Gelotophobia and the challenges of implementing laughter into virtual agents interactions.

This study investigated which features of AVATAR laughter are perceived threatening for individuals with a fear of being laughed at (gelotophobia), and individuals with no gelotophobia. Laughter samples were systematically varied (e.g., intensity, laughter pitch, and energy for the voice, intensity of facial actions of the face) in three modalities: animated facial expressions, synthesized auditory laughter vocalizations, and motion capture generated puppets displaying laughter body movements. In the online study 123 adults completed, the GELOPH <15 > (Ruch and Proyer, 2008a,b) and rated rando

Motor and Limbic System Contribution to Emotional Laughter across the Lifespan.

Laughter is a universal human behavior generated by the cooperation of different systems toward the construction of an expressive vocal pattern. Given the sensitivity of neuroimaging techniques to movements, the neural mechanisms underlying laughter expression remain unclear. Herein, we characterized the neural correlates of emotional laughter using the onsets and the duration of laughter bursts to inform functional magnetic resonance imaging. Laughter-related blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) increases involved both the motor (motor cortex, supplementary motor area, frontal operculum) and t

Effects of mirthful laughter on pain tolerance: A randomized controlled investigation.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain is a debilitating condition that affects many people. Currently, there is no single treatment known to cure or assure relief from chronic pain. Accordingly, the management of patients' discomfort is an integral part of treating chronic pain. Such treatment, however, is not effective for many patients. We investigated whether mirthful laughter provided by comic relief can influence pain tolerance and muscle soreness in young healthy participants. METHODS: Forty participants underwent a randomized controlled cross-over designed experiment. Each participant was exposed

Pathological laughter and crying: A case series and proposal for a new classification.

BACKGROUND: Disorders of laughter and crying (DLC) are seen in several neuropsychiatric conditions. Their nomenclature remains under debate. METHODS: We present the clinical and imaging findings of 17 patients with DLC and introduce a new classification based on phenomenology and pathogenesis. According to intensity and frequency of laughter and crying (observed behavioral output), patients were divided into hypoactive or hyperactive DLC and subdivided into 5 subtypes: sensory (positive and negative), motor (positive and negative), and mixed. The sensory subtype is represented by disorders of

Laughter-inducing Interventions for Workplace Stress Management: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Mental health at work is a public health priority. Previous studies in the general population suggest that laughter-inducing interventions may support mental health. Their workplace potential warrants a scoping review. The aim of this study was to document, in the literature, the components and effectiveness of laughter-inducing interventions in the workplace. METHODS: A structured search strategy was applied to 6 databases. Studies assessing laughter-inducing interventions among workers using interventional designs were included. Two reviewers independently screened and extracted

Laughter ≠ Humour: Sounding, Face and Masculinity Between Prison and Street.

Humour and laughter have received increasing attention in narrative criminology, but existing scholarship has tended to collapse them into a single analytic entity. In this paper, we foreground the awkward spaces that lie in the space between. Based on two research projects carried out with street and justice-involved men in Scotland, where the fusion of masculinities, humour and 'patter' has for many years formed an important aspect of culture and identity, we first examine the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in moments where laughter follows humour. We then move onto an examination of hu

Pathological Laughter and Crying and Psychiatric Comorbidity After Traumatic Brain Injury.

There are limited data regarding the incidence of pathological laughter and crying (PLC) after traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study aimed to identify the occurrence of PLC in the first year after TBI and to determine whether there is a relationship between PLC and other clinical features or demographics. Subjects who sustained a first-time TBI were recruited from acute trauma units and were assessed at 3, 6, and 12 months after TBI. Rates of PLC at 3, 6, and 12 months after TBI were 21.4%, 17.5%, and 15.5%, respectively. Patients with PLC had higher percentages of psychiatric diagnoses, in

Laughter isn't always the best medicine, sometimes it's one of the symptoms.

Gelastic seizure is a rare type of seizure characterized by bouts of uncontrolled, stereotyped laughter and often associated with hypothalamic hamartomas. In this case study we review a patient with a low grade ganglioglioma in the temporal lobe, a rare type of brain tumor that commonly causes seizures. The 8-year-old ambidextrous patient presented with seizures starting four days prior to presentation, happening multiple times daily and with each seizure lasting for 5-15 s. The patient's neurological examination was normal between episodes, and VEEG recorded ictal laughing events originating

The Association between Laughter and Functional Dyspepsia in a Young Japanese Population.

UNLABELLED: The potential health benefits of laughter are recognized in relation to several chronic diseases. However, no study has yet investigated the association between laughter and functional dyspepsia (FD). The purpose of this study was to investigate this issue in a young Japanese population. METHODS: This study was conducted on 8923 Japanese university students. Information on the frequency of laughter and types of laughter-inducing situations, digestive symptoms (Rome III criteria) were obtained through a self-administered, web-based questionnaire. RESULTS: The percentage of respond

Pathological laughter in trigeminal schwannoma: case report and review of the literature.

Pathological laughter is an uncommon manifestation of neurosurgical diseases. Very few cases of trigeminal schwannoma have been reported in the literature presenting with pathological laughter as a predominant symptom. We are reporting on a case of multi-compartmental trigeminal schwannoma presenting as pathological laughter and discuss a review of the literature. A 23-year-old lady presented with pathological laughter, along with symptoms pertaining to other cranial nerves and cerebellar dysfunction. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain was suggestive of a dumbbell-shaped mass in the

Sharing laughter: the humour of pre-school children with Down syndrome.

Humour and laughter have often been portrayed as fundamentally cultural and social phenomena. They can be used to tell us about children's ability to engage socially and to understand others, but have rarely been explored for this purpose. The present paper summarises the results of a study of simple forms of humour in children with Down syndrome and with autism, two groups which are reported to differ in their sociality and interpersonal understanding. Sixteen children with Down syndrome and 19 children with autism, matched on non-verbal mental age, participated in a cross-sectional study. Pa

Simulated laughter immediately improves lipid layer thickness and tear meniscus height.

PURPOSE: Dry eye disease is a common condition associated with mental health. Daily simulated laughter for eight weeks has been shown to alleviate symptoms and signs of dry eye disease. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the immediate effects of laughter on tear film lipid layer thickness and tear meniscus height. METHODS: This was a single-center, self-controlled before-after trial. Participants aged 18 to 45 years with ocular surface disease index scores above 13 and non-invasive tear film break-up time below 8 s were included in the dry eye dise

Pathological Laughter: The First Manifestation of Intracerebral Haemorrhage Linked to Phenylephrine Overuse.

A 42-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with sudden-onset uncontrollable laughter, 'fou rire prodromique' (prodrome of crazy laughter), and left leg weakness. Imaging revealed a right cerebral haemorrhage of the premotor cortex corresponding to the leg cortical representation. A history of excess phenylephrine use for sinusitis and migraine was subsequently obtained. The patient's neurological recovery was good, enabling a return to her pre-stroke employment. The neurological causes of pathological laughter and the brain networks involved are discussed in this report. The rol
