Analysis of gut microbiota and the effect of lauric acid against necrotic enteritis in Clostridium perfringens and Eimeria side-by-side challenge model.

Gut microbiota has been demonstrated to be involved in intestinal nutrition, defense, and immunity, as well as participating in disease progression. This study was to investigate gut microbiota changes in chickens challenged with netB-positive Clostridium perfringens strain (CP1) and/or the predisposing Eimeria species (Eimeria) and fed diets with fishmeal supplementation. In addition, the effects of lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA), on necrotic enteritis (NE) reduction and modulation of microbiota were evaluated. The results demonstrated that microbial communities in the jejunum

Energy-sparing effect of oregano essential oil-lauric acid complex in broilers: Insights from serum metabolomics and 16S rRNA sequencing.

Dietary energy restriction typically impairs growth performance in broilers, whereas supplementation with an oregano essential oil-lauric acid complex (OEL) has been shown to improve feed efficiency under low‑energy conditions. However, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study integrated serum untargeted metabolomics with cecal 16S rRNA sequencing to elucidate the energy‑sparing mechanism of OEL. A total of 600 one‑day‑old Arbor Acres broilers were randomly allocated to five dietary treatments, three of which were selected for multi‑omics analysis: a normal‑energy control

Revealing the synergistic mechanism of ionic strength and cassava starch-lauric acid complexes in driving the transition of myofibrillar protein emulsion to emulsion gel.

The synergistic effects of ionic strength and cassava starch-lauric acid complexes (CS-LA) concentration on the emulsifying and gelling properties of myofibrillar proteins (MPs) were investigated. At low ionic strength, dispersion was promoted and ζ-potential increased by CS-LA, whereas excessive aggregation and larger particles were induced by 2.0% CS-LA. At high ionic strength, MPs were dispersed into monomers or oligomers, leading to the exposure of hydrophobic sites and facilitated binding with CS-LA. The emulsion containing 1.0% CS-LA exhibited optimal emulsifying activity and storage sta

A self-elastic chitosan sponge reinforced with lauric acid-modified quaternized chitosan and attapulgite to treat noncompressible hemorrhage and facilitate wound healing.

The development of self-elastic sponges with enhanced hemostatic and antibacterial properties to treat noncompressible hemorrhage and facilitate wound healing remains challenging. Herein, we prepared a chitosan sponge reinforced with lauric acid-modified quaternized chitosan (LQC) and attapulgite, features a porous structure, high self-elasticity, and rapid shape recovery. The incorporation of LQC conferred the sponge with an enhanced capacity to promote the adhesion, aggregation, and activation of blood cells, and resistance to infection by Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Methici

Electrochemiluminescent detection of chlorpromazine by selective preconcentration at a lauric acid-modified carbon paste electrode using tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II).

A new detection scheme for the determination of adsorbable coreactants of Ru(bpy)3(2+) electrochemiluminescent reaction is presented. It is based on selective preconcentration of coreactant onto an electrode, followed by Ru(bpy)3(2+) electrochemiluminescent detection. The coreactant employed is chlorpromazine. It was sensitively detected after 5-min preconcentration onto a lauric acid-modified carbon paste electrode. The linear concentration range was found to occur from 1 x 10(-8) to 3 x 10(-6) mol L-1 with a detection limit of 3.1 x 10(-9) mol L-1. The total analysis time is less than 10 min

Lauric acid and levodopa attenuate manganese-induced ovarian toxicity in balb/c mice via antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and steroidogenic pathways.

BACKGROUND: Environmental exposure to heavy metals such as manganese (Mn) is associated with reproductive toxicity, particularly in females. Mn-induced ovarian dysfunction involves oxidative stress, hormonal imbalance, inflammation, and disruption of steroidogenesis. Lauric acid (LA) and levodopa (LD) are bioactive compounds with known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study investigated the protective effects of LA and LD against Mn-induced ovarian toxicity in female BALB/c mice. METHODS: Thirty female BALB/c mice were randomly assigned to five groups (n = 6 per group): cont

Lauric acid attenuates hepato-metabolic complications and molecular alterations in high-fat diet-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in rats.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has emerged as a major chronic liver illness characterized by increase of lipid content in the liver. This study investigated the role of lauric acid to treat NAFLD in male adult Sprague Dawley rats. In this study, to induce NAFLD in the rats, a high-fat diet (HFD) was administered for eight consecutive weeks. Lauric acid groups received lauric acid (250 and 500 mg/kg; orally), concurrently with HFD for eight consecutive weeks. Lauric acid could ameliorate the serum levels of TG, TC, ALT, AST, blood glucose, and insulin. Moreover, lauric acid significan

Effects of intraduodenal administration of lauric acid and L-tryptophan, alone and combined, on gut hormones, pyloric pressures, and energy intake in healthy men.

