Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Subsequent Risks of Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases: the Life Course Perspective and Implications of Racial Disparities.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common pregnancy complications worldwide and the prevalence is continuously rising globally. Importantly, GDM is not an isolated complication of pregnancy. Growing evidence suggests that individuals with GDM, compared to those without GDM, have an increased risk of subsequent type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Substantial racial and ethnic disparities exist in the risk of GDM. However, the role of race and ethnicity in the progression from GDM to T2D and CVD remains unclear. The purpose of the curre

A life course perspective of victimization, child welfare involvement, cumulative stress and mental health for mothers on probation and parole.

Women involved in the criminal justice system experience multiple forms of adversity over their lifetimes. These events may include childhood abuse, involvement in the child welfare system as children, intimate partner violence victimization during adulthood, and punitive interactions with the child welfare system as mothers. Community supervision (e.g. probation or parole) entails particular stressors, such as obtaining basic needs and employment. A majority of women under community supervision also experience depression and anxiety. The current study used the Stress Process Model to investig

Do the integrated theories of self-determination and planned behavior explain the change in active life engagement following a motivational counseling intervention among older people?

BACKGROUND: An integrated model based on self-determination and planned behavior theories has been used to explain physical activity and other health-related behaviors mainly among younger populations, not older adults. The present study aimed to conduct a secondary analysis to explore whether changes in theory-based constructs explain a change in activity level (including 17 activities in essential life areas) among 75- and 80-year-old individuals. METHODS: Data came from the Promoting well-being through active aging (AGNES) study, a two-arm single-blinded randomized control trial, where par

Association Between Changes in Racial Residential and School Segregation and Trends in Racial Health Disparities, 2000-2020: A Life Course Perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Most studies of the relationship between racial segregation and racial health disparities have focused on residential segregation. School-based racial segregation is an additional form of segregation that may be associated with racial disparities in health. This study examines the relationship between both residential segregation and school segregation and racial health disparities among non-Hispanic Black compared to non-Hispanic White persons at the county level in the United States. It also examines the relationship between changes in residential and school segregation and sub

Impaired Respiratory Health and Life Course Transitions From Health to Chronic Lung Disease.

Primary prevention and interception of chronic lung disease are essential in the effort to reduce the morbidity and mortality caused by respiratory conditions. In this review, we apply a life course approach that examines exposures across the life span to identify risk factors that are associated with not only chronic lung disease but also an intermediate phenotype between ideal lung health and lung disease, termed "impaired respiratory health." Notably, risk factors such as exposure to tobacco smoke and air pollution, as well as obesity and physical fitness, affect respiratory health across t

Effects of an mHealth Intervention for Pulmonary Tuberculosis Self-management Based on the Integrated Theory of Health Behavior Change: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Improving the health self-management level of patients with tuberculosis (TB) is significant for reducing drug resistance, improving the cure rate, and controlling the prevalence of TB. Mobile health (mHealth) interventions based on behavioral science theories may be promising to achieve this goal. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore and conduct an mHealth intervention based on the Integrated Theory of Health Behavior Change (ITHBC) in patients with pulmonary TB to increase their ability of self-care management. METHODS: A prospective randomized controlled study was conducted f

A life course perspective on Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome: women's experiences and negotiations of living with an underdeveloped uterus and vagina.

PURPOSE: Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome is characterized by the absence or underdevelopment of the uterus and upper part of the vagina. It is usually diagnosed during adolescence, and the present study investigates how women experience and negotiate to live with MRKH syndrome long-term. METHODS: From January to March 2021, eighteen Danish women with MRKH syndrome participated in semi-structured interviews via video conference. The mean time since diagnosis was 11.5 years. A thematic analysis using the life course framework as a theoretical approach was applied. RESULTS: The a

A pathway analysis of the impact of childhood domestic violence on depression in middle-aged and elderly people from the perspective of life course.

