BACKGROUND: Experience of just under 5 years has shown that balloon kyphoplasty can be just as successfully employed as the longer-stablished vertebroplasty for the treatment of back pain due to recent or prior osteoporotic fractures as well as new traumatic fractures.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Among 345 patients with a total of 690 treated vertebral bodies, the change in pain symptomatology was analyzed for a follow-up period of 12 months in 40 study patients who underwent kyphoplasty and a control group of 20 patients. In addition, the pain experienced by a further 29 patients with new traumatic

Cement reinforcement for the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral fractures is efficient mean with high success in pain release and prevention of further sintering of the reinforced vertebrae; however, the technique does not allow to address the kyphotic deformity. Kyphoplasty was designed to address the kyphotic deformity and help to realign the spine. It involves the percutaneous placement of an inflatable bone tamp into a vertebral body. Restoration of VB height and kyphosis correction is achieved by inflation of the bone tamp with liquid. After deflation, a cavity is created that eases the

As many as 70% of patients with cancer and multiple myeloma initially present with osteolytic involvement of the spine. These vertebral fractures are associated with significant morbidity and mortality and represent a tremendous personal and societal burden. Traditional medical and surgical options often are inadequate or too invasive for this population debilitated by cancer. Vertebroplasty involves the injection of polymethylmethaerylate to strengthen a vertebra. This minimally invasive method, which has been adopted by practitioners during the past decade to treat symptomatic osteoporotic c

BACKGROUND: Spinal subdural hematoma (SDH) is a very rare complication of percutaneous balloon kyphoplasty. Here, a 66-year-old male developed delayed-onset spinal SDH following kyphoplasty.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 66-year-old male with a history of atrial fibrillation on Eliquis developed a SDH on day 4 following a T3 single-level kyphoplasty for an osteoporotic compression fracture. The patient presented with progressive lower extremity motor/sensory paralysis that eventually ascended to the cervical region. The magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a large dorsal subdural hematoma extending

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical efficacy and radiological outcomes of the novel percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) "Trinity" anchoring technique versus conventional PKP for Kummell disease.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 92 patients (January 2019-January 2024) assigned to the PKP "Trinity" (n = 45) or conventional PKP (n = 47) groups. The "Trinity" technique used a bilateral, O-arm-guided approach to construct a continuous cement anchoring complex across the vertebral body, pedicle, and articular process. Perioperative metrics, clinical outcomes, and complications were compared.

BACKGROUND: Kyphoplasty has been proven to be an efficient method to relieve patient suffering from osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs). Because of its technological superiority, unilateral kyphoplasty consumes less operative time and bone cement than traditional bilateral kyphoplasty. However, there is controversy about which method is most efficient in the treatment of OVCFs. Thus, an overall analysis should be performed to shed light on the facts corroborating both procedures.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of unipedicular kyphoplasty versus bipedicular kyp

OBJECTIVE: Currently, there are no clinical studies comparing different cement augmentation methods, and no clinical observational studies of a unipedicular approach. DESIGN, PATIENTS, INTERVENTIONS, MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: The present study compared three commercially available vertebral augmentation systems: balloon kyphoplasty, vertebroplasty and shield kyphoplasty. The primary objective was to assess change in subjective severity of backache on a visual analog scale (VAS) and subjective improvement in quality of life on the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), at a mean 6 months post-surger

We report the usefulness of revision balloon kyphoplasty (re-BKP) and vertebra-pediculoplasty using cannulated screws (VPCS) for osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVF) following cement dislodgement of conventional BKP. Between 2015 and 2020, three patients with OVF developed symptomatic cement dislodgement following BKP and underwent re-BKP. All three patients showed a loose cemented mass and spinal instability. Balloon inflation was performed in the gap between the loosened cemented mass and the remaining cortical bone rim, and this extended gap was filled with cement. To prevent re-dislodgem

