Life history traits of Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on non-Bt and Bt transgenic corn hybrids in eastern North Carolina.

Transgenic varieties of field corn that express the CrylAb B. thuringiensis (Bt) toxin in ear tissue present the potential of reducing ear feeding by the corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and for reducing the size of populations of the insect infesting other host crops. Life history parameters of H. zea feeding on ears of conventional and Bt field corn varieties were measured in field plots in eastern North Carolina in 1997 and 1998. Transformation events investigated were Mon-810 and Bt-11. Bt corn was found to cause a steady mortality of larvae during development, but p

Exposure to grassland fire ash alters the life-history traits and causes morphological deformities in the aquatic insect Chironomus xanthus.

Wildfires generate large amounts of ash that can contaminate watercourses, with potentially harmful effects on aquatic biodiversity that are not fully understood. This study experimentally evaluated the influence of environmentally relevant concentrations of grassland ash on aquatic biota, using the freshwater non-biting midge Chironomus xanthus as a model organism. Specifically, we assessed the toxicity of ash on oviposition and emergence patterns, changes in body and head capsule sizes, and deformities in the mentum and mandible of 4th-instar larvae and the wings of adult C. xanthus. The tes

No genome-wide correlations and little shared genetic architecture between reproductive life-history traits and estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer risk.

Estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer (ER + BC) is one of the most prevalent cancers, but the evolutionary processes shaping genetic variation in ER + BC risk are poorly understood. Both evolutionary life-history theory and evidence from studies of individual ER + BC risk variants suggest that increased genetic ER + BC risk is associated with faster maturation, earlier reproduction, and/or increased reproductive success (i.e. there is a trade-off), but it is unclear how well this pattern is replicated when considering the polygenic architecture of these traits after controlling for potentia

Impact of mycolactone produced by Mycobacterium ulcerans on life-history traits of Aedes aegypti (L.) and resulting habitat selection for oviposition.

Buruli ulcer (BU) is a globally recognized, yet largely neglected tropical disease whose etiologic agent is Mycobacterium ulcerans. Although the exact mode of transmission is unclear, epidemiological evidence links BU incidence with slow-moving or stagnant, aquatic habitats, and laboratory-based experiments have shown disease manifestation in animals with dermal punctures. Therefore, hypotheses for transmission include contact with slowmoving aquatic habitats and associated biting aquatic insects, such as mosquitoes. Recent research demonstrated the toxin produced by M. ulcerans, mycolactone,

Do osteohistology, microanatomy or life history traits show patterns linked to neotenic lifestyles in extant Caudata and the Permian temnospondyl Apateon?

Neoteny is widespread in extant Caudata and has also been inferred in extinct temnospondyls. Here, we compare osteohistology, microanatomy, and life history traits of the Permian branchiosaurid Apateon spp. with those of modern obligate and facultative neotenic and not neotenic caudates to possibly identify common patterns separating groups. The osteohistology of these modern caudates is studied for the first time based on petrographic ground sections, which yield a better comparability between modern and fossilized bones than microtomized thin sections. We found in all adult individuals' avas

Multigenerational consequences of antidepressant pollution: Effects of sediment-associated sertraline on life-history traits and behaviour in a marine deposit-feeding worm.

Pharmaceutical pollution is escalating worldwide due to increasing drug consumption and limited removal in conventional wastewater treatment plants. While low concentrations of SSRIs can already disrupt endocrine and behavioural functions in aquatic species, the long-term effects of sediment-associated SSRIs remain largely unexplored. In this study, we examined multigenerational effects of sediment-associated sertraline (SER; 0-15.6 μg/g dry weight sediment) on the polychaete Capitella teleta across three generations (f0-f2), assessing reproductive traits in all generations and behaviour only

Spatial variation of life-history traits in Bulinus truncatus, the intermediate host of schistosomes, in the context of field application of niclosamide in Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Control of intermediate host snails using molluscicides for the control and/or elimination of schistosomiasis is a strategy in line with WHO recommendations. Niclosamide is the main chemical molluscicide recommended by WHO. However, except the immediate killing of the snail, the extent of the impact of the molluscicide application on the evolution of snail life-history traits, in relation to recolonization of treated sites is not well known. This study aimed to characterize the spatial variation of life-history traits of populations of the freshwater snail Bulinus truncatus, in rel

A laboratory-adapted and a clinical isolate of dengue virus serotype 4 differently impact Aedes aegypti life-history traits relevant to vectorial capacity.

