The number and distribution of fungiform papillae and taste buds after lingual nerve injuries in cats.

Taste buds and the papillae that carry them are trophically dependent upon an intact innervation. The number and size of fungiform papillae and the number of taste buds on their surface were determined 3 months after crushing or sectioning the combined trunk of the chorda tympani and lingual nerves. After crushing there were fewer fungiform papillae but their size and number of taste buds were similar to that on the unoperated side. After nerve section there were considerably fewer recognizable fungiform papillae on the operated side and each carried a reduced number of taste buds.

Injury to the inferior alveolar and lingual nerves in successful and failed coronectomies: systematic review.

The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the incidence of damage to the inferior alveolar (IAN) and dental nerves in successful coronectomies, and to compare the results with coronectomies that failed. To the best of our knowledge no such analyses have been reported. Between January 1990 and October 2016 we surveyed published papers to find those that examined clinical outcomes after coronectomy. Fourteen met the criteria for final inclusion. Of 2087 coronectomies, 152 failed (7%). Successful procedures were associated with a low overall incidence of injury to the IAN (0.5%) and lingu

Unilateral lingual nerve and hypoglossal nerve injury caused by a novel laryngeal mask airway: a case report.

Cranial nerve injury by a laryngeal mask airway is rare but a serious complication. The nerve injuries must be prevented during the intubation using a laryngeal mask airway. We report a female patient who complained of tongue numbness, slurred speech, and slight difficulty in swallowing solid food after a hand surgery. She was then diagnosed with unilateral lingual nerve and hypoglossal nerve injuries. Extreme head rotation, relatively small oral cavity, and wide rigid composition at the lower part of the novel laryngeal mask probably resulted in cranial nerve injury.

A new treatment for lingual nerve injury: an anatomical feasibility study for using a buccal nerve pedicle graft.

PURPOSE: Lingual nerve (LN) palsy is a serious complication in dentistry and repaired by direct suture or a free graft technique. To our knowledge, there has been no study using a (long) buccal nerve (BN) graft as a donor for LN repair. Therefore, we aimed to clarify the location of the BN and investigate if it is feasible to reroute the BN to the LN. METHODS: Twenty-four sides from 12 fresh-frozen Caucasian cadaveric heads were used in this study. The mean age at death was 73.9 ± 13.4 years. The LN was dissected on the floor of the oral cavity medial to the third molar tooth. Next, the mucos

Can magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reduce lingual nerve injuries during mandibular third molar surgery? A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Recent advancements in MRI, with its superior soft tissue resolution and ionising radiation-free nature, provide a promising solution for the limitations of current imaging modalities. This review aims to evaluate whether MRI can be utilised to reduce the risk of lingual nerve (LN) injury during mandibular third molar surgery (M3M). METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, the protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024625994). A systematic literature search was employed across MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Science Direct without language or date res

Use of Fibrin Glue as an Adjunct in the Repair of Lingual Nerve Injury: Case Report.

This report describes a case of lingual nerve injury repair using a novel technique in which Tisseel fibrin glue was used to stabilize an Axoguard nerve conduit placed around the site of primary neurorrhaphy to decrease the number of sutures required for stabilization. Five months postoperatively, the patient subjectively had increased sensation and improved taste in the left lingual nerve distribution. At neurosensory examination, the patient exhibited functional neurosensory recovery (S3+ on the Medical Research Council Scale).

Changes in vanilloid receptor 1 (TRPV1) expression following lingual nerve injury.

We have investigated a possible role for vanilloid receptor 1 (TRPV1), a transducer of noxious stimuli, in the development of neuropathic pain following injury to a peripheral branch of the trigeminal nerve. In nine adult ferrets the left lingual nerve was sectioned and recovery permitted for 3 days, 3 weeks or 3 months (3 ferrets per group). A retrograde tracer, fluorogold, was injected into the damaged nerve to identify associated cell bodies in the trigeminal ganglion. Three further ferrets, receiving only tracer injection, served as uninjured controls. Indirect immunofluorescence for TRPV1

Bilateral Lingual Nerve Injury Following Endotracheal Intubation: Risk Factors and Diagnostic Considerations.

