OBJECTIVE: A case of Leydig cell tumor in a cryptorchid testis is described.
METHODS: A 55-year-old man presented with no specific scrotal symptoms. A cryptorchid testis was discovered on physical examination and the patient was submitted to orchidectomy.
RESULTS: A solid, well-circumscribed, round nodule of 0.8 cm in diameter was found in an atrophic testis. The histological examination showed a Leydig cell tumor with crystals of Reinke and immunostaining with vimentin.
CONCLUSION: Leydig cell tumor may be related with cryptorchidism.

A 63-year-old male visited our hospital with a complaint of painless swelling of the left scrotum. Left high orchiectomy was performed since ultrasonography suggested a testicular tumor. Histologically, this testicular mass was a Leydig cell tumor. We reviewed 47 cases of this tumor previously reported in Japan.

A patient with a testicular interstitial cell tumor and gynecomastia is reported. The testicular tumor was capable of aromatizing 8.3% testosterone. Spermatic venous samples taken from the tumor-bearing side had marked elevations of 17 beta-estradiol (E2), progesterone, and 17-hydroxyprogesterone (170 HP). The progesterone to 17OHP and 17OHP to androstene-dione ratios suggested an enzymatic block of 17 alpha-hydroxylase and 17-20 lyase possibly secondary to locally produced E2. The E2 produced by the tumor appeared to suppress gonadotropin secretion. The plasma testosterone and gonadotropin le

BACKGROUND: Leydig cell tumors are the most common non-germ cell gonadal tumors with apparent increased incidence in the last few years. They are usually benign tumors. We report a case of Leydig cell tumor of testis in a patient presenting atypical features.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old Caucasian man, born with right cryptorchidism, corrected without medical treatment before the age of two years, was diagnosed with Leydig cell tumor. Two years after diagnosis was identified moderately elevated estradiol serum level, in the context of a significant overweight, hormonal changes which had m

A case of Leydig cell virilizing tumor of the ovary in a 68 year old woman, with clinical signs of virilization, clitoromegaly and androgenic alopecia is described. An RMN of encephalon and an abdominal ultrasound were normal. Following total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, the patient had regression of hirsutism, and plasma testosterone dropped to normal level.

The hormonal profile of estrogen-secreting Leydig cell tumors was studied in four patients. Plasma testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2) levels varied from day-to-day whereas the T/E2 ratios were decreased (22:85, normal 170 to 440). hCG administration induced a higher estrogen response in the patients than in normal men. The finding in the spermatic venous blood of the tumor-bearing testis of a particular biochemical profile, including a low T/E2 ratio (12:27), associated with high progesterone/17-hydroxyprogesterone ratios (0.13:0.26) and high 17-hydroxyprogesterone-androstenedione ratios (26:

The ultrastructure of a feminizing testicular Leydig cell tumor was analytically compared with that of the five reported feminizing neoplasms and with that of the eight published masculinizing or hormonally inactive tumors. Certain observations were noteworthy but of uncertain significance. In the current case, nuclear outlines tended to be irregular, nuclear pores were relatively few, chromatin was often uniformly dispersed, and nucleoli were frequently multiple. Membranous whorls and "myelin figures" were common. Collectively, the nuclear aberrations were noted only in the two feminizing neo

Leydig cell ovarian tumors constitute not only a medical problem for clinicians but also a social problem - which is why women with symptoms of hirsutism relatively quickly contact physicians for medical consultation. Leydig cell ovarian tumor is a rare sex cord-gonadal stromal tumor which constitutes less than 0.5% of ovarian tumors. These cancers appear at all ages but the majority of the cases concern women in the perimenopause. In the majority of cases (70-85%), the growth is accompanied by androgen secretion, together with virilization and hirsutism. The presence of hormonally active ovar

