Are specific language impairment and dyslexia distinct disorders?

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether specific language impairment (SLI) and dyslexia are distinct developmental disorders. METHOD: Study 1 investigated the overlap between SLI identified in kindergarten and dyslexia identified in 2nd, 4th, or 8th grades in a representative sample of 527 children. Study 2 examined phonological processing in a subsample of participants, including 21 children with dyslexia only, 43 children with SLI only, 18 children with SLI and dyslexia, and 165 children with typical language/reading development. Measures of phonological awareness and no

Trying to Make Sense of Developmental Language Disorders.

In this article, I share my thoughts concerning what children with developmental language disorders should be called, how they should be defined, and how we might differentiate children with specific language impairment (SLI) from other children with developmental language disorders. Among other things, I attempt to show why a lack of congruence between clinical and research constructs should be expected. Researchers and clinicians use different identification criterion and procedures because clinical and educational objectives are different from research objectives. While recognizing these di

A new classification of developmental language disorders (DLD).

Eighty children with DLD were examined with 18 language tests, mainly derived from a neuropsychological investigation called NEPSY (NEuroPSYchological Investigation for Children). The children were 6-0 to 7-9 years old and attended kindergarten. The test profiles of the first 40 children, Group 1, were utilized for the elaboration of a classification of DLD. The test profiles were grouped into five subgroups with the aid of a Q-type factor analysis. Then the classification was modified to suit clinical application by collapsing two pairs of subgroups. The resulting categories were called: the

Associations Between Language, Speech Sound, and Learning Disorders.

Background and Objectives: Children with specific learning disorders (SLD) often present a history of speech and language deficits. However, systematic evidence on the co-occurrence among distinct learning and communication disorders remains limited. This study aimed to describe the associations among reading, spelling, and math disorders and their relationships with clinically diagnosed speech sound and language disorders and speech sound disorders in a large, well-characterized clinical sample. Methods: 235 3rd- to 8th-grade Italian children with SLD participated in the study. They were cate

[Behavioral disorders in children with specific language impairment].

OBJECTIVE: To study emotional and behavioral disorders in children with specific language impairment (SLI). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group included 60 children with a diagnosis of specific expressive language impairment at the age of 4-6 years. The following methods were used to assess emotional and behavioral disorders: the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, the SNAP-IV scale, and the Questionnaire created by G.P. Lavrentieva and T.M. Titarenko. To objectify the severity of speech disorders, 10-point scales were used, assessing the level of comprehension of the addressed speech

[Auditory processing in specific language disorder].

INTRODUCTION: Specific language impairment (SLI) is diagnosed when a child has difficulty in producing or understanding spoken language for no apparent reason. The diagnosis in made when language development is out of keeping with other aspects of development, and possible explanatory causes have been excluded. DEVELOPMENT: During the last years neurosciences have approached to the study of SLI. The ability to process two or more rapidly presented, successive, auditory stimuli is believed to underlie successful language acquisition. It has been proposed that SLI is the consequence of low-leve

Defining dyslexia as a developmental language disorder.

Despite recent developments in research and theory, investigators and practitioners continue to rely on rather traditional definitions of dyslexia. This paper discusses some of the problems with traditional definitions and reviews a rapidly growing body of research that suggests a more comprehensive definition. According to this definition, dyslexia is a developmental language disorder that involves a deficit(s) in phonological processing. This disorder manifests itself in various phonological difficulties as well as a specific reading disability.

The Role of Glutamate in Language and Language Disorders - Evidence from ERP and Pharmacologic Studies.

Current models of language processing do not address mechanisms at the neurotransmitter level, nor how pharmacologic agents may improve language function(s) in seemingly disparate disorders. L-Glutamate, the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the human brain, is extensively involved in various higher cortical functions. We postulate that the physiologic role of L-Glutamate neurotransmission extends to the regulation of language access, comprehension, and production, and that disorders in glutamatergic transmission and circuitry contribute to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases a

Working Memory and Linguistic Performance of Dual Language Learners With and Without Developmental Language Disorders.

Purpose This research note describes the use of working memory measures as potential indicators of developmental language disorders (DLD) in preschool-age dual language learners from Spanish-speaking backgrounds. This report is an extension of early work, completed by the same authors that described the diagnostic accuracy of a Spanish nonword repetition task. Method One hundred thirty Spanish-speaking families with preschool-age children participated; 37 children had DLD, and 93 were typically developing. Families were recruited from early childhood programs in three states in the western reg

Language disorders subsequent to left cerebellar lesions: a case for bilateral cerebellar involvement in language?

