Oncocytic Papillary Cystadenoma: A Case of a Misdiagnosed Laryngeal Mass.

Cystadenomas are benign neoplasms found in major and minor salivary glands. In cases where both oncocytic cells and papillary architecture, without a lymphoid component, exist, the lesion is called oncocytic papillary cystadenoma (OPC). OPCs are rarely encountered in the laryngeal region and that is why they are usually misdiagnosed as other types of laryngeal tumors. Hereby, we present a case of a misdiagnosed laryngeal OPC in an attempt to raise awareness of this rare entity, both for the surgeon performing the excision of the laryngeal mass and for the pathologists examining the specimen.

Nonepithelial Tumors of the Larynx: Single-Institution 13-Year Review with Radiologic-Pathologic Correlation.

Nonepithelial tumors of the larynx are rare and represent a minority of all laryngeal neoplasms. Imaging has an important role in the diagnosis, treatment planning, and surveillance of these entities. However, unfamiliarity with these neoplasms can cause diagnostic difficulties for radiologists, especially because many of the imaging findings are nonspecific. By using a systematic approach based on clinical history, patient age and gender, lesion location, endoscopic results, and specific imaging findings, the differential diagnosis can often be narrowed. These tumors typically affect the subm

Paraganglioma of the inferior laryngeal paraganglia. A case report.

Laryngeal paragangliomas are uncommon, usually benign neoplasms. The overwhelming majority of these tumors are supraglottic, arising from the superior laryngeal parasympathetic paraganglia. Few paragangliomas of the infraglottic region have been described. We describe the case of a 35-year-old man with a family history of carotid body tumors who presented with an infraglottic paraganglioma.

Simultaneous Malignant and Benign Nonepithelial Neoplasms of the Larynx-A Case Report and Literature Review.

Nonepithelial tumors of the larynx are relatively rare neoplasms of the head and neck. The chondrosarcoma, which develops commonly from cricoid and thyroid cartilage, stands for 0.2% of the laryngeal malignant neoplasms. The rhabdomyoma is even more uncommon benign tumor developing from the laryngeal striated muscles. The clinical manifestation and the treatment options depend on the histopathological evaluation, tumor localization, and its size. In presented case, the simultaneous occurrence of benign and malignant tumors of mesenchymal origin in the patient's larynx was provoking hoarseness,

Primary composite lymphoma of the larynx, composed of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified, presenting as left subglottic tracheal fistula, esophageal diverticulum, and neck abscess.

Primary laryngeal lymphoma occurs very rarely, accounting for far less than 1% of primary malignant laryngeal neoplasms. To the best of our knowledge, primary laryngeal composite lymphoma has not been reported in the literature. Herein, we report the first case of primary laryngeal composite lymphoma composed of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified (PTCL, NOS), in a 43-year-old man. Of special interest is the patient's unique clinical presentation of left subglottic tracheal fistula, esophageal diverticulum, and neck abscess with no disc

Local morphologic changes related to laryngeal carcinoma.

In a series of 178 patients who underwent partial or total laryngectomy for laryngeal carcinoma, the morphologic changes at a distance from the neoplasm were investigated with whole organ serial sections. We found 60 cases with extensive squamous metaplasia of the epithelium outside of the vocal cords, 24 case with hyperplastic epithelium of the vocal cords, 29 cases with mild or moderate dysplasia, 5 cases with foci of in situ carcinoma, 3 cases with a second carcinoma with minimal stromal invasion, and 4 cases with a double synchronous primary carcinoma. In 55 cases we observed the contempor

[The usefulness of multislice CT in diagnosis of some laryngeal diseases].

The usefulness of helical multidetector computed tomography in diagnosis of some laryngeal and tracheal diseases was presented. Also, the benefits of CT applications in the evaluation of the treatment results were emphasized. Based on the CT images the value of the CT in laryngeal neoplasms, laryngeal and tracheal stenosis and vocal cord paralysis was confirmed. The excellent precision and resolution is helpful in qualification for suitable therapy due to the cancer. In laryngeal and tracheal stenosis helical MDCT helps to choose the treatment strategy as well. In case of vocal cord paralysis

Screening examination of the larynx and pharynx during upper gastrointestinal panendoscopy.

