We report a rare case of Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency (LSCD) in a 10-year-old child following chickenpox. The child presented with persistent ocular symptoms, including pain, redness, and photophobia, two months after the resolution of systemic chickenpox. Ophthalmic examination revealed conjunctival hyperemia, 360° conjunctivalization, corneal neovascularization, and an epithelial defect. LSCD, characterized by corneal neovascularization and conjunctivalization, can occur after viral infections, including herpes zoster. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of LSCD following chicke

A 6-year-old boy presented in 1998 with a 1 month history of lime injury in both eyes. Grade 4 chemical injury (Roper-Hall classification) progressed to total limbal stem cell deficiency in both eyes. Between July 2000 and July 2009, he cumulatively underwent 11 limbal stem cell transplantation surgeries, either direct or cultivated from either his father or mother, and 3 corneal transplants in both eyes. Each of the procedures led to a transient clearing of his visual axis to give vision in the range of 20/60 to 20/100 for a period of 1-3 months after which it failed. He finally underwent Bos

PURPOSE: To determine the feasibility of cultivated conjunctiva as a viable epithelial sheet for transplantation and corneal resurfacing in eyes with limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD).
METHODS: Human corneal epithelial (HCE) and human conjunctival epithelial (HCjE) cells were cultivated on human amniotic membrane (AM) to confluence and then air lifted to allow further stratification and differentiation. Denuded AM and cultivated HCE and cultivated HCjE cells were then transplanted into 18 eyes of rabbits with induced LSCD. The cultivated and engrafted epithelia were examined by transmission

We report the case of a 30-year-old woman with KID (keratitis ichthyosis deafness) syndrome consulting for massive corneal neovascularization. She had already undergone two unsuccessful penetrating keratoplasties in her left eye. Visual acuity was limited to no more than light perception because of the opacity and neovascularization of the graft. In the light of this case of limbal cell deficiency, we discuss the ophthalmologic manifestations of KID syndrome as well as its clinical characteristics, physiopathology, and mode of transmission.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate basal epithelial cell morphology (CM) in the central cornea and limbal areas of eyes with limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD).
METHODS: This was a prospective, cross-sectional comparative study. We developed a CM scoring system based on basal epithelial cell phenotypes graded from 0 (normal) to 3 (severe morphologic alterations); this system was evaluated by 2 independent masked observers. The CM score was compared with the LSCD clinical score, mean best-corrected visual acuity, and in vivo laser scanning confocal microscopy parameters used to

A 19-year-old woman presented to us after being diagnosed elsewhere with right eye total limbal stem cell deficiency resulting from a lime burn. She was advised to undergo limbal stem cell transplantation, but failed to immediately do so. Two years later, she underwent cultivated limbal epithelial transplantation (CLET). As she had severe loss of vision with persisting conjunctival nodule and symblepharon 2 years following surgery, an impression of failed CLET was formed. Subsequently, simple limbal epithelial transplantation (SLET) was performed. Nine months later, she developed a cataract in

PURPOSE: Transplantation of in vitro-cultivated limbal epithelium (TCLE) recently was developed to treat limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). The objective of this study was to characterize changes in the cornea during LSCD and on the corneal surface after TCLE.
DESIGN: Experimental study.
PARTICIPANTS AND CONTROLS: The pannus tissue excised from the corneas of 17 LSCD patients was analyzed to characterize the changes in the cornea during LSCD. Five corneal buttons obtained during perforating keratoplasty (pKP) from patients who had undergone TCLE at least 6 months before pKP were examined to

Limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) causes vision loss and is often treated by simple corneal epithelial cell transplantation with poor long-term efficiency. Here, we present a biomimetic bilayer limbal implant using digital light processing 3D printing technology with gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) and poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) bioinks containing corneal epithelial cells (CECs) and corneal stromal stem cells (CSSCs), which can transplant CECs and improve the limbal niche simultaneously. The GelMA/PEGDA hydrogel possessed robust mechanical properties to support surgical transplant

Sporotrichosis is a chronic granulomatous fungal infection caused by Sporothrix schenckii. Inoculation of the fungus through breached skin or mucosa typically results in nodular ulceration of the cutaneous and subcutaneous tissue as well as its draining lymphatic nodules. However, reports on ocular involvement have recently increased. We describe a severe case of diffuse granulomatous conjunctivitis involving bulbar and palpebral conjunctiva, resulting in inevitable damage to the limbal stem cells. Isolation of S. schenckii from a conjunctival swab confirmed the diagnosis of sporotrichosis. A
