Erythroleukemia in two cats naturally infected with feline leukemia virus in the same household.

Erythroleukemia was observed in two unrelated cats infected with feline leukemia virus (FeLV) from the same household. Case 1, a 1-year-old neutered male cat developed erythroleukemia (M6) after a diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS-Er) on the criteria of FAB classification of acute leukemias. Case 2, a 1-year-old neutered female cat, which had close contact with Case 1, also developed erythroleukemia (M6Er). In both cases, marked proliferation of erythroid progenitor cells with disproportionally large numbers of immature forms was observed in the bone marrow. In Case 1, neoplastic prol

A novel truncated env gene isolated from a feline leukemia virus-induced thymic lymphosarcoma.

We PCR amplified the exogenous feline leukemia virus (FeLV)-related env gene species from lymphosarcomas induced by intradermally administered plasmid DNA of either the prototype FeLV, subgroup A molecular clone, F6A, or a new molecular clone, FeLV-A, Rickard strain (FRA). Of the nine tumors examined, six showed the presence of deleted env species of variable sizes in the tumor DNA. One env mutant, which was detected in a FRA-induced thymic lymphosarcoma, had a large internal deletion beginning from almost the N-terminal surface glycoprotein (SU) up to the middle region of the transmembrane (T

Differential pathogenicity of two feline leukemia virus subgroup A molecular clones, pFRA and pF6A.

F6A, a molecular clone of subgroup A feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is considered to be highly infectious but weakly pathogenic. In recent studies with a closely related subgroup A molecular clone, FRA, we demonstrated high pathogenicity and a strong propensity to undergo recombination with endogenous FeLV (enFeLV), leading to a high frequency of transition from subgroup A to A/B. The present study was undertaken to identify mechanisms of FeLV pathogenesis that might become evident by comparing the two closely related molecular clones. F6A was shown to have an infectivity similar to that of FRA

Evolutionary Dynamics of Endogenous Feline Leukemia Virus in the Felis Genus Through the Lens of Genomics.

Feline leukemia virus (Gammaretrovirus felleu) causes variable pathologies, partially modulated by its endogenous form (enFeLV). Although enFeLV is found in genomes of all species of the Felis genus, the limitations of transposable element sequencing have hindered a comprehensive characterization. In this study, we examined 17 felid genomes for enFeLV copies, confirming that enFeLV is restricted to the Felis genus. From the long-read genomes of Felis catus, Felis nigripes, and Felis chaus, we identified 73 solo LTRs, 64 copies with genic segments, and 4 atypical copies. These were annotated an

Does a feline leukemia virus infection pave the way for Bartonella henselae infection in cats?

Domestic cats serve as the reservoir hosts of Bartonella henselae and may develop mild clinical symptoms or none after experimental infection. In humans, B. henselae infection can result in self-limiting cat scratch disease. However, immunocompromised patients may suffer from more-severe courses of infection or may even develop the potentially lethal disease bacillary angiomatosis. It was reasoned that cats with immunocompromising viral infections may react similarly to B. henselae infection. The aim of our study was to investigate the influence of the most important viruses known to cause imm

Feline leukemia virus-induced immunodeficiency syndrome in cats as a model for evaluation of antiretroviral therapy.

Severe progressive immunodeficiency syndrome can be induced experimentally with a molecularly cloned isolate of feline leukemia virus (FeLV-FAIDS). The resultant disease syndrome is characterized by persistent viremia, lymphopenia, progressive weight loss, persistent diarrhea, enteropathy, and opportunistic infections. The onset of clinical immunodeficiency disease is prefigured by the replication of the FeLV-FAIDS variant virus in bone marrow and other tissues. The FeLV-FAIDS system can be used to evaluate antiviral agents which act on steps in the replication cycle which are conserved among

Tumorigenic potential of a myc-containing strain of feline leukemia virus in vivo in domestic cats.

The oncogenic capacity of a myc-containing strain of feline leukemia virus (FeLV), termed LC-FeLV, has been examined after inoculation of the virus into neonatal kittens. Like other myc-containing strains of FeLV, LC-FeLV may induce with relatively short latency, but does not necessarily induce, thymic lymphosarcoma in viremic animals. Naturally occurring and experimentally induced tumors are T-cell lymphomas which contain clonally integrated LC-FeLV proviral DNA and which cannot readily be cultivated in vitro in the presence or absence of exogenously supplied interleukin-2. Acquisition of myc

Pathological characterization of lymphomas with involvement of the alimentary tract in feline leukemia virus-infected cats.

Lymphoma is a common neoplasm in cats, in which alimentary lymphoma is a common subtype, and it is usually diagnosed in elderly, feline leukemia virus (FeLV)-negative cats. This study aimed to describe the pathological features of lymphoma with involvement of the alimentary tract in FeLV-antigen-positive cats. In a 12-year retrospective study, 32 necropsied and FeLV-infected cats with lymphoma affecting the alimentary tract were identified. Twenty-one cases were multicentric lymphomas with secondary involvement of the alimentary tract, and the remaining 11 cats were considered to have primary

No benefit of therapeutic vaccination in clinically healthy cats persistently infected with feline leukemia virus.

Therapeutic vaccinations have a potential application in infections where no curative treatment is available. In contrast to HIV, efficacious vaccines for a cat retrovirus, feline leukemia virus (FeLV), are commercially available. However, the infection is still prevalent, and no effective treatment of the infection is known. By vaccinating persistently FeLV-infected cats and presenting FeLV antigens to the immune system of the host, e.g., in the form of recombinant and/or adjuvanted antigens, we intended to shift the balance toward an advantage of the host so that persistent infection could b

Fatal Feline Leukemia Virus-Associated Enteritis in a Wild Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx) in Germany.

The Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), a widespread wild felid on the Eurasian continent, is currently classified as "critically endangered" in Germany. Understanding the impact of infectious agents is of particular importance for the continued conservation of these animals, especially regarding pathogens with broad host ranges and risk of interspecies transmission. Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is known to infect wild and domestic felids worldwide, including several species of lynx, but it has not been reported thus far in the Eurasian lynx. In September 2020, a 16-month-old female Eurasian lynx from

High prevalence and risk factors of feline leukemia virus infection in Chilean urban cats (Felis catus).

Feline Leukemia Virus is a retrovirus causing fatal disease in domestic cats. While FeLV has been controlled in many countries, it remains a major concern in Latin American countries. This study conducted an epidemiological survey of FeLV in 182 Chilean domestic cats using PCR to detect provirus infection. The results were analysed using Multivariate Logistic Regression to examine risk factors associated with FeLV detection. The FeLV prevalence was 54.95 %, and statistically significant associations (p < 0.05) were found for two protective factors and one risk factor. Cats from Concepcion city

Multicentric T-cell lymphoma associated with feline leukemia virus infection in a captive namibian cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus).

This case report describes a multicentric lymphoma in a 4 yr old female wildborn captive cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) in Namibia after being housed in an enclosure adjacent to a feline leukemia virus (FeLV) infected cheetah that had previously been in contact with domestic cats. The year prior to the onset of clinical signs, the wild-born cheetah was FeLV antigen negative. The cheetah subsequently developed lymphoma, was found to be infected with FeLV, and then rapidly deteriorated and died. At necropsy, the liver, spleen, lymph nodes, and multiple other organs were extensively infiltrated with