With the flexible fiberoptic esophagogastroduodenoscopes now in use, the larynx and posterior pharynx can be easily viewed during routine upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Screening laryngeal-pharyngeal examinations were carried out during 1120 upper gastrointestinal endoscopies. Mean additional examination time was 30 sec. Thirty-nine laryngeal lesions were detected, mostly variants of chronic laryngitis. Two patients had leukoplakia, one of whom on subsequent biopsy revealed squamous cell cancer. The brief additional endoscopic time may result in the detection of early curable neoplasms. Thu

Primary marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of the larynx.

Extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas limited to the larynx are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all laryngeal neoplasms. The most common site of development of primary laryngeal lymphomas is the supraglottic region. In most cases, the presenting symptoms are hoarseness, dysphagia, dyspnea, and cervical lymphadenopathy. In these cases, larynx lymphoma was the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type and located in the supraglottic area.

CT diagnosis of laryngeal cricoid chondrosarcoma.

Computerized tomography is the imaging method of choice for evaluation of neoplastic involvement of the larynx. There are unusual primary neoplasms of the larynx which include chondroma and chondrosarcoma. These lesions may cause vocal cord paralysis and respiratory symptoms secondary to compression of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. We present a single patient with computerized tomographic imaging of laryngeal chondrosarcoma resulting in unilateral vocal cord paralysis and hoarseness.

[Abscess of the larynx resembling a tumor].

The authors report a case of laryngeal abcess due to Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, of the preepiglottic space with destruction of the epiglottis and granulomatous reaction of the epiglottic endolaryngeal side. The differential diagnosis of the endoscopic image includes neoplasm, granulomatous diseases and laryngeal abscess. Biopsies revealed the diagnosis of laryngeal abscess without habitual causing factors. The treatment consisted in CO2 laser microsurgery with debulking, as complete as possible, of the granulomatous reaction in association with adapted antibiotherapy.

Supraglottic Neuroendocrine Carcinoma: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are rare in the head and neck region, with the larynx being the most common site. To date, nearly 700 cases of laryngeal neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) have been reported in the literature, with an estimated incidence as low as 0.23%. This type of cancer is more prevalent among men aged 50-83 who are heavy smokers. NENs encompass paragangliomas and epithelial neoplasms. The latter categories include neuroendocrine tumors, or typical carcinoids, and NECs, or atypical carcinoids. Due to their nonspecific and often misleading presentation, and given the rarity of t

Transglottic laryngeal paraganglioma: a rare location for this tumor.

Laryngeal paragangliomas are rare neoplasms that originate in the neural crest cells of the laryngeal paraganglia. Although the vast majority of these tumors are benign, they exhibit different types of biologic behavior that require different treatment modalities. Therefore, differentiation among these tumors is extremely important. We report a rare case of laryngeal paraganglioma that presented as a transglottic lesion in a 68-year-old man. The atypical location of the tumor led to difficulties in diagnosis and management. To the best of our knowledge, this is only the third such case to be r

Causes of recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis.

The recurrent laryngeal nerve in its course from the brain stem to the larynx follows a path that brings it in proximity to numerous structures. These structures can interfere with its function by pressure or by disruption of the nerve caused by disease invading the nerve. The various causes of recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis that I have observed during the past 24 years are reported. In 134 patients with recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, the left recurrent nerve was most commonly involved. Malignant neoplasms of the lung and pulmonary tuberculosis were the most frequent causes of the p

Expression of C-X-C chemokine receptor type 7 in otorhinolaryngologic neoplasms.

INTRODUCTION: C-X-C chemokine receptor type 7 (CXCR7) has recently been characterised as a novel receptor for the C-X-C motif chemokine 12 (CXCL12)/stromal cell-derived factor 1-alpha. CXCR7 has been thought to play an important role in the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis, angiogenesis and tumour metastasis. The present study aimed to examine the expression of CXCR7 in tissue samples of laryngeal cancer and maxillary sinus carcinoma to determine its role in the development of otorhinolaryngologic neoplasms. METHODS: Samples of otorhinolaryngologic neoplasms were obtained from 17 patien

Purulent chondritis of thyroid cartilage.

We report a case of a 77-year-old female with purulent chondritis of the thyroid cartilage who was initially referred for laryngeal neoplasm. Purulent chondritis of the laryngeal cartilage is a rare entity with three reports in the literature. The unique CT imaging features of expansile laryngeal cartilage with peripheral rim enhancement and central fluid-attenuation correlate to the abscess formation between the inner and outer perichondria. The correct imaging assessment prompts surgical management and avoid misdiagnosis.
