Indoor moisture and mold-related health problems.

Moisture, microbial and in particular mold related indoor exposure and health problems in homes, offices, and public buildings (Kindergartens, schools, library, and hospitals) have been gaining recognition as one of the most common indoor environmental health issues. Proper recognition of microbial related health problems and the differential diagnosis of sick building syndrome (SBS) or building related illness (BRI) are important for early and effective exposure intervention, treatment, referral and prevention of more serious illness.

Functional Metagenome Mining of Soil for a Novel Gentamicin Resistance Gene.

Extensive use of antibiotics over recent decades has led to bacterial resistance against antibiotics, including gentamicin, one of the most effective aminoglycosides. The emergence of resistance is problematic for hospitals, since gentamicin is an important broad-spectrum antibiotic for the control of bacterial pathogens in the clinic. Previous study to identify gentamicin resistance genes from environmental samples have been conducted using culture-dependent screening methods. To overcome these limitations, we employed a metagenome-based culture-independent protocol to identify gentamicin res

Giant Pyelocaliceal Transitional Cell Carcinoma Associated with Neglected Pelvic Lithiasis: Case Presentation and Review of the Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Urinary lithiasis is one of the most common diseases in Western countries. Although there is evidence that kidney stones may be related to upper urinary tract tumors, the mechanisms that link the origin of urinary stones to the development of these tumors remain largely unclear. In this article, we present a rare case of a giant tumor of the renal pelvis associated with chronic lithiasis and discuss the association between these two conditions. CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of a high fever, pain in the left flank, and gross haematuri

Comparative study of bacterial flora in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of pneumonia patients based on their pneumonia subtypes and comorbidities using 16S ribosomal RNA gene analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The culture method is the gold standard for identifying pathogenic bacteria in patients with pneumonia but often does not reflect the exact bacterial flora in pulmonary lesions of pneumonia, partly owing to easiness or difficulties in culturing certain bacterial species. We aimed to evaluate bacterial flora in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples directly obtained from pneumonia lesions using 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene analysis to compare the results of the BALF culture method in each category of pneumonia. METHODS: Bacterial florae were detected by a combination of th

Computerized predictive models in hospital settings for detecting severe maternal complications: a systematic review protocol.

CONTEXT: Maternal mortality remains a public health problem, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Complications such as hypertension, gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage, and infections are among the main causes of preventable deaths. In this scenario, computerized predictive models have emerged as tools for the early identification of risks and the prevention of serious complications associated with maternal death in hospital care. Therefore, this systematic review is designed to assess the available evidence on the effectiveness of these models when applied

Antibiotics in early life associate with specific gut microbiota signatures in a prospective longitudinal infant cohort.

BACKGROUND: The effects of antibiotics on infant gut microbiota are unclear. We hypothesized that the use of common antibiotics results in long-term aberration in gut microbiota. METHODS: Antibiotic-naive infants were prospectively recruited when hospitalized because of a respiratory syncytial virus infection. Composition of fecal microbiota was compared between those receiving antibiotics during follow-up (prescribed at clinicians' discretion because of complications such as otitis media) and those with no antibiotic exposure. Fecal sampling started on day 1, then continued at 2-day interval
