Brain Functional Connectivity Changes in Patients with Acute Eye Pain: A Resting-State Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) Study.

BACKGROUND By using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we aimed to study the changes in potential brain function network activity in patients with acute eye pain. Also, by using the voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) method, we aimed to explore the relationship between spontaneous brain activity and the clinical features of patients with acute eye pain. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 15 patients with acute eye pain (5 women and 10 men; EP group) and 15 healthy controls (5 women and 10 men; HC group), were scanned by fMRI. The DC method was used to evaluate changes in spontaneous bra

Ictal visual hallucinations of numerals.

We studied three children with benign primary occipital epilepsy who had ictal numerical visual hallucinations. This unusual ictal event may occur in patients with left-sided, right-sided, or bilateral interictal spikes, and such attacks may begin in either occipital lobe. This event seems to be occipital, without limbic participation, although the ictal discharge may spread to limbic structures as the seizure evolves.

Acupuncture for ischemic stroke: cerebellar activation may be a central mechanism following Deqi.

The needling sensation of Deqi during acupuncture is a key factor of influencing acupuncture outcome. Recent studies have mainly focused on the brain function effects of Deqi in a physiological state. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) on the effects of acupuncture at Waiguan (SJ5) in pathological and physiological states is controversial. In this study, 12 patients with ischemic stroke received acupuncture at Waiguan (SJ5) and simultaneously underwent fMRI scanning of the brain, with imaging data of the activated areas obtained. Based on the patient's sensation, imaging data were al

Brain structural network modular and connectivity alterations in subtypes of patients with migraine and medication overuse headache.

Migraine, one of the most prevalent and debilitating neurological disorders, can be classified based on attack frequency into episodic migraine (EM) and chronic migraine (CM). Medication overuse headache (MOH), a type of chronic headache, arises when painkillers are overused by individuals with untreated or inadequately treated headaches. This study compares regional cortical morphological alterations and brain structural network changes among these headache subgroups. Sixty participants, including 20 in each of the following patient groups (EM, CM, MOH), and healthy controls (HC) completed th

Brain areas activated by uncertain reward-based decision-making in healthy volunteers.

Reward-based decision-making has been found to activate several brain areas, including the ventrolateral prefrontal lobe, orbitofrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, ventral striatum, and mesolimbic dopaminergic system. In this study, we observed brain areas activated under three degrees of uncertainty in a reward-based decision-making task (certain, risky, and ambiguous). The tasks were presented using a brain function audiovisual stimulation system. We conducted brain scans of 15 healthy volunteers using a 3.0T magnetic resonance scanner. We used SPM8 to analyze the location and intensi

Comparative analysis of background EEG activity in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy during valproic acid treatment: a standardized, low-resolution, brain electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA) study.

BACKGROUND: By definition, the background EEG is normal in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) patients and not accompanied by other developmental and cognitive problems. However, some recent studies using quantitative EEG (qEEG) reported abnormal changes in the background activity. QEEG investigation in patients undergoing anticonvulsant treatment might be a useful approach to explore the electrophysiology and anticonvulsant effects in JME. METHODS: We investigated background EEG activity changes in patients undergoing valproic acid (VPA) treatment using qEEG analysis in a distributed source m

Limbic and olfactory cortical circuits in focal seizures.

Epilepsies affecting the limbic regions are common and generate seizures often resistant to pharmacological treatment. Clinical evidence demonstrates that diverse regions of the mesial portion of the temporal lobe participate in limbic seizures; these include the hippocampus, the entorhinal, perirhinal and parahippocampal regions and the piriform cortex. The network mechanisms involved in the generation of olfactory-limbic epileptiform patterns will be here examined, with particular emphasis on acute interictal and ictal epileptiform discharges obtained by treatment with pro-convulsive drugs a

Altered resting-state functional connectivity in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder: A magnetoencephalography study.

