[An auto control comparison of the use of ProSeal laryngeal mask airway and standard laryngeal mask airway for positive pressure ventilation].

OBJECTIVE: To compare the ProSeal laryngeal mask airway (PLMA) and the standard laryngeal mask airway (SLMA) for intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV) in a randomized auto control design. METHODS: Fifty adult patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status 1-2, scheduled for elective plastic surgery under general anesthesia were recruited. After the routine intravenous anesthesia induction, the PLMA and the SLMA were inserted randomly in sequence into each patient and inflated to an intracuff pressure of 60 cm H(2)O (1 cm H(2)O=0.098 kPa), airway seal pre

The laryngeal mask airway Unique versus the Soft Seal laryngeal mask: a randomized, crossover study in paralyzed, anesthetized patients.

We tested the hypothesis that ease of insertion, oropharyngeal leak pressure, fiberoptic position, ease of ventilation, and mucosal trauma are different for the Soft Seal laryngeal mask airway (SSLM) and the laryngeal mask airway Unique (LMA-U). Ninety paralyzed, anesthetized adult patients (ASA I-II; 18-80 yr old) were studied. Both devices were inserted into each patient in random order. Oropharyngeal leak pressure and fiberoptic position were determined during cuff inflation from 0-40 mL in 10-mL increments and at an intracuff pressure of 60 cm H(2)O. Ease of ventilation was determined by c

Size 2 ProSeal laryngeal mask airway: a randomized, crossover investigation with the standard laryngeal mask airway in paediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: One of the main concerns with the use of the standard laryngeal mask airway (SLMA) in small infants is that its low-pressure seal might be inadequate for positive pressure ventilation so that there is a risk of gas leakage into the stomach with the subsequent risk of regurgitation. The new ProSeal LMA (PLMA) has been shown to form a more effective seal than the SLMA and to facilitate gastric tube placement in adults. The first paediatric size PLMA became available recently. METHODS: Thirty anaesthetized, non-paralysed children aged 46 (19) months, weighing 16 (10-21) kg, were stud

[Endoscopic treatment with laryngeal masks for the removal of tracheobronchial foreign bodies].

We studied the endoscopic removal of tracheobronchial foreign bodies from 13 patients. Eight patients were treated under local anesthesia and 5 under general anesthesia. Complications included mild bleeding during endoscopic treatment of 3 patients. One patient was placed under general anesthesia because the patient was irritable and because hemorrhage made observation difficult. Laryngeal masks were used in 4 cases, and resulted in no complications. The follow-up courses ranged from 4 months to 12 years and were uneventful for all patients. Use of a fiberoptic bronchoscope in combination with

Clinical evaluation of the Baska Mask laryngeal mask in adult patients in ambulatory surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical performance of the Baska Mask, a new second-generation supraglottic airway device with a self-inflating cuff and two side suction channels for continuous aspiration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighty adult patients without difficult airways were prospectively included. Ease of insertion and number of attempts needed, quality of ventilation, airway seal pressure, fibreoptic view, ease of gastric access, and complications were assessed. Sizes 3, 4, 5 were analyzed and compared. RESULTS: First attempt insertion success rate was 88% and the overall rate was 100%, a

Nonintubated Uniportal Thoracoscopic Thymectomy with Laryngeal Mask.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether laryngeal mask anesthesia had more favorable postoperative outcomes than double-lumen tube intubation anesthesia in uniportal thoracoscopic thymectomy. METHODS: Data were collected retrospectively from December 2013 to December 2017. A total of 96 patients with anterior mediastinum mass underwent nonintubated uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy with laryngeal mask, and 129 patients underwent intubated uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy. A single incision of ∼3 cm was made in an intercostal space along the anterior axillary line. P

[Advanced indications of the laryngeal mask - Limitations of use].

The use of extraglottic airway devices (EGA) is well accepted for airway management for certain classic indications such as general anaesthesia during limb surgery in the supine position. Furthermore, EGA have been deemed a useful tool during the management of an unrecognized difficult airway. On the other hand, the use of EGA has been controversially discussed for advanced indications such as during general anaesthesia during laparoscopic surgery and in coexisting morbid obesity. This article provides an evidence based review of the role of EGA during a variety of indications and is designed

Emergency airway management with laryngeal mask airway.

When used correctly, laryngeal mask airway is a life saver. We report two cases wherein it was used for rescue airway management and as a ventilatory device during anesthesia. It is concluded that an anesthetist should be familiar with the use of this device.

[Anaesthesia for bronchial echoendoscopy: experience with the laryngeal mask].

INTRODUCTION: Endobronchial ultrasound guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) has recently been shown to be an accurate modality in the diagnosis and staging of mediastinal lymph node metastases. This procedure takes significantly longer than a conventional bronchoscopy and may therefore cause more discomfort. Since its introduction into respiratory practice in France, several airway management strategies have been used. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Both anaesthesia care and procedural sedation services share the goals of providing the patient with comfort during a potentially distressi

Laryngeal mask airway for the interhospital transport of neonates.

Airway control during interhospital transport may present enormous management difficulties, even for experienced personnel. The laryngeal mask airway is an airway management device that has been established as a safe reliable tool in adult and pediatric practice. We describe 2 cases of successful interhospital transfer of infants with congenital airway malformations with the use of the laryngeal mask airway, and we review the literature.

[First clinical impressions of ProSeal laryngeal mask].

ProSeal laryngeal mask airway (PLMA, LMA-ProSeal) is a newly developed laryngeal mask airway intended to overcome two major disadvantages of the conventional laryngeal mask airway, i.e., poor protection of the airway from gastric regurgitation and low sealing effect around the laryngeal inlet. The new PLMA can provide air-tight sealing by a second cuff positioned at the back of the mask and a bypass channel for the alimentary tract by a second tube (drain tube) opening at the tip of the mask. However, clinical feature of this new device has been assessed by few authors. Forty adult patients (1

The LMA 'ProSeal'--a laryngeal mask with an oesophageal vent.

We describe a new laryngeal mask airway (LMA) that incorporates a second tube placed lateral to the airway tube and ending at the tip of the mask. The second tube is intended to separate the alimentary and respiratory tracts. It should permit access to or escape of fluids from the stomach and reduce the risks of gastric insufflation and pulmonary aspiration. It can also determine the correct positioning of the mask. A second posterior cuff is fitted to improve the seal. A preliminary crossover comparison with the standard mask in 30 adult female patients showed no differences in insertion, tra

The laryngeal mask airway: tool for airway management.

The laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is possibly the most significant recent advance in airway management. Designed to be passed into the hypopharynx without a laryngoscope, the LMA was conceived after bioengineering principles were applied to postmortem specimens of the adult larynx. The LMA has gained widespread, worldwide popularity and was approved for use in the United States in 1992. Sound knowledge of this device is important for all health care workers involved in airway management because it may become a standard item of resuscitation equipment when intubation is difficult. The use of laryngeal mask airway for tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.

PURPOSE: Patients undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy traditionally receive anesthesia with endotracheal intubation (ETT) for airway management. The laryngeal mask airway (LMA) may be used instead and may be associated with less airway stimulation and shorter operating room times. The purpose of this study was to report on a large cohort of patients undergoing tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy while using the LMA for airway maintenance during anesthesia. METHODS: Patients undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy between January 6, 2017 and January 6, 2020 with a LMA were reviewed fo