BACKGROUND: Crossed cerebello-cerebral diaschisis, reflecting a functional depression of supratentorial language areas due to reduced input via cerebello-cortical pathways, may represent the neuropathological mechanism responsible for language deficits associated with cerebellar pathology. Although it has been proposed that language is lateralized to the right cerebellar hemisphere, recent clinical and neuroimaging studies suggest that the cerebellum may bilaterally influence the regulation of language, with the left cerebellar hemisphere also contributing to the mediation of language via ipsi

[Value of the Heidelberg Language Development Test in diagnosis of children with language development disorders].

Diagnosis of developmental speech and language disorders in accordance with the ICD-10 is to be based on the psychometric assessment of speech and language performance. In the present study the clinical validity of the Heidelberger Sprachentwicklungstest (HSET) for diagnosing expressive language disorders was assessed by comparing HSET subtest results for 92 children aged 4 to 10 years who had various speech and language disorders with the children's scores on another language test, a cognitive test and clinical findings. The HSET scores differed considerably from the clinical ratings of the s

Language diversity, language disorder, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder among youth sentenced to detention in Western Australia.

BACKGROUND: While studies confirm high prevalence of language disorder among justice-involved young people, little is known about the impact of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) on language among this population. It is also not clear how language skills vary according to language diversity in Australian youth justice settings, where a disproportionate number of justice-involved youth are Aboriginal and may not speak Standard Australian English (SAE) as their first language. Language skills are important to understand, as language disorder and language difference can lead to a mismatch bet

Developmental language disorder and the ubiquity of language in the world - a commentary on Iverson & Williams (2026).

In their review article, Developmental Language Disorders: A Hidden Condition with Lifelong Impact, Iverson and Williams (2026) cover all the ground from the importance of language and its infusion across daily tasks to the characteristics, assessment and management of a neurodevelopmental condition known as Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). The former is an important inclusion to understanding the impact of the latter, and so my commentary discusses both components. The article concludes with major challenges to investigations and support of DLD, which I add to and join in the call to ra

Language disorders in patients with striatal lesions: Deciphering the role of the striatum in language performance.

The classical neural model of language refers to a cortical network involving frontal, parietal and temporal regions. However, patients with subcortical lesions of the striatum have language difficulties. We investigated whether the striatum is directly involved in language or whether its role in decision-making has an indirect effect on language performance, by testing carriers of Huntington's disease (HD) mutations and controls. HD is a genetic neurodegenerative disease primarily affecting the striatum and causing language disorders. We asked carriers of the HD mutation in the premanifest (b

Altered efficiency of white matter connections for language function in children with language disorder.

To characterize structural white matter substrates associated with language functions in children with language disorders (LD), a psychometry-driven diffusion tractography network was investigated with canonical correlation analysis (CCA), which can reliably predict expressive and receptive language scores from the nodal efficiency (NE) of the obtained network. The CCA found that the NE values of six regions: left inferior-frontal-opercular, left insular, left angular gyrus, left superior-temporal-gyrus, right hippocampus, and right cerebellar-lobule were highly correlated with language scores

The effects of heritage multilingualism on foreign language learning: a comparison of children with typical language development and developmental language disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Both multilingualism and developmental language disorder (DLD) may be associated with inferior performance in the majority language, albeit for different reasons. At the same time, there is a growing body of evidence that multilingualism may have a positive effect on foreign language performance. This study tests the hypothesis that the positive effects of multilingualism on foreign language learning may be smaller in children with DLD compared to their multilingual peers with typical language development. METHODS: In a 2 × 2 design, we compare the effects of multilingualism and

The Impact of an Extra Chromosome on Language: Developmental Language Disorder in Sex Chromosome Trisomies.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the language and cognitive skills of preschool children with sex chromosome trisomies (SCTs) with and without a co-diagnosis of developmental language disorder (DLD), considering possible differences between SCT types (i.e., XXX, XXY, and XYY). METHOD: Fifty-five children with a prenatally diagnosed SCT (19 XXX, 25 XXY, and 11 XYY) aged 48-64 months were included in the study. The presence of a DLD diagnosis or other neurodevelopmental disorder was established by structured interviews, while cognitive and language skills were assessed using a test battery incl