Aberrant cortical-striatal-thalamic-cortical circuits have been implicated in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the neurobiological basis of OCD remains unclear. We compared patterns of functional connectivity in patients with OCD and in healthy controls using resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG). Participants comprised 24 patients with OCD (21 men, 3 women) and 22 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (19 men, 3 women). Resting-state measurements were obtained over a 6-min period using a 152-channel whole-head MEG system. We examined group differences

Histopathologic Characterization and Neurodegenerative Markers in Patients With Limbic Encephalitis Undergoing Epilepsy Surgery.

PURPOSE: Limbic encephalitis is an increasingly recognized cause of medial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) and associated cognitive deficits, potentially resulting in hippocampal sclerosis (HS). For several reasons, these patients usually do not undergo epilepsy surgery. Thus, histopathologic examinations in surgical specimens of clearly diagnosed limbic encephalitis are scarce. The purpose of this study was a detailed histopathologic analysis of surgical tissue alterations, including neurodegenerative markers, in patients with limbic encephalitis undergoing epilepsy surgery. METHODS: We invest

Multiple Neuropathologies Underly Hippocampal Subfield Atrophy in a Case With a Slowly Progressive Amnestic Syndrome: Challenging the Notion of Pure LATE-NC.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia in the elderly, marked by abnormal protein buildup (beta-amyloid and tau) resulting in neuronal loss, especially in the medial temporal lobe and other limbic regions. The presence of transactive response DNA binding protein 43 (TDP-43) immunoreactive inclusions in medial temporal lobe regions has also been associated with neuroimaging changes in limbic regions. It has been proposed that hypometabolism in limbic regions on [18F] fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in a patient with a slowly evolving amnestic syndrom

Calcification of the pineal gland: relationship to laterality of the epileptic foci in patients with complex partial seizures.

The right and left temporal lobes differ from each other with respect to the rate of intrauterine growth, the timing of maturation, rate of aging, anatomical organization, neurochemistry, metabolic rate, electroencephalographic measures, and function. These functional differences between the temporal lobes underlies the different patterns of psychopathology and endocrine reproductive disturbances noted in patients with temporolimbic epilepsy. The right hemisphere has greater limbic and reticular connections than the left. Since the pineal gland receives direct innervation from the limbic syste

Abnormal activation of the occipital lobes during emotion picture processing in major depressive disorder patients.

A large number of studies have demonstrated that depression patients have cognitive dysfunction. With recently developed brain functional imaging, studies have focused on changes in brain function to investigate cognitive changes. However, there is still controversy regarding abnormalities in brain functions or correlation between cognitive impairment and brain function changes. Thus, it is important to design an emotion-related task for research into brain function changes. We selected positive, neutral, and negative pictures from the International Affective Picture System. Patients with majo

The development of panic attacks and social phobia after stroke.

A patient developed panic attacks and social phobia after a stroke. The magnetic resonance imaging scan showed a focal abnormality in the right temporal lobe together with abnormalities extending into the occipital lobe. A pathogenic relationship between the panic attacks and the focal lesion in the temporal lobe is invoked. It is postulated that the temporal-limbic structures and the affiliated frontal-subcortical circuitry may represent the neural substrate for panic disorders.

Brain: supratentorial cortical anatomy.

Knowledge of the cerebral cortical lobes and gyri is critical for the localization of lesions and for the correlation of radiologic findings with neurologic symptoms and signs. This article deals with the six cerebral lobes-frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal, limbic, and insula-and the fissures and imaginary lines that divide them. The major gyri and sulci of each lobe are individually considered. Anatomy and function are correlated for a few selected areas of particular clinical importance.

[GABAB receptor autoimmune encephalitis presenting as transient epileptic amnesia].

This case was a 50-year-old healthy woman. After repeated transient amnesia, she developed tonic-clonic seizures and was admitted to our hospital. The brain MRI showed FLAIR hyperintensities in the left temporal lobe and EEG showed an epileptic discharge starting from the left temporal region. Based on these findings, we diagnosed temporal lobe epilepsy associated with acute limbic encephalitis. While she experienced recurrent transient amnesia, her cognitive functions were preserved except for her memory. These symptoms and EEG findings were consistent with transient epileptic amnesia (TEA).
