria is believed to have been an endemic disease from ancient times. It was Dr. H. N. Allen (1858-1932) who made the first description and diagnosis of malaria in terms of Western medicine. In his first year report (1885) of Korean Government Hospital he mentioned malaria as the most prevalent disease. Very effective anti-malarial drug quinine was imported and it made great contribution in treating malaria. After Japan had annexed Korea in 1910, policies for public health system were fundamentally revised. Japan assumed contr

Assessment of long-term psychosocial sequelae among POW survivors of the Korean Conflict.

Psychological and psychiatric assessments were performed among 20 prisoner-of-war (POW) Korean-Conflict survivors. Results revealed extraordinary biological and psychological abuse with weight losses exceeding 35% of preservice weights and long-term cognitive, emotional, and behavioral sequelae. The full range of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms was seen in 90% to 100% of the cases with high prevalence of co-morbidity, specifically mood (75%), other anxiety (45%), and alcohol abuse (20%) disorders. Documented by clinical investigators at POW release and now more than 30 years later, symp

America's neglected veterans: 1.7 million who served have no health coverage.

Many U.S. military veterans lack health insurance and are ineligible for care in Veterans Administration health care facilities. Using two recently released national government surveys--the 2004 Current Population Survey and the 2002 National Health Interview Survey--the authors examined how many veterans are uninsured (lacking health insurance coverage and not receiving care from the VA) and whether uninsured veterans have problems in access to care. In 2003, 1.69 million military veterans neither had health insurance nor received ongoing care at Veterans Health Administration (VHA) hospitals

Health Care for Certain Children of Vietnam Veterans and Certain Korea Veterans--Covered Birth Defects and Spina Bifida. Final rule.

This rule adopts as final a proposed rule of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to amend its regulations concerning the provision of health care to birth children of Vietnam veterans and veterans of covered service in Korea diagnosed with spina bifida, except for spina bifida occulta, and certain other birth defects. In the proposed rule published on May 15, 2015, VA proposed changes to more clearly define the types of health care VA provides, including day health care and health-related services, which we defined as homemaker or home health aide services that provide assistance with Acti

A Review of the History, Current Use, and Future of Insecticide Treated Uniforms Among Militaries in the Indo-Pacific.

The Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) encompasses a large area with many endemic vector-borne diseases that are a persistent threat to military personnel. During previous wars, casualty rates from vector-borne diseases have often surpassed combat casualties. One of the most effective countermeasures developed to reduce the risk of vector-borne diseases has been the use of insecticide treated uniforms. This review explores the history, current practices, and future innovations required for using treated uniforms in this region. Uniform treatments began during World War II when the United States

Hantavirus Infections among Military Forces.

INTRODUCTION: Hantaviruses cause two kinds of clinical syndromes. Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome is caused by Hantaan virus in Asia, Puumala virus (PUUV) and Dobrava virus in Europe, and Seoul virus worldwide. Hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome is caused by Sin Nombre virus in North America and Andes virus and related viruses in Latin America. All hantaviruses are carried by rodents and insectivores. Humans are infected via inhaled aerosols of rodent excreta. In the history, there are several epidemics of acute infectious diseases during many wars, which have been suggested or proven t
