OBJECTIVE: Prolonged laryngoscopy and failure to intubate are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Need to improve glottic visualisation and ease of intubation has led to the introduction of various types of laryngoscopes. This study compares the effectiveness of C-MAC video laryngoscope (VL) with McCoy laryngoscope in patients with an anticipated difficult airway.
METHODS: This prospective randomised single-blinded single-centre study included patients with modified Mallampati grades 3 and 4, divided into two groups I and II of 65 patients each. Group I was intubated using C-MA

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Video laryngoscopes resemble traditional laryngoscopes, but they have a video chip embedded in the tip of laryngoscope blade. This enables the operator to "look around the corners" which is not possible with conventional direct laryngoscopes. The present study was undertaken to compare Truview video laryngoscope and Macintosh laryngoscope for glottis visualization, ease of tracheal intubation, and associated hemodynamic response.
SETTING: The study was conducted in operation theater in a medical college.
STUDY DESIGN: It was a randomized prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Video laryngoscopes provide better visualisation of glottis and easier tracheal intubation as compared to the McCoy laryngoscope. However, cost constraints limit their use. The video-assisted McCoy laryngoscope provides the advantage of both, the McCoy laryngoscope and standard video laryngoscope and is cost-effective. The present study was conducted to compare the standard McCoy laryngoscope and video-assisted McCoy laryngoscope in patients with simulated difficult airway.
METHODS: This randomised single-blind crossover study included 60 patients of either gender aged 18

INTRODUCTION: Endotracheal intubation in the ICU is a challenging procedure and is frequently associated with life-threatening complications. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the C-MAC® video laryngoscope on laryngeal view and intubation success compared with direct laryngoscopy.
METHODS: In a single-center, prospective, comparative before-after study in an anesthetist-lead surgical ICU of a tertiary university hospital, predictors of potentially difficult tracheal intubation, number of intubation attempts, success rate and glottic view were evaluated during a 2-year stu

BACKGROUND: Intubation of the trachea in the pre-hospital setting may be lifesaving in severely ill and injured patients. However, tracheal intubation is frequently difficult to perform in this challenging environment, is associated with a lower success rate, and failed tracheal intubation constitutes an important cause of morbidity. Novel indirect laryngoscopes, such as the Glidescope and the AWS laryngoscopes may reduce this risk.
METHODS: We compared the efficacy of these devices to the Macintosh laryngoscope when used by 25 Advanced Paramedics proficient in direct laryngoscopy, in a rando

BACKGROUND: Endotracheal intubation (ETI) is a commonly performed emergency procedure used to secure the airways in critically ill patients. Despite its importance, ETI presents significant risks to patients with difficult airways. The availability of different types of laryngoscopes, most notably video laryngoscopes and direct laryngoscopes (DLs), has contributed to improved intubation success rates and reduced complications. While numerous studies have compared video laryngoscopes and DLs, there remains a limited synthesis of evidence evaluating the full range of all laryngoscopes across dif

We assessed the effect of modifying standard Magill forceps on the laryngeal introduction of an Eschmann stylet during nasotracheal intubations with three indirect laryngoscopes (Airtraq™, C-MAC(®) or GlideScope(®)) in patients with predicted difficult intubation. We allocated 50 participants to each laryngoscope. The stylet was advanced by one forceps followed by the other (standard or modified), with each sequence allocated to 25/50 for each laryngoscope. There were no differences in rates of failed tracheal intubation with the allocated laryngoscopes: 6/50, 5/50 and 5/50, respectively. An E

The aim of the present paper is to review the literature regarding video-laryngoscopes (Storz V-Mac and C-Mac, Glidescope, McGrath, Pentax-Airway Scope, Airtraq and Bullard) and discuss their clinical role in airway management. Video-laryngoscopes are new intubation devices, which provide an indirect view of the upper airway. In difficult airway management, they improve Cormack-Lehane grade and achieve the same or a higher intubation success rate in less time, compared with direct laryngoscopes. Despite the very good visualization of the glottis, the insertion and advancement of the endotrache