Our report details the workup and management of a 43-year-old woman with an identical twin who presented with 2 years of virilization and secondary amenorrhea. Serum total testosterone was elevated. An MRI did not identify adnexal or adrenal pathology. Subsequent ovarian vein sampling demonstrated unilateral testosterone elevation. The patient underwent laparoscopic unilateral oophorectomy resulting in the diagnosis of Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor (SLCT). Although SLCT is a rare sex-cord ovarian tumor, it is associated with endometrial hyperplasia and malignancy. Our goals are to review the worku

Leydig cell tumors (LCTs) are rare cord-stromal tumors that may occur in testis or ovaries and may produce androgens or estrogens. The majority has been found in men between the ages of 20 and 60 years. Adults with androgen-secreting LCTs are usually asymptomatic; feminizing syndromes may result from the production of estradiol or the peripheral aromatization of testosterone. In children, LCTs usually present between 5 and 10 years of age with isosexual precocious pseudopuberty or gynecomastia. We report 2 cases of LCT in prepubertal boys presenting with advanced unilateral pubarche and testic

BACKGROUND: The complete androgen insensitivity (testicular feminization) syndrome was described in phenotypic females with 46XY karyotype, presenting with primary amenorrhea, adequate breast development, and absent or sparse pubic or axillary hair. Gonads consist usually of seminiferous tubules without spermatogenesis.
CASE: We report the case of a 15-year-old girl with testicular feminization since age 4. She was admitted to surgically remove the testes from the inguinal canal. Microscopic examination of the left testis revealed a Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor and the draft of fallopian tube wi

Testicular Leydig cell tumours are uncommon. Bilateral synchronous lesions are exceptional. They cause isosexual pseudo precocious puberty in childhood. The histological diagnosis of malignancy is sometimes difficult to establish and it can be made retrospectively when lymph nodes involvement or visceral metastasis appear in the follow-up. We report a case of a 9 year-old boy presenting bilateral Leydig cell tumour of the testis treated by bilateral radical orchiectomy who developed 2 years after the intervention a pulmonary metastasis.

Leydig cell tumors are the primary nongerm cell tumors of the testis, comprising approximately 1 to 3% of all testicular neoplasms. These tumors are bilateral in 5 to 10% of cases. Hypoechoic testicular nodule associated to a child virilising syndrome or adult gynecomastia with negative testis tumor markers (AFP, B-HCG) show a high index suspicion for this entity. We report a case of metachronous contralateral Leydig cell tumor in a 32 years old man with a 9 year interval between presentations, in which we performed local excision of the lesion. Diagnostic an therapeutic aspects are reviewed i

INTRODUCTION: Leydig cell tumors (LCTs), constituting 1%-3% of testicular tumors, are mostly benign, but malignant cases present treatment challenges. We report a malignant LCT case with a notable response to mitotane.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old male presented with a right testicular induration and was diagnosed with a Leydig cell tumor following orchiectomy. BEP chemotherapy was initiated for the liver metastases, but after four cycles, new lymph node and bone lesions appeared. Mitotane was started, which markedly reduced liver and nodal metastases. However, due to fatigue, anorexia, a

Leydig cell tumors (LCTs) are rare testicular tumors that may be a cause of precocious puberty in males. We present a 5-year-old boy with a five-month history of pubic hair appearance associated with an increase in penile length, scrotal hyperpigmentation, change in body odor, and bone age advanced by two years. His hormonal tests revealed the diagnosis of pseudo precocious puberty. Testicular ultrasound showed a unilateral right testicular enlargement. Surgery was performed to remove the mass. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of LCT. This case report highlights the importance of conside

As ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors are extremely rare, it appears worthwhile to report cases with uncommon clinical and/or laboratory findings. A 37-year-old nulligravida female was referred because of secondary amenorrhea and hirsutism for 11 years. She appeared virilized with a male body habitus. The highest plasma testosterone (T) level was 1,070 ng/dl. A laparotomy with salpingo-oophorectomy was performed and the pathological report confirmed the presence of Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor of intermediate differentiation. Ovarian venous T value was 5,690 ng/dl. The patient was alive and well
