Law enforcement fentanyl seizures and overdose mortality in US counties, 2013-2020.

BACKGROUND: The spread of illicitly manufactured fentanyl is driving steep increases in US overdose deaths. Fentanyl seizures are correlated with state-level opioid-related mortality; however, more granular seizure surveillance information has the potential to better inform overdose prevention and harm reduction efforts. METHODS: Using data on fentanyl pill and powder seizures from High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA), we tested associations between seizure prevalence and overdose mortality, from 2013 to 2020. The primary exposure-seizure burden-was constructed by identifying countie

Stress Control for Military, Law Enforcement, and First Responders: A Systematic Review.

Military personnel, police officers, firefighters, and other first responders must prepare for and respond to life-threatening crises on a daily basis. This lifestyle places stress on personnel, and particularly so on military personnel who may be isolated from support systems and other resources. The authors conducted a systematic review of studies of interventions designed to prevent, identify, and manage acute occupational stress among military, law enforcement, and first responders. The body of evidence consisted of 38 controlled trials, 35 cohort comparisons, and 42 case studies with no c

Primed for death: Law enforcement-citizen homicides, social media, and retaliatory violence.

We examine whether retaliatory violence exists between law enforcement and citizens while controlling for any social media contagion effect related to prior fatal encounters. Analyzed using a trivariate dynamic structural vector-autoregressive model, daily time-series data over a 21-month period captured the frequencies of police killed in the line of duty, police deadly use of force incidents, and social media coverage. The results support a significant retaliatory violence effect against minorities by police, yet there is no evidence of retaliatory violence against law enforcement officers b

Fatal Injuries of Law Enforcement/Correctional Officers Attacked with Sharp-Edged Weapons.

According to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, there were 117 law enforcement fatalities in the United States in 2015. Assaults with sharp-edged weapons have resulted in a total of over 400 fatalities in the United States. The goal of the current research was to examine sharp-edged weapon assaults against law enforcement and correctional agents that resulted in a fatal outcome. A total of twelve autopsy reports were reviewed from across the United States. Four cases involved law enforcement officers, seven involved correctional officers, and one was an off-duty border officer. The ma

Psychological and physical benefits of circuit weight training in law enforcement personnel.

The effects of circuit weight training on mood, perceived stress, job satisfaction, and physical symptoms were investigated in a sample of state law enforcement officers. Forty-three male officers who were not regularly exercising were assigned to either 4 months of circuit weight training or a wait-list control condition. Four months of circuit weight training led to a significant increase in strength on cardiovascular fitness. Subjects also demonstrated significant improvements in mood, including decreases in somatization, anxiety, depression, and hostility. Circuit weight training also resu

Challenges in implementing school-based drug prevention programs led by law enforcement officers.

School-based prevention drug programs in the United States and Brazil are most commonly delivered by law enforcement officers (LEOs). However, limited research has explored challenges involved in the delivery of these interventions specifically related to their implementation by LEOs. We aim to describe the challenges affecting the implementation of school-based drug prevention programs delivered by LEOs. We conducted a qualitative study using 31 semi-structured interviews with LEOs who delivered the Brazilian version of the DARE-Keepin' it REAL program (fifth- and seventh-grade curriculum) an

Characterizing Head Acceleration Events in Law Enforcement Cadets During Subject Control Technique Training.

Law enforcement cadets (LECs) complete weeks of subject control technique training. Similar sport-related combat training has been shown to expose participants to head acceleration events (HAEs) that have potential to result in short- and long-term impairments. The purpose of this study was to describe the number and magnitude of HAEs in LECs throughout their training. 37 LECs (7 females; age = 30.6 ± 8.8 years; BMI = 30.0 ± 6.0) were recruited from a law enforcement organization. Participants wore instrumented mouthguards, which recorded all HAEs exceeding a resultant 5 g threshold for traini

Does body size impact muscle recruitment during law enforcement physical control simulator use?

This study examined muscle activation during the 'push-pull' component of law enforcement physical abilities testing and assessed activation differences based on sex, height, and body mass index. Fifty participants (40 male) completed the 'push-pull' task while surface electromyograms were recorded from ten upper and lower extremity muscles, and six trunk muscles. Muscle activation was amplitude-normalized to maximum voluntary isometric contraction and compared between sexes and tertiles of height and body mass index (BMI). Women had significantly higher activation of anterior deltoid and pect

Conducted electrical weapon use by law enforcement: an evaluation of safety and injury.

INTRODUCTION: Controversy persists over the safety of conducted electrical weapons (CEWs), which are increasingly used by law enforcement agencies around the world. The purpose of this study was to examine injury patterns and physiologic conditions after CEW use under real life conditions. METHODS: A retrospective, cohort design was used, examining all CEW uses by one police department during a 6-year period. Data were collected from use-of-force forms and medical records and included conditions surrounding the use of force, medical histories, and data from emergency department evaluations an

Harris-Lingoes MMPI-2 Pd subscales and the assessment of law enforcement candidates.

This study analyzed the performance of 111 male law enforcement applicants on MMPI-2 Harris-Lingoes Psychopathic Deviate (Pd) subscales. Applicants' self-descriptions derived from their scores on these subscales showed greater confidence and resistance to authority and less social alienation and personal unhappiness than the MMPI-2 national normative sample. A multiple regression analysis indicated that Pd2 (Authority Problems) was the best predictor of K-corrected Pd scores for the sample of applicants.

Trends in fentanyl-containing drug samples seized by law enforcement agencies across Canada.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Canada's drug toxicity crisis has been largely attributed to a volatile fentanyl-dominated unregulated drug supply with increasing reports of fentanyl detected in combination with benzodiazepines, stimulants and xylazine. Although rates of opioid-related harms vary significantly by region, it remains unknown how the composition of the unregulated drug supply differs across Canada. Therefore, we sought to describe trends in Canadian fentanyl-containing drug seizures nationally and compare trends by province/territory. DESIGN: Repeated cross-sectional analysis between Febru

Current Clinical Concepts: A Framework for Concussion Management Strategies in Law Enforcement Officers.

Athletic trainers are increasingly used in nontraditional settings, such as in law enforcement, where they can contribute to healthcare management, including concussion management of law enforcement officers (LEOs). Despite the prevalence of concussions among LEOs, there is a notable gap in concussion management guidelines for this population. LEOs may lack the education and resources necessary for concussion recognition and proper management. Drawing on advancements in concussion management in athletes and military personnel, here, we present a comprehensive framework for concussion managemen

Animal hoarding: The challenge for mental health, law enforcement, and animal welfare professionals.

Animal hoarding has been considered a significant problem by animal welfare and law enforcement professionals for over a century. However, it has only been recognized as an indication of a mental disorder in the last decade. I review the different forms that animal hoarding can take and the current understanding of the prevalence, demographics and possible etiology of this disorder. Conventional animal cruelty laws have often been inadequate to respond to animal hoarding cases until they reach levels that may involve serious harm to animals and people. I document how prosecution of such cases

Policing the drunk driver: measuring law enforcement involvement in reducing alcohol-impaired driving.

INTRODUCTION: With many thousands of deaths still annually attributable to driving under the influence (DUI), it remains imperative that we continually address the problem of producing and sustaining effective countermeasures, and that we subject these efforts to empirical scrutiny. This article presents relevant findings from state-wide datasets. RESULTS: A formula generating a potentially useful metric for assessing aspects of the DUI prosecutorial chain is presented, focusing on the rate of proactive DUI arrests. While in need of cautious interpretation due to issues of inherent inaccuraci
