The Diversity Bonus: Learning From Dissimilar Clients in Personalized Federated Learning.

Personalized federated learning (PFL) allows clients to collaboratively train their personalized models to handle situations where data from different clients are not independent and identically distributed (non-IID). Previous PFL research implicitly assumes that clients benefit most from those with similar data distributions. Correspondingly, methods such as personalized weight aggregation assign higher weights to similar clients during aggregation. We pose a question: can a client benefit from other clients with dissimilar data distributions, and if so, how? This question is particularly rel

Employing deep learning and transfer learning for accurate brain tumor detection.

Artificial intelligence-powered deep learning methods are being used to diagnose brain tumors with high accuracy, owing to their ability to process large amounts of data. Magnetic resonance imaging stands as the gold standard for brain tumor diagnosis using machine vision, surpassing computed tomography, ultrasound, and X-ray imaging in its effectiveness. Despite this, brain tumor diagnosis remains a challenging endeavour due to the intricate structure of the brain. This study delves into the potential of deep transfer learning architectures to elevate the accuracy of brain tumor diagnosis. Tr

Distance Learning During COVID-19 Mitigates Learning Loss for Interprofessional Education.

On-site interprofessional education (IPE) simulation is primarily used to teach students teamwork, communication, and crisis resource management. Participants view it as an educational environment in which to acquire and consolidate skills. Virtual IPE simulation is traditionally seen as an opportunity to supplement, complement, and reinforce on-site IPE (OI). We used VI as the sole simulation method during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide IPE because of constraints of social distancing. The VI resulted in substantially achieving similar learning outcomes to OI. This suggests that VI, which ha

StoryAid: Nursing Students' Relational Learning for Adolescents With Intellectual Learning Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Nursing students express fears and anxieties about caring for people with intellectual learning disabilities (ILDs). Educational storytelling interventions may help overcome these concerns and improve nursing care. METHOD: StoryAid was used and developed in the Heritage-2Health (H2H) Virtual Art and Drama Project. Eight online sessions followed a story about differences and connections. Two trained facilitators and three academic educators supported nursing students (n = 15), adolescents with ILDs (n = 7), their parents (n = 7), and a specialist teacher to deconstruct, reconnect,

Review on Epileptic Seizure Prediction: Machine Learning and Deep Learning Approaches.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Epileptic seizures occur due to brain abnormalities that can indirectly affect patient's health. It occurs abruptly without any symptoms and thus increases the mortality rate of humans. Almost 1% of world's population suffers from epileptic seizures. Prediction of seizures before the beginning of onset is beneficial for preventing seizures by medication. Nowadays, modern computational tools, machine learning, and deep learning methods have been used to predict seizures using EEG. However, EEG signals may get corrupted with background noise, and artifacts such as eye blinks and physical movemen

Hybrid Deep-Learning and Machine-Learning Models for Predicting COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on public life and health worldwide, putting the world's healthcare systems at risk. The first step in stopping this outbreak is to detect the infection in its early stages, which will relieve the risk, control the outbreak's spread, and restore full functionality to the world's healthcare systems. Currently, PCR is the most prevalent diagnosis tool for COVID-19. However, chest X-ray images may play an essential role in detecting this disease, as they are successful for many other viral pneumonia diseases. Unfortunately, there are common featu

Modeling of H2S solubility in ionic liquids: comparison of white-box machine learning, deep learning and ensemble learning approaches.

In the context of gas processing and carbon sequestration, an adequate understanding of the solubility of acid gases in ionic liquids (ILs) under various thermodynamic circumstances is crucial. A poisonous, combustible, and acidic gas that can cause environmental damage is hydrogen sulfide (H2S). ILs are good choices for appropriate solvents in gas separation procedures. In this work, a variety of machine learning techniques, such as white-box machine learning, deep learning, and ensemble learning, were established to determine the solubility of H2S in ILs. The white-box models are group metho

Developing an Explainable Machine Learning-Based Personalised Dementia Risk Prediction Model: A Transfer Learning Approach With Ensemble Learning Algorithms.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) has its onset many decades before dementia develops, and work is ongoing to characterise individuals at risk of decline on the basis of early detection through biomarker and cognitive testing as well as the presence/absence of identified risk factors. Risk prediction models for AD based on various computational approaches, including machine learning, are being developed with promising results. However, these approaches have been criticised as they are unable to generalise due to over-reliance on one data source, poor internal and external validations, and lack of under

What type of relationship is learned during visual statistical learning?