BACKGROUND: The fatty acid, lauric acid ('C12'), and the amino acid, L-tryptophan ('Trp'), modulate gastrointestinal functions including gut hormones and pyloric pressures, which are important for the regulation of energy intake, and both potently suppress energy intake. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that the intraduodenal administration of C12 and Trp, at loads that do not affect energy intake individually, when combined will reduce energy intake, which is associated with greater modulation of gut hormones and pyloric pressures. DESIGN: Sixteen healthy, lean males (age: 24 ± 1.5 y) received 90

Lauric acid and microencapsulated zinc oxide have divergent effects on weaned pig growth performance, jejunal barrier function, and intestinal transcriptomic profiles.

Pharmacological zinc oxide (ZnO) and medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) have been evaluated as dietary interventions during the weaning phase. However, the effects of microencapsulated ZnO and C12:0, lauric acid (LA), are highly debated and poorly understood. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the independent and combined effects of LA and microencapsulated ZnO on growth performance, intestinal barrier function, and intestinal transcriptomic profiles in weaned pigs. A total of 256 pigs (21 days of age) were blocked by sex and assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments for 28 days:

Lauric acid improves hormonal profiles, antioxidant properties, sperm quality and histomorphometric changes in testis and epididymis of streptozotocin-induced diabetic infertility rats.

Lauric acid, a 12‑carbon atom medium chain fatty acid (MCFA) has strong antioxidant and antidiabetic activities. However, whether lauric acid can ameliorate hyperglycaemia-induced male reproductive damage remains unclear. The study aimed to determine the optimal dose of lauric acid with glucose-lowering activity, antioxidant potential and tissue-protective effects on the testis and epididymis of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Hyperglycaemia was induced in Sprague Dawley rats by an intravenous injection of STZ at a dose of 40 mg/kg body weight (bwt). Lauric acid (25, 50 and 100 mg/

Comparison of nitroethane, 2-nitro-1-propanol, lauric acid, Lauricidin® and the Hawaiian marine algae, Chaetoceros, for potential broad-spectrum control of anaerobically grown lactic acid bacteria.

The gastrointestinal tract of bovines often contains bacteria that contribute to disorders of the rumen, and may also contain foodborne or opportunistic human pathogens as well as bacteria capable of causing mastitis in cows. Thus there is a need to develop broad-spectrum therapies that are effective while not leading to unacceptably long antibiotic withdrawal times. The effects of the CH(4)-inhibitors nitroethane (2 mg/mL), 2-nitro-1-propanol (2 mg/mL), lauric acid (5 mg/mL), the commercial product Lauricidin® (5 mg/mL), and a finely ground product of the Hawaiian marine algae, Chaetoceros (1

NTP Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of Lauric Acid Diethanolamine Condensate (CAS NO. 120-40-1) in F344/N Rats and B6C3F1 Mice (Dermal Studies).

Lauric acid diethanolamine condensate is widely used in cosmetics, shampoos, soaps, and related consumer products, to which there is extensive human exposure. Because of the lack of information about potential risks associated with long-term exposure, lauric acid diethanolamine condensate, coconut oil acid diethanolamine condensate, and oleic acid diethanolamine condensate were selected as representative of the class of diethanolamides for evaluation of prechronic toxicity and carcinogenic potential. Male and female F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice were exposed to lauric acid diethanolamine condens

Brain Immune Cell Infiltration and Serum Metabolomic Characteristics Reveal that Lauric Acid Promotes Immune Cell Infiltration in Brain and Streptococcus suis Meningitis in Mice.

Although naturally Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (SS2) causes meningitis resulting in death or sequela of neurological symptoms in pigs and humans, severely threatening public health in the world, it has been difficult to build up and confirm experimental meningitis mouse models with obvious neurological syndrome for about two decades, which strongly hampers the in-depth study on the control measures and mechanisms of SS2-induced meningitis. In this study, a typical meningitis mouse model of SS2 was successfully established, as confirmed by the behavioral indicators of balance beam test, suspe

Engineering lauric acid-based nanodrug delivery systems for restoring chemosensitivity and improving biocompatibility of 5-FU and OxPt against Fn-associated colorectal tumor.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) occurs in the colorectum and ranks second in the global incidence of all cancers, accounting for one of the highest mortalities. Although the combination chemotherapy regimen of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and platinum(IV) oxaliplatin prodrug (OxPt) is an effective strategy for CRC treatment in clinical practice, chemotherapy resistance caused by tumor-resided Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) could result in treatment failure. To enhance the efficacy and improve the biocompatibility of combination chemotherapy, we developed an antibacterial-based nanodrug delivery system for Fn-a
