This study discusses the purification of soluble beta-galactose lectins obtained from the lizard liver of Sceloporus spinosus. The first lectin named lizard hepatic lectin-1 (LHL-1) presented a molecular weight of 31,750, with an isoelectric point of 4.25. The highest specific hemagglutinating activity was achieved using human blood type A1: N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc)-galactose (Gal)-fucose (Fuc). Binding of FITC conjugated lectins to mucin in benign and malignant colon lesions was studied by fluorescence microscopy. In 145 cases of colonic adenocarcinoma, PNA (peanut agglutinin) was found to be bound to 75% of cases, while DBA (dolichos biflorus agglutinin) to 13% only. Lectin histochemistry was used to compare normal endometrial and endocervical epithelium with adenocarcinomas arising in these locations. Mannan-binding lectin (MBL) was first discovered as a plasma opsonin for baker's yeast and was independently characterized biochemically.
