Uncommon localization of a sialolith in a child's frenum.

Sialoliths or salivary calculi appear as hard nodules of unknown etiology and are usually located in the anterior portion of Wharton's duct (submandibular gland ducts), affecting mainly adult men. The purpose of this report was to describe an uncommon case of submandibular sialolith located in a child's lingual frenum and address the semiologic and semiotechnical aspects related to the case's diagnosis.

Longitudinal evaluation of diastema closure in patients submitted to labial frenectomy in different phases of the mixed dentition: A historical cohort.

BACKGROUND: There is a controversy in the literature concerning the indications for frenectomy to treat interincisal diastema. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the spontaneous closure of the interincisal diastema in patients submitted to upper labial frenectomy (ULF) during the mixed dentition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Records from patients treated between 2009 and 2014 in the course of Pediatric Dentistry Surgery at Fundecto-USP were evaluated to select those that were submitted to ULF during the mixed dentition using the Chelotti technique. Initial clinic characteris

A case of incontinentia pigmenti associated with multiorgan abnormalities.

Incontinentia pigmenti is a systemic disorder affecting the skin, teeth, eyes, nervous tissue, hair, nails, musculoskeletal system, and heart. We describe an 11-month-old girl with incontinentia pigmenti associated with a ventricular septal defect, left hemiatrophy, hemangiomas, an abnormal labial frenum, and spastic cerebral palsy manifested as left hemiplegia and developmental delay. We believe this patient illustrates that incontinentia pigmenti is a systemic disorder necessitating a multidisciplinary approach to management.

Inverted mesiodens--a case report.

A nine and a half years old female school child was examined in a during routine dental examination. The patient had swelling over maxillary midline area just near the labial frenum. Both the central incisors were in position. Radiographic examination revealed presence of an inverted supernumerary tooth between the roots of the central incisors. Surgical extraction of the supernumerary was planned. A unique case of inverted (upside down) mesiodens is presented.

Frenectomy Managed by a Bilateral Pedicle Flap: A Case Report.

In the oral cavity, the frenum is an anatomical structure composed of mucosal folds that connect the lip and cheek to the alveolar mucosa, gingiva, and underlying periosteum. An abnormally positioned maxillary labial frenum can contribute to the formation of a diastema and gingival recession. Various techniques have been proposed for the correction of aberrant frenal attachments, including frenectomy and frenal repositioning procedures. This case report presents an approach, combining frenectomy with a double lateral pedicle flap. The procedure involves closure across the midline by utilizing

New Surgical Approach for Mandibular Anterior Root Coverage by Modified Tunnel Technique With Simultaneous Frenuloplasty: Technical Description and 5-Year Recall Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Root coverage of gingival recessions in the anterior mandible has limited predictability. Mandibular incisors often offers a thin phenotype, a lack of keratinized tissue and moreover a shallow vestibule with high labial frenum attachment. These conditions induce tensions on the surgical site in conventional coronally advanced flap (CAF) procedures and may compromise the complete root coverage. The purpose of this case report is to present a novel surgical technique for deep labial recessions on mandibular incisors, based on a modified tunnel technique with subepithelial connectiv

A Comparative Study of The Results of Conventional Surgery and Diode Laser in Maxillary Labial Frenectomy: A Randomized Clinical Trial : Conventional Surgery versus Diode Laser in Maxillary Labial Frenectomy.

BACKGROUND: The frenum, a flexible tissue structure connecting the lips, tongue, and cheeks to the gingiva, can exhibit abnormalities leading to dental complications such as diastema and restricted movement. This study investigates the efficacy and safety of frenectomy by diode laser, compared to traditional surgical approaches. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This clinical trial, approved by the ethical committee and registered with the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (IRCT20231009059673N1), enrolled 26 patients requiring maxillary labial frenectomy due to papillary or penetrating frenum types wh

Defining ankyloglossia: a case series of anterior and posterior tongue ties.

INTRODUCTION: Ankyloglossia is a congenital condition in which tongue mobility is limited due to an abnormality of the lingual frenulum. The impact of ankyloglossia on breastfeeding is poorly understood but there is a recent trend toward more recognition of this condition and early intervention when needed. Currently, there lacks clear definition of ankyloglossia and different subtypes have been proposed with no clinical correlation. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of anterior versus posterior ankyloglossia in a large series of consecutive patients and to assess clinical outcomes after

Clinical evaluation of a patient with single maxillary central incisor.

Hypodontia in permanent dentition is the most common developmental anomaly and frequently found in the second premolar and maxillary lateral incisor In the primary dentition, however, hypodontia appears to be less frequent, with the exception of cases such as ectodermal dysplasia and cleft lip and palate. We report a child with one primary maxillary central incisor at midline. The presence of a single permanent maxillary central incisor was also confirmed by radiological examination. Other intraoral abnormalities were detected including absence of upper labial frenulum and abnormal palatal str

Breastfeeding difficulties and oral cavity anomalies: The influence of posterior ankyloglossia and upper-lip ties.

OBJECTIVE: Oral cavity anomalies may contribute to breastfeeding problems. The objective of this study was to describe our experience in a high-volume breastfeeding difficulty clinic with a focus on posterior ankyloglossia and upper-lip ties. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients from a dedicated breastfeeding difficulty clinic from January 2014 to December 2014 was performed. Those identified to have ankyloglossia and/or upper-lip ties underwent release procedures. Subjective breastfeeding changes were documented afterwards. RESULTS: Of the 618 total patients, 290 (47%) had anterior a

[Absence of inferior labial or lingual frenula in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: a new diagnostic criterion?].

BACKGROUND: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome comprises a rare and heterogeneous group of diseases affecting the skin, joints and vessels. Diagnosis is based on clinical score since molecular testing is not routinely available. High sensitivity and specificity concerning the absence of inferior labial and lingual frenula has been reported in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, but the diagnostic value of this finding has been contested. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We here report the cases of 2 female patients, one with a vascular form of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome complicated by spontaneous dissection of the carotid and vert

The connective tissue graft with labial vestibular extension.

Because of its predictability and simplicity, the connective tissue graft has become the method of choice in most root coverage procedures. However, in cases with prominent frenum involvement and limited vestibular depth, this procedure can be difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish. Building upon a modification of the labial vestibular extension, described by Kazanjian in 1935, a technique is presented, whereby vestibular extension is accomplished in the same one-stage surgical procedure with a connective tissue graft. The learning objective of this article is to introduce this modificati

Angioedema as a complication in periodontal surgery: report of a case.

Angioedema is a diffuse swelling of the subcutaneous or submucosal tissues that occurs in both hereditary and non-hereditary forms. It can be a temporarily disfiguring condition, but not usually a serious one unless the airway is compromised. In the majority of cases, no underlying cause can be identified. In this report, a case of "idiopathic" angioedema that occurred while performing a periodontal surgical procedure is presented. This case is interesting because the patient was on long-term use of an angiotensin-converting enzyme [ACE] inhibitor for hypertension, and recent evidence has show