UNLABELLED: Zooarchaeological age-at-death profiles for domesticated ruminants can be inferred from tooth eruption, replacement, and wear. These profiles contain important information on slaughter management and have been used informally to infer the goals of past husbandry strategies. In principle, sex-specific survival curves could inform on various productivity parameters, including herd growth rates and sustainability, milk and meat yields, macronutrient and calorie yields, and feed consumed. Knowledge of these parameter values would allow identification of differences in husbandry economi

Symptomatic osteoporotic compression fractures are commonly addressed through vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty. However, cement leakage poses a significant risk of neurological damage. We introduced "aspiration percutaneous kyphoplasty", also known as "decompressed kyphoplasty", as a method to mitigate cement leakage and conducted a comparative analysis with high viscosity cement vertebroplasty. We conducted a retrospective study that included 136 patients with single-level osteoporotic compression fractures. Among them, 70 patients underwent high viscosity cement vertebroplasty, while 66 patien

The diagnosis of Kümmell's disease mainly depends on clinical and radiologic findings. However, these are not the gold standards for diagnosing this disease; bone biopsy is required. The authors performed modified bone biopsy and cement-filling techniques during kyphoplasty and investigated the feasibility and efficacy of kyphoplasty for the treatment of Kümmell's disease. This study included 28 patients (9 men and 19 women; average age, 71.9 years) with Kümmell's disease. All patients underwent the modified biopsy procedure and kyphoplasty with the modified cement-filling technique. Treatment

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The surgical treatment of osteoporotic vertebral body fractures is associated with many complications. Vertebroplasty (VP) and kyphoplasty (KP) are minimally invasive procedures allowing us to strengthen the vertebral body and thus stabilize it. The aim of this non-randomized study is to evaluate a group of patients treated by VP and KP procedures and to discuss related risks. MATERIAL Between September 2005 and October 2007, a total of 32 patients (37 vertebrae) were treated by the VP and KP techniques. Vertebroplasty was used in 21 and kyphoplasty in 11 patients. In this

PURPOSE: To compare efficacy of balloon kyphoplasty in restoring vertebral height and correcting kyphosis in patients having vertebra plana with or without osteonecrosis.
METHODS: 12 women and 3 men (mean age, 76 years), who had a complete vertebra plana with or without osteonecrosis (n=8 vs n=7), underwent balloon kyphoplasty. No external manoeuvres were performed before or during balloon kyphoplasty, except for positioning the patients in a prone posture on the operating table. The anterior, middle, and posterior vertebral height and the kyphotic angle were measured pre- and post-operativel

Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are associated with a recurrent fracture rate of 2.4% to 23%, which is lower than the general natural history of untreated osteoporotic fractures. Some authors suggest the risk of refracture at adjacent vertebra will be reduced by prophylactic stabilization. We therefore compared the refracture rate after prophylactic balloon kyphoplasty in 60 patients randomized into groups with either monosegmental balloon kyphoplasty or adjacent prophylactic balloon kyphoplasty. The level (superior versus inferior) for prophylactic stabilization was chosen according to fractur

Patients experience more than 700,000 osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures each year in the United States, primarily because of bone brittleness and the inability of the vertebrae to resist increased forces applied to them. Patients diagnosed with this type of fracture are given the option of conservative or operative treatment approaches. Although a typical compression fracture generally heals in 6 to 12 weeks, patients may be offered the kyphoplasty procedure, which reduces the fracture and stabilizes it with cement. Although this procedure is not without risk, it is deemed a safe an

INTRODUCTION: Metastatic spine fractures are very frequent, often occurring in patients with severe medical conditions. Open kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are part of the classic management of this of fracture. In certain conditions such as spinal cord compression caused by epidural metastatic cancer or collapse of the vertebral body implying a local kyphosis, surgery should allow decompression of the spinal cord and stabilisation of the spine in a simple act. The purpose of this study is to assess a surgical technique combining surgical decompression by laminectomy frequently associated with