Statistical learning enables observers to extract regularities from their environment, but what statistical regularity is extracted remains debated. While previous research has mainly focused on conditional probability, recent evidence suggests that observers may instead learn the uniqueness of predictive relationships. In two visual statistical learning experiments, we manipulated the strength and uniqueness of associations between two object stimuli. We contrasted the predictions of three metrics of associative strength, which incorporate the strength and uniqueness of the association differ

Learn From Examples: In-Context Learning for Camouflaged Object Detection.

Recently, new paradigms of camouflaged object detection (COD), such as referring COD (Ref-COD) and collaborative COD (Co-COD), have been proposed to enhance task performance. However, there remains a lack of in-depth exploration of how to utilize reference information more effectively. In this paper, we introduce in-context learning camouflaged object detection (ICL-COD) as a novel paradigm of COD, which leverages camouflaged image samples and their corresponding annotations as visual examples to guide the model in better perceiving camouflage and recognizing camouflaged objects. We propose th

Memory for incidentally learned categories evolves in the post-learning interval.

Humans generate categories from complex regularities evolving across even imperfect sensory input. Here, we examined the possibility that incidental experiences can generate lasting category knowledge. Adults practiced a simple visuomotor task not dependent on acoustic input. Novel categories of acoustically complex sounds were not necessary for task success but aligned incidentally with distinct visuomotor responses in the task. Incidental sound category learning emerged robustly when within-category sound exemplar variability was closely yoked to visuomotor task demands and was not apparent

[Promoting instead of controlling health--lessons learned, lessons to learn].

Health promotion, as laid down in the Ottawa Charta by the World Health Organisation, embraces the call for self-responsibility. Self-responsibility, however, is not merely directed towards apparently personal risk factors. The Ottawa Charta clearly puts health in a wider societal context and follows the line of early social medicine, which, as Virchow put it, understood politics as medicine on a large scale. With the increasing dominance of neoliberal thinking during the 1990s, this view of health in its societal context was pushed aside to make way for an individualistic understanding of sel

[The application of machine learning in the auxiliary diagnosis of specific learning disorder].

Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in children that significantly affects academic performance and quality of life. At present, diagnosis mainly relies on standardized tests and professional evaluations, a process that is complex and time-consuming. Multiple studies have shown that machine learning can analyze diverse data, including test scores, handwriting samples, eye movement data, neuroimaging data, and genetic data, to automatically learn the relationships between input features and output labels and achieve efficient prediction. It shows great poten

The learning curve in learning the curve: a review of Nuss procedure in teenagers.

BACKGROUND: The Nuss procedure is a new minimally invasive repair for pectus excavatum that was first published in 1998. Modifications in technique are constantly evolving to minimize complications, especially bar displacement, which are higher in adolescents and adults. The present study reviews our early experience with this procedure in a much older group of children than previously reported and suggests an alternative method of avoiding bar displacement. METHODS: Retrospective chart review was carried out on 78 consecutive patients who underwent the Nuss procedure between December 1999 an

The concentration of isoflurane required to suppress learning depends on the type of learning.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports suggest that one type of learning, fear conditioning to context, requires more neural processing than a related type, fear conditioning to tone. To determine whether these types of learning were differentially affected by anesthesia, the authors applied isoflurane during the training phases of fear conditioning paradigms for freezing to context and freezing to tone. METHODS: The authors trained seven groups of eight rats to fear tone by administering a tone (conditioned stimulus) while breathing various concentrations of isoflurane from 0.00 to 0.75 minimum alveolar

Function of color in learning an assembly task by learning disabled adolescents.

This study examined the effect of color on responses by 20 14- to 17-yr-old learning disabled students in a probation facility to a puzzle assembly task. Prior to the task, one of two randomly constituted groups of 10 viewed a black and white film illustrating a puzzle assembly, the other group viewed an identical film of the puzzle being assembled in color. Analysis indicated that color does not enhance performance in some cases and may inhibit performance.

From self-regulated learning to learning outcomes in virtual learning environments: motivational activation and flow as a sequential psychological pathway.

INTRODUCTION: Virtual learning environments have become an important context for higher education, yet the psychological mechanisms through which students achieve positive learning outcomes remain insufficiently understood. Informed by self-determination theory and flow theory, this study examined a sequential psychological pathway linking self-regulated learning to learning engagement and learning satisfaction through intrinsic motivation and flow experience. By integrating self-regulatory, motivational, and experiential processes within a single model, this study moves beyond research that h

Improving the accessibility of deep learning-based denoising for accelerated brain MRI using self-supervised learning and/or transfer learning.

The quality of human brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is often compromised by noise. Deep learning-based image denoising methods using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have proven to be more effective compared to conventional denoising methods. Nonetheless, most CNN-based denoising methods are not accessible in practice because they require high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) reference data acquired on many subjects for supervising the training of CNNs and may be further hampered by long training time and lack of access to adequate computing resources. This study seeks to address these
