Blood banking services in critical access hospitals in Kansas: A laboratory perspective.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the resource capacity for blood banking in critical access hospitals (CAHs) in Kansas and the experiences of medical laboratory personnel working in them. METHODS: An electronic survey was implemented to record data from all 82 CAHs in Kansas between May and July 2023. The distance between hospitals with no blood bank services and commercial blood banks was calculated. RESULTS: Only 63.4% of Kansas CAHs located in nonmetropolitan counties reported access to 24/7 blood bank services. In 12.2% of laboratories with 5 or fewer workers, there were no staff proficient in

Clinical and laboratory characteristics of children under five hospitalized with diarrhea and bacteremia.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhea is one of the leading causes of mortality in children under five globally. When it is associated with bacteremia, mortality is even higher. However, bacteraemia in diarrheal children has gained little attention in spite of its deleterious impact in under-five mortality. So, we aimed to evaluate associated clinical and laboratory factors for death in under-five children hospitalized with both diarrhea and bacteremia. METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, we used patients' electronic database of Dhaka Hospital of 'icddr,b', and enrolled all under-five childr

How to optimize the prescription of laboratory tests? Success and failures in an academic hospital.

In the context of the flat-rate reimbursements in healthcare, we reviewed physicians' behavior towards laboratory test ordering. We demonstrated how it could be improved when a specific stage of the patient management is considered. We took a multi-step approach to analyze the laboratory test orders in the context of planned laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a general teaching hospital. A reference order set was defined through a collaborative analysis between clinicians and laboratory physicians. The clinical and financial impacts were then evaluated over a period of 24 months. After the introd

Clinical and laboratory profiles of hospitalized children with acute respiratory virus infection.

PURPOSE: Despite the availability of molecular methods, identification of the causative virus in children with acute respiratory infections (ARIs) has proven difficult as the same viruses are often detected in asymptomatic children. METHODS: Multiplex reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assays were performed to detect 15 common respiratory viruses in children under 15 years of age who were hospitalized with ARI between January 2013 and December 2015. Viral epidemiology and clinical profiles of single virus infections were evaluated. RESULTS: Of 3,505 patients, viruses were identi

An unusual infection outbreak in rats held in a human hospital research laboratory.

Most animal hazards in laboratories are widely recognized. These, together with zoonoses and other possible insults, are subject to the establishment of guidelines for the operation and maintenance of such facilities. Most of the infectious diseases described among laboratory animals are related to the inadequate implementation of preventive and quality control policies. These included surgical, respiratory and intestinal tract infections, and typically spread between animals. This report is about an outbreak of nosocomial bacterial infection in rats held in the research laboratory of a human

Revolutionizing clinical microbiology laboratory organization in hospitals with in situ point-of-care.

BACKGROUND: Clinical microbiology may direct decisions regarding hospitalization, isolation and anti-infective therapy, but it is not effective at the time of early care. Point-of-care (POC) tests have been developed for this purpose. METHODS AND FINDINGS: One pilot POC-lab was located close to the core laboratory and emergency ward to test the proof of concept. A second POC-lab was located inside the emergency ward of a distant hospital without a microbiology laboratory. Twenty-three molecular and immuno-detection tests, which were technically undemanding, were progressively implemented, wit

Reports of clinical hepatitis A from Public Health and hospital microbiology laboratories to the PHLS Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre during the period 1980-1988.

Clinical hepatitis, diagnosed as being caused by virus type A by tests for specific immunoglobulin M, has been reported from laboratories in England, Wales and Ireland since 1980. There were 25541 reports in the following 9 years, a yearly average of 2838. A 7-year cycle is suggested by peaks in the numbers of reports of 4502 in 1982 and 4167 in 1988 with a continuing rise in 1989. Contact with other cases of acute hepatitis was recorded for 3899 patients (15%) of which 2497 (64%) were in families, 258 (7%) were in schools, 94 (2%) were in institutions/hospitals, 197 (5%) were in the neighbour