UNLABELLED: Dengue virus cases are on the rise globally, and strategies to control its primary vector, the mosquito Aedes aegypti, represent a promising approach. However, the interaction between virus serotypes and genotypes with Ae. aegypti is poorly characterized in terms of life-history traits related to vector capacity and mosquito disease tolerance. Here, we infected Ae. aegypti with two phylogenetically distant strains of dengue virus serotype 4 genotype II: a laboratory-adapted strain, DENV4-TVP/360, and a recent clinical strain isolated from southern Brazil, DENV4-LRV 13/422. Effects of child abuse history on borderline personality traits, negative life events, and depression: a study among a university student population in Japan.

To simultaneously examine the impact of childhood abuse history on borderline personality traits, negative life events, and depression, undergraduate students (N=243) were studied by questionnaire surveys with one week intervals. Neglect and emotional abuse as well as sexual maltreatment predicted borderline personality traits and baseline depression. Baseline depression as well as the impact of negative life events occurring the week prior predicted depression a week later. However, after considering the baseline depression level, child abuse history failed to predict the follow-up depression

Consequences of a short-term exposure to a sub lethal concentration of CdO nanoparticles on key life history traits in the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster).

Nanoparticles of cadmium oxide (CdO NPs) are among the most common industrial metal oxide nanoparticles. Early adulthood (P1) fruit flies (D. melanogaster) were exposed for 7 days to a sub lethal concentration (0.03 mg CdO NPs/mL, which was 20% of the LC50), spiked into food media to test whether short episodes of CdO NPs exposures early in adult life have long-lasting effects on life history traits such as fecundity well beyond exposure times. All studied life history traits, as well as climbing behavior were adversely affected by exposure to CdO NPs. A blistered wing phenotype was also obser

Life history trait analysis of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema feltiae provides the basis for prediction of dauer juvenile yields in monoxenic liquid culture.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (Steinernema spp.) are used in integrated pest management to control insect pests in cryptic environments. The nematodes are mass produced in monoxenic liquid culture with their symbiotic bacteria Xenorhabdus spp. For a better understanding of nematode population dynamics, the life history traits (LHTs) of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema feltiae were assessed at 25 °C by observing single pairs of male and female nematodes using a hanging drop technique. To investigate the influence of different food supplies on nematode reproduction, the LHTs were assessed

Exploring the multigenerational effects of Lippia adoensis (Lamiales: Verbenaceae) essential oil and Dichlorvos on Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) life-history traits and gene expression.

The cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), is a major stored-product pest. Resistance to synthetic insecticides such as dichlorvos (DDVP) has prompted interest in alternatives with distinct modes of action. This study compared multigenerational transcriptional responses of C. maculatus to DDVP and the botanical insecticide Lippia adoensis (Hochst. ex Walp.) (Lamiales: Verbenaceae) essential oil (EO). DDVP exposure was associated with progressive fitness recovery across generations, together with upregulated expression of detoxification-related genes (e.g.

Application of the DEB-TKTD model with multi-omics data: Prediction of life history traits of Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) under different salinities.