BACKGROUND: Negative life events in early life have a cumulative effect on health trajectory changes in middle and old age, and some scholars have used life course theory as a guide to empirically explore the effect of childhood adversity or adverse experiences on depression in the elderly, but few study focuses on violence within the family. OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence mechanism of domestic violence experience on depression in later life in middle-aged and elderly people, and to provide academic support for the whole society to pay attention to good family function and intergeneratio

Male gender preference, female gender disadvantage as risk factors for psychological morbidity in Pakistani women of childbearing age - a life course perspective.

BACKGROUND: In Pakistan, preference for boys over girls is deeply culturally embedded. From birth, many women experience gendered disadvantages; less access to scarce resources, poorer health care, higher child mortality, limited education, less employment outside of the home and circumscribed autonomy. The prevalence of psychological morbidity is exceptionally high among women. We hypothesise that, among women of childbearing age, gender disadvantage is an independent risk factor for psychological morbidity METHODS: A cross-sectional catchment area survey of 525 women aged 18 to 35 years liv

Integrated Theory-Based Health and Development Interventions for Young People: A Global Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Most health and developmental issues affecting young people are interrelated. However, few interventions address multiple behavioral domains simultaneously or are based on theories that encompass a holistic perspective of youth development. AIM: The purpose of this scoping review was to identify and describe the range of theory-based, multibehavioral health interventions aimed at improving two or more of the following behavioral youth outcomes: (1) sexual and reproductive health; (2) education and employment; (3) violence; and (4) substance use. The Association Between Childhood Neighborhood Environment and Depressive Symptoms Among Chinese Rural Older Adults: A Gender-Moderated Analysis from a Life Course Perspective.

Life course theory links early-life experiences to late-life depression, yet research on childhood neighborhood effects among rural older adults-especially gendered differences-remains limited. Analyzing 2014-2018 CHARLS data of 8,034 rural older adults via structural equation modeling, we confirm a significant long-term association between childhood neighborhood environment and depressive symptoms. Multi-group analysis reveals stark gender heterogeneity: the association holds exclusively for rural older women, with no significant effect among men. These findings underscore women's lifelong vu

Personal Versus Group Experiences of Racism and Risk of Delivering a Small-for-Gestational Age Infant in African American Women: a Life Course Perspective.

The majority of studies investigating the relationship between racism/racial discrimination and birth outcomes have focused on perceived experiences of racism/racial discrimination directed at oneself (personal racism). However, evidence suggests individuals report with greater frequency racism/racial discrimination directed at friends, family members, or other members of their racial/ethnic group (group racism). We examined how much African American (AA) women report lifetime experiences of perceived racism or racial discrimination, both personal and group, varied by maternal age. We also inv

When do social inequalities in C-reactive protein start? A life course perspective from conception to adulthood in the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear when in the life course do social inequalities in inflammation emerge. We examined whether the association between socioeconomic position (SEP) and C-reactive protein (CRP) is determined at conception, in childhood, adolescence or adulthood in 1484 participants from the population-based Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study. METHODS: Five variants of the CRP gene were used to investigate whether SEP differences in CRP levels are determined at conception. SEP and serum CRP were assessed in childhood (age 3-9), adolescence (age 12-18) and in adulthood (age 24-39). S

'I was broken in so many different ways': The intersection of complex factors impacting homeless and at-risk African American women's mental health and well-being.

African American women are at higher risk of poor mental ill health compared with other racial and ethnic groups in the United States. For low-income and homeless African American populations, the risk of poor mental ill health is even higher. The purpose of our study was to learn what programmes at a long-term transitional living centre helped at-risk and homeless African American mothers to succeed on their own, in accordance with self-identified goals. We conducted ten focus group interviews with 39 graduates of a long-term transitional living centre located in a Midwestern city, and an ind

Racial/Ethnic Differences in Women's Life Event Exposure Across Midlife.

OBJECTIVE: Stressful life events are associated with poorer physical, cognitive, and mental health. Examining life events trends across midlife illustrates normative experiences of stress in a critical life period for intervention and disease prevention. Further, there is a critical need for research with racially/ethnically diverse samples to identify differences in life event exposure, as they may relate to later health disparities. METHOD: Annual life event reports were analyzed from 3,066 White, Black, Hispanic, Chinese, and Japanese women in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation.
