Lancinating pain, as described in tabes dorsalis, was noted in four patients with chronic sciatica after several months of laminectomy. The pain responded well to carbamezapine therapy. Abnormal or ephaptic neural transmission of impulses in the roots was considered to be the cause of such pain.

BACKGROUND: This meta-analysis compared the clinical efficacy of lumbar spinous process-splitting laminectomy (LSPSL) and conventional laminectomy (CL) for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) for treating lumbar stenosis.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature review on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library, and CNKI until March 2024 to identify studies that compared LSPSL with CL for the treatment of LSS. This meta-analysis was carried out with the use of RevMan 5.3 software.
RESULTS: Eight studies comprising 801 patients (431 for LSPSL, 370 for CL) were included in this meta-analysis. Compar

OBJECTIVE: The US-based Spinal Laminectomy versus Instrumented Pedicle Screw (SLIP) trial reported improvement in disability following laminectomy with fusion versus laminectomy alone for patients with lumbar spondylolisthesis. Despite using similar methods, a concurrent Swedish trial investigating the same question did not reach the same conclusion. The authors performed a simulation-based analysis to elucidate potential causes of these divergent results.
METHODS: The mean and standard deviation of the preoperative and 2-year postoperative Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores for each stud

OBJECTIVE: Cervical spondylotic myelopathy is a common cause of neurological disability, especially in aging populations. There are several approaches to decompress the cervical spinal cord, including anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, corpectomy and fusion, arthroplasty, posterior cervical laminectomy with or without fusion, and laminoplasty. Less well described is minimally invasive cervical laminectomy. The authors report their technique and results for minimally invasive cervical laminectomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors describe in detail their surgical technique and results

PURPOSE: Reduced strength and stiffness of lumbar spinal motion segments following laminectomy may lead to instability. Factors that predict shear biomechanical properties of the lumbar spine were previously published. The purpose of the present study was to predict spinal torsion biomechanical properties with and without laminectomy from a total of 21 imaging parameters.
METHOD: Radiographs and MRI of ten human cadaveric lumbar spines (mean age 75.5, range 59-88 years) were obtained to quantify geometry and degeneration of the motion segments. Additionally, dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) sc

Spondylolisthesis is a hereditary anomaly of the spine, often associated with intractable pain in the back and lower extremities. The diagnosis is commonplace. Approximately 5% to 7% of the population in the United States has the anomaly. This percentage varies with country and race. In patients who seek medical aid for symptoms of low back pain, 10% will have a pars defect. Laminectomy of the entire separate neural arch and a posterior interbody fusion is a superior operation for spondylolisthesis. It is a difficult operation, requiring a high degree of technical skill, but when properly perf

A proportion of patients with lumbar disc syndromes have little in the way of disc protrusion, but have spinal canals, either congenitally narrow, or else narrowed by degenerative changes. These patients require myelography for their assessment and decompression by complete laminectomy for their treatment, as opposed to the more usual practice of discectomy via partial laminectomy and/or fusion. Five such cases with myelographic findings are presented.

OBJECT: The objective of this systematic review was to use evidence-based medicine to examine the efficacy of cervical laminectomy and fusion for the treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM).
METHODS: The National Library of Medicine and Cochrane Database were queried using MeSH headings and keywords relevant to cervical laminectomy, fusion, and CSM. Abstracts were reviewed, after which studies that met the inclusion criteria were selected. The guidelines group assembled an evidentiary table summarizing the quality of evidence (Class I-III). The reach of the lumbar vertebral column in the dog should be preferred in operations on the spinal marrow after own experiments. A better survey during the operation and a smaller risk of contusion of the spinal marrow by surgical instruments passed through there by reason a wider spinal canal a more voluminous spinal marrow. This method is more expensive, however more advantageous than a laminectomy in the reach of the thoracic spine because there exist some differences in the form of the bodies of the vertebra in humans and dogs.

A 16-year-old spayed female Siamese cat was presented with a history of paraparesis and obstipation. The cat's impaired function was attributed to malalignment of the L7-S1 spine (cauda equina syndrome) and to traumatic fracture of the left femoral neck, with severe degenerative arthritis. Laminectomy resolved the cauda equina problem, and the hip joint was not treated.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) impairs quality of life and is commonly treated with microscopic laminectomy. Some have suggested that biportal endoscopic laminectomy may offer advantages through smaller incisions and reduced tissue trauma. However, it remains unclear whether these theoretical advantages translate into meaningful differences in patient-reported outcomes that patients would actually perceive.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We performed an RCT in which we asked: (1) Does biportal endoscopic laminectomy result in equivalent functional outcomes as measured by the Oswestry Disabilit

Bilateral adrenal hemorrhage is a rare but life-threatening condition that can result in adrenal insufficiency. We present the case of a 63-year-old man who developed bilateral adrenal hemorrhage following a fall from 3 feet height on a ladder. He fell backwards, striking his lower back on the adjacent dry wall and landed on the ground. He was admitted for a traumatic L1 burst fracture and was treated with T11-L3 fusion and T12-L3 laminectomy. Postoperatively, he received prophylactic subcutaneous unfractionated heparin and later developed unexplained tachycardia, pulmonary embolism, and bilat

PURPOSE: Grinding trajectory planning for robot-assisted laminectomy is a complicated and cumbersome task. The purpose of this research is to automatically obtain the surgical target area from the CT image, and based on this, formulate a reasonable robotic grinding trajectory.
METHODS: We propose a deep neural network for laminae positioning, a trajectory generation strategy, and a grinding speed adjusting strategy. These algorithms can obtain surgical information from CT images and automatically complete grinding trajectory planning.
RESULTS: The proposed laminae positioning network can rea

A 56-year-old alcoholic male incurred L5 vertebral body and bilateral L4 pars fractures with progressive L4 on L5 anterolisthesis following low-energy falls while intoxicated. Recently, he had a L3-S1 laminectomy for lumbar spinal stenosis with claudication. Preoperative imaging and radiographs were negative for pars defects and instability, so an isolated decompressive surgery was performed. Following low-energy falls, his outpatient work-up revealed fractures through the bilateral L4 pedicles and posterior third of L5 vertebral body, with recurrence of axial back pain and bilateral lower ext

OBJECT: Patients who develop a lower-extremity neurological deficit after lumbar laminectomy present a diagnostic dilemma. In the setting of a neurological deficit, some surgeons use MRI to evaluate for symptomatic compression of the thecal sac. The authors conducted a prospective observational cohort study in patients undergoing open lumbar laminectomy for neurogenic claudication to document the MRI appearance of the postlaminectomy spine and to determine changes in thecal sac diameter caused by the accumulation of epidural fluid.
METHODS: Eligible patients who were candidates for open lumba

Our objectives were to study a/ the clinical results of microsurgical decompression without laminectomy compared to those reported from standard decompression laminectomy in patients with central lumbar spinal stenosis, and b/ if the microsurgical technique could prevent post-operative instability and concomitant symptoms. Twenty-one patients were treated, 11 men and 10 women, aged 47-81 years. Fourteen patients had "pure" stenosis whereas 7 had additional diseases that compounded the symptoms of stenosis. Independent examiners saw the patients pre-operatively and a mean of 27 months post-oper
