Symptom Profiles of Latina Breast Cancer Survivors: A Latent Class Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Symptom research among Latinas with breast cancer is limited-especially as it relates to multiple co-occurring symptoms. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to identify subgroups (latent classes) of Latinas who have distinct symptom profiles while receiving radiation, chemotherapy, and/or hormonal therapy for breast cancer. METHODS: This secondary analysis included intake data from three randomized trials of supportive care psychosocial interventions for Latinas treated for breast cancer (n = 290). Prevalence of 12 symptoms-measured using the General Symptom Distress Scale-was en

Comorbidity profile of mental disorders among adolescents: A latent class analysis.

The aim of this study was to identify the number of comorbidity profiles among adolescents. Sociodemographic factors associated with the comorbidity profiles were also examined. Latent class analysis was conducted using data from the National Comorbidity Survey Adolescent Supplement (NCS-A), a representative sample of adolescents (N = 10,123) in the United States. Latent classes were derived from 26 lifetime mental disorders which were assessed using the World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Instrument (CIDI). A three-class solution provided the best fit for the data, wi

Identifying Poly-Victimization Among Prisoners: An Application of Latent Class Analysis.

Research suggests that people in prison may be especially vulnerable to victimization and may be more likely to report exposure to multiple types, known as poly-victimization. However, the literature surrounding patterns of victimization among prisoners is limited. Before we can fully understand the variation in victimization experiences among prisoners, a necessary first step is to identify victim profiles within prisons. The current study utilizes data from the 2004 Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities and employs latent class analysis to identify unique victim prof

Neuropsychological syndromes associated with Alzheimer's/vascular dementia: a latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic autopsy studies show mixed Alzheimer's disease (AD)/vascular pathology in many patients. Moreover, clinical research shows that it is not uncommon for AD and vascular dementia (VaD) patients to be equally impaired on memory, executive, or other neurocognitive tests. However, this clinical heterogeneity has not been incorporated into the new diagnostic criteria for AD (Dubois et al., 2010; McKhann et al., 2011). OBJECTIVE: The current research applied Latent Class Analysis (LCA) to a protocol of six neuropsychological parameters to identify phenotypic subtypes from a

Perceived risk associated with ecstasy use: a latent class analysis approach.

This study aims to define categories of perceived health problems among ecstasy users based on observed clustering of their perceptions of ecstasy-related health problems. Data from a community sample of ecstasy users (n=402) aged 18 to 30, in Ohio, was used in this study. Data was analyzed via Latent Class Analysis (LCA) and Regression. This study identified five different subgroups of ecstasy users based on their perceptions of health problems they associated with their ecstasy use. Almost one third of the sample (28.9%) belonged to a class with "low level of perceived problems" (Class 4). A

Pharmacoepidemiological characterization of psychotropic drugs consumption using a latent class analysis.

France has one of the highest recorded rates of psychotropic use of drugs compared with other European countries, especially for anxiolytics, hypnotics and antidepressants. The aim of this study was to characterize the use of three psychotropic drugs among the most prescribed in France (bromazepam, paroxetine, zolpidem) using reimbursement databases in real-life conditions. Individuals from a region affiliated to the French General Health Insurance Scheme, who had received at least two dispensings of bromazepam, paroxetine or zolpidem reimbursed between 1 January and 30 June 2008, were include

Adverse childhood experiences and adult psychopathology: A latent class analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are linked to poor mental health outcomes, yet much of the existing research focuses on cumulative risk rather than the impact of distinct types of adversity. This limits insights into how specific ACE patterns influence psychopathology. Additionally, inquiries into links between ACE exposure and mental health typically focus on a single symptom class, overlooking co-occurring psychopathologies. OBJECTIVE: We used latent class analysis (LCA) to identify distinct patterns of ACE exposure and examine associations with anxiety, depression, post-tr

Significance of Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction Phenotypes Identified by Latent Class Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Inducible laryngeal obstruction (ILO) is characterized by symptomatic inappropriate adduction of the vocal cords during respiration. There is a spectrum of clinical ILO presentations, and it is unknown whether this heterogeneity reflects pathogenesis or natural history. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to objectively identify clinically relevant ILO phenotypes. METHODS: We included consecutive patients assessed between March 2016 and September 2023 with laryngoscopy evidence of ILO. Patients were analyzed using latent class analysis (LCA) by age, self-reported symptom triggers, and comorbidi