Background Critically ill cardiac patients may decompensate suddenly owing to arrhythmias and worsening haemodynamics, often necessitating emergent endotracheal intubation. Training in airway management is usually neglected for residents in the cardiac intensive care unit (ICU). There is an unmet need to train cardiology residents in the swift management of airways in the acute setting of a cardiac arrest. Methods In this manikin-based cross-over study, we compared King's vision channelled (KVC) and non-channelled video laryngoscopes (King's vision [KV]) with Macintosh direct laryngoscopes (DL

Background A disposable i-view® video laryngoscope (Intersurgical Limited, Berkshire, United Kingdom) is yet to be used to educate medical and dental students, who must learn endotracheal intubation skills. Additionally, the advantage of the i-view® use for the purpose, compared with the Macintosh laryngoscope, is unknown. We aimed to first determine whether the i-view® video laryngoscope enhances endotracheal intubation skills among dental students compared with the Macintosh laryngoscope. Methodology A prospective, observational, simulation study was conducted among 67 dental students in the

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: During direct laryngoscopy (DL), intubation using armored endotracheal tubes (ETTs) requires help of bougies, stylets, or Magill's forceps, which leads to unnecessary prolongation in the intubation times. The channeled blade of King Vision (KV) video laryngoscope is likely to obviate the need of these equipments for a successful intubation using armored tubes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: After approval from Institutional Ethics Committee and informed consent, 100 patients were randomized to receive endotracheal intubation using armored ETTs either with KV video laryngoscope (VL

BACKGROUND: Single-use laryngoscopes are becoming used more widely.
METHODS: We compared six types of single-use laryngoscope with the standard Macintosh laryngoscope using the Laerdal SimMan patient simulator. Twenty anaesthetists attempted to intubate the simulator with standardized airway settings allowing a full view of the vocal cords ('easy intubation'). The airway settings were then changed so that only the posterior part of the glottis was visible ('difficult intubation') and the anaesthetists were asked to intubate the simulator again.
RESULTS: The time to intubate with the standard

Foreign body ingestion remains a common cause of pediatric emergency surgery with button battery ingestion of particular concern. Newer, higher power lithium batteries can cause catastrophic damage of the gastrointestinal tract through erosion of mucosa into surrounding structures. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are paramount. We present a case of an 11-month-old with a button battery lodged in the proximal esophagus. The extraction was difficult and only made possible with the assistance of a video laryngoscope. We make the case for more routine usage of video laryngoscopy for removal of fore

A cook airway exchange catheter is a long hollow and semirigid catheter which is routinely used for endotracheal tube (ETT) exchange in the intensive care unit setting or even in the operating room in an event of unexpected difficult airway. We describe a novel technique of using an ETT exchanger with the help of a rigid laryngoscope to facilitate intubation as a strategy in a patient with an anticipated difficult airway due to laryngeal cancer presenting as stridor with respiratory distress.

Occasionally intubation of patients is difficult using a video laryngoscope (GlideScope, Verathon Medical) because of an inability to guide the endotracheal tube to the glottis or pass the tube into the trachea despite an adequate view of the glottis. We examined methods to improve success when this difficulty occurs. A literature search revealed 253 potential sources, with 25 meeting search criteria: 7 randomized controlled trials, 4 descriptive studies, 8 case series, and 6 case reports. Findings from the randomized controlled trials suggested that using a flexible-tipped endotracheal tube w

The objective is to describe an innovative laryngoscope developed to improve visualization, provide greater exposure, and enhance precision and success during transoral procedures. A retrospective review of 170 patients who underwent transoral surgery with a new distending laryngoscope was conducted. We compared and contrasted our exposure within the oropharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx using the laryngoscope with that of currently available instrumentation. Specific mechanical dimensions of the laryngoscope along with the provided working field were calculated. Experience with the new laryngos