BACKGROUND Endotracheal intubation is an essential procedure to protect the airway. However, immediate complications like voice hoarseness, cervical spine injury, and tooth trauma are common. One of the rarest complications is lingual nerve palsy. Risk factors include small airway instruments, non-supine position, nitrous oxide use, and difficult intubation. Only 15 cases of lingual nerve injury were identified worldwide, and only 2 of them were bilateral. This case report describes the third case of bilateral lingual nerve palsy after intubation. CASE REPORT We present a 52-year-old woman adm

Lingual nerve injury II. Observations on sensory recovery after micro-neurosurgical reconstruction.

The aim of this study was to report on neurosensory recovery after micro-surgical lingual nerve repair, and to evaluate the effect on recovery of age, delay in repair and gender of the patient. Seventy-four patients entered the study. The micro-surgical repair performed was direct nerve suture (n=71), external neurolysis (n=2) and excision of neuroma without nerve coaptation (n=1). A standardized neurosensory examination was employed in all patients before surgery and during follow up. Recovery was significant for perception of all tested stimuli: feather light touch, pin prick, pointed/dull d

Permanent lingual nerve injury after dental procedures: a retrospective study of 228 patients.

Lingual nerve injury (LNI) is a rare, serious complication and previous studies include limited numbers of cases. The aim of this retrospective study was to report the neurosensory outcomes for a large patient cohort with permanent LNI and correlate the mechanism of injury (surgical vs non-surgical) to neurosensory characteristics. Demographics, procedural parameters, mandibular third molar (M3) position, surgeon type, neurosensory test results, and symptoms were recorded for 228 patients and analysed. The majority were female (67.1%). Overall, 59.6% of LNIs were caused by M3 removal and 36.4%

Testing of iatrogenic lingual nerve injury using a novel psychophysical method and oral reflexes.

In a case of long-term sensory loss in the tongue following third molar extraction, a novel, efficient and effective psychophysical test was used. This initial test, which includes the presentation of pairs of a real and fake stimulus, and a forced-choice response, was applied to determine whether relatively thick or thin afferent fibres of the lingual nerve were affected. The results suggested that thick fibres on the right tongue side were mainly affected. Sensory loss was confirmed and its extent assessed by a standard test determining thresholds of light touch. Furthermore, sensory functio

Lingual nerve injury following the use of an oropharyngeal airway under endotracheal general anesthesia.

We report a patient who presented for elective myomectomy. Laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation were achieved smoothly without unduly force. An oropharyngeal airway was inserted after endotracheal intubation for biting and was left in the oral cavity until the end of surgery. Two days after surgery, the patient complained of numbness on the right side of her tongue. Neurological examination revealed an area of hypesthesia about 1 cm in diameter on the right side of the tongue tip. The motor function, taste perception, and speech articulation were all intact. A right lingual nerve lesion wi

[Lingual nerve injury during removal of the lower third molar: importance of early intervention].

INTRODUCTION: Lingual nerve injury is one of the most important complications after removal of a lower third molar. CASE REPORT: We report two cases of this complication in our experience. In the first case, lingual nerve injury was repaired immediately and the patient recovered total tongue sensitivity. In the second case, lingual nerve exploration was not undertaken and the patient developed complete tongue anesthesia. DISCUSSION: Opinions are quite different about the delay before exploration of an injured lingual nerve. However, absence of sensory improvement incited us to undertake surg

New method for the objective evaluation of injury to the lingual nerve after operation on third molars.

Existing tests of function of the lingual nerve are either subjective or, when they elicit the jaw-opening reflex, are dependent on the cooperation of the subject. We report a study in 12 healthy volunteers and 12 patients with iatrogenic injury to the lingual nerve. A bite block (containing stimulating electrodes) was held between the teeth and the tongue was held on to the electrodes by suction. When the lingual nerve was intact, an electrical stimulus elicited brief inhibition of masseteric electromyographic activity. Local analgesia and iatrogenic injury to the lingual nerve altered nerve

Quantitative thermosensory testing of the lingual and inferior alveolar nerves in health and after iatrogenic injury.

Quantitative testing of the sensory thermal thresholds testing was applied at sites innervated by the third division of the trigeminal nerve in 20 patients with no reported sensory impairment and in 20 subjects with iatrogenic nerve injuries after third molar surgery. In the control group sensitivity to cooling was significantly greater than the sensitivity to warming at all sites. The labial mucosa innervated by the inferior alveolar nerve was significantly more sensitive to thermal changes than either the mental region or the lingual mucosa. At sites supplied by nerves that had been injured,