Saline-alkaline aquaculture plays a crucial role in the ecological restoration of saline soils, yet high water salinity can significantly restrict the growth of cultured organisms. The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is typically farmed in freshwater, to evaluate the effects of salinity stress on these crabs, this study conducted laboratory aquaculture experiments at salinities of ≤ 0.5 (freshwater), 6, 12, and 18 ‰. Regular data on crab survival and growth were collected over 35 days. Subsequently, tissues including the eyestalk, posterior gill, hepatopancreas, and ovary were sampled

Genetic consequences of being a dwarf: do evolutionary changes in life-history traits influence gene flow patterns in populations of the world's smallest goldenrod?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Contrasting life-history traits can evolve through generations of dwarf plant ecotypes, yet such phenotypic changes often involve decreased plant size and reproductive allocation, which can configure seed dispersal patterns and, subsequently, population demography. Therefore, evolutionary transitions to dwarfism can represent good study systems to test the roles of life-history traits in population demography by comparing genetic structure between related but phenotypically divergent ecotypes. METHODS: In this study, we examined an ecotypic taxon pair of the world's small

Overall impacts of bisphenol S (BPS) on the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) in a mesocosm experiment: Relationships between biomarkers, life-history traits, and population-level effects.

Effects of Bisphenol S (BPS), a widespread substitute for Bisphenol A, were investigated on the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) across multiple biological levels and timescales in mesocosms (semi-natural rivers). By comparing short- and long-term exposures, the aim is to identify early predictive biomarkers and establish mechanistic links between sub-organismal and population-level effects of the BPS. This study thereby contributes to the integration of these results into Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) and supports Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA). Two complementary approac

No adverse effects of three size classes of UV-aged and fragmented polyethylene microplastics on life-history traits of two marine teleost fish species in standardized toxicity tests.

Microplastics (MPs) detected in marine environments exhibit substantial variability in shape, size, polymer type, and other physicochemical properties. Although numerous laboratory studies have investigated the effects of MPs on marine organisms, studies specifically examining the effects of environmentally abundant aged polyethylene (PE) MPs on the early life stages of marine fishes, using officially recognized standardized test protocols remain limited. In this study, we evaluated the effects of additive-free, ultraviolet (UV)-aged, fragmented PE MPs (afPE-MPs) in three size classes (10, 30,

Effects of Temperature on Life-History Traits of Paralipsa gularis (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), a Newly Emerged Maize Pest from the Border Areas Between China and Southeast Asian Countries.

Paralipsa gularis (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is a storage pest native to Southeast Asia that has since spread to Northern Europe, North America, and other parts of Asia. In recent years, it has become an increasingly destructive pest in maize agroecosystems along the China-Southeast Asia border region, causing severe damage. Temperature is a key environmental factor influencing insect development, fecundity, and distribution, yet its effects on P. gularis remain unclear. In this study, we used an age-stage two-sex life table to evaluate the effects of temperature on the development dura

Patterns of genetic variation and life history traits of Zeuxapta seriolae infesting Seriola lalandi across the coastal and oceanic areas in the southeastern Pacific Ocean: potential implications for aquaculture.

BACKGROUND: The monogenean, Zeuxapta seriolae, is a host-specific parasite that has an extensive geographical distribution on its host, Seriola lalandi, and is considered highly pathogenic in farmed fish. In recent years, developing cultures of S. lalandi in different coastal localities in Southeastern Pacific Ocean (SEP) have been affected by moderate and heavy infections of this parasite, attributed to contagion from wild to farmed fish. Here, we evaluated the pattern of genetic variations and biological traits of Z. seriolae in a spatial and temporal scale across its geographical distributi

Cystoisospora belli infections in humans: the past 100 years.

Cystoisospora belli is a coccidian parasite of humans, with a direct fecal-oral transmission cycle. It is globally distributed, but mainly found in tropical and subtropical areas. Many cases of C. belli infections have been reported in patients with HIV, and in patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy for organ transplants or those treated for tumours worldwide. Unsporulated or partially sporulated oocysts of C. belli are excreted in feces. When sporulated oocysts in contaminated water or food are ingested, asexual and sexual stages of C. belli are confined to the epithelium of intestines

Operational and conceptual confusion in life history research necessitates the two-tiered model.

Our systematic analysis of operationalizations and conceptualizations of harshness (extrinsic mortality) and unpredictability in the (psychology) life history literature highlights that (1) employment of extremely diverse measures contributes to the confusion about the effect of harshness on life history traits and (2) few measures reflect energetic stress or ambient EM, such that Ellis et al.'s two-tiered model should motivate future research.