Latent class analysis of emotions experienced during compulsive hair-pulling episodes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Reasons for compulsive hair pulling are heterogeneous and not fully understood. Given that many people who experience compulsive hair pulling do not respond to treatment, identifying subgroups can inform potential mechanisms and treatment design. METHODS: We sought to identify empirical subgroups among participants in an online treatment program for trichotillomania (N = 1728). A latent class analysis was used to identify patterns of emotions associated with compulsive hair-pulling episodes. RESULTS: Six classes of participants were found which reflected three pred

Latent class analysis identifies multimorbidity patterns in pigs with respiratory disease.

Respiratory disease is one of the major causes of losses to the pig industry worldwide. The pig subsector is the largest component of the livestock sector in the Philippines. Using lung scoring, this study aimed to estimate the prevalence of thoracic lesions in slaughter-age pigs in two provinces in the Philippines (Batangas and Albay) and define classes for respiratory health of pigs characterised by different patterns of thoracic lesions. A total of 260 pigs from Batangas and 300 pigs from Albay from either commercial or backyard farm types were included in this cross-sectional study. Lungs

Symptoms-Based Phenotypes Among Women With Dysmenorrhea: A Latent Class Analysis.

Dysmenorrhea is highly prevalent and may increase women's risk for developing other chronic pain conditions. Although it is highly variable, symptom-based dysmenorrhea phenotypes have not been identified. The aims of the study were to identify symptom-based dysmenorrhea phenotypes and examine their relationships with demographic and clinical characteristics. In a cross-sectional study, 762 women with dysmenorrhea rated severity of 14 dysmenorrhea-related symptoms. Using latent class analysis, we identified three distinctive phenotypes. Women in the "mild localized pain" phenotype ( n = 202, 26

Childhood sexual abuse and adolescent substance use: a latent class analysis.

Children who have exposure to child sexual abuse (CSA) are at particular risk for developing substance abuse in adolescence, but the extent to which CSA may shape patterns of adolescent substance use remains uncertain. The aim of this paper is to characterize the variations in patterns of adolescent substance use and to examine the association between CSA and qualitatively distinct patterns of adolescent substance use. Latent class analyses identified homogenous groups of adolescents with similar patterns of substance use using a sample of 1019 adolescents (mean age: 15.9 years; range: 13-18)

Identifying classes of persons with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning: a latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Persons with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning are often studied as a single group with similar characteristics. However, there are indications that differences exist within this population. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify classes of persons with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning and to examine whether these classes are related to individual and/or environmental characteristics. METHODS: Latent class analysis was performed using file data of 250 eligible participants with a mean age of 26.1 (SD 13

TRANSITIONS IN DRUG USE AMONG HIGH-RISK WOMEN: AN APPLICATION OF LATENT CLASS AND LATENT TRANSITION ANALYSIS.

Latent class analysis (LCA) is a statistical approach to identifying underlying subgroups (i.e. latent classes) of individuals based on their responses to a set of observed categorical variables. Latent transition analysis (LTA) extends this framework to longitudinal data in order to estimate the incidence of transitions over time in latent class membership. This study provides an introduction to LCA and LTA, including the use of grouping variables and covariates, and demonstrates the use of two SAS ® procedures (PROC LCA and PROC LTA) to fit these models. The empirical demonstration involved

Latent class analysis of delusion-proneness: exploring the latent structure of the Peters et al. delusions inventory.

Latent class analysis (LCA) has emerged as the best suitable statistical tool to identify separate dimensions (latent classes) when analyzing dichotomous data; its objective is to categorize people into classes using the observed items and to identify those items that best distinguish between classes. LCA was applied to the Peters et al. delusions inventory, an inventory in a dichotomous format (Yes/No) aimed at investigating proneness to delusion in the general population. The study involved 82 patients diagnosed with a psychotic disorder and 210 well-matched healthy controls from the communi
