Specific language impairment: linguistic and neurobiological aspects.

Specific language impairment (SLI) occurs when children present language maturation, at least 12 months behind their chronological age in the absence of sensory or intellectual deficits, pervasive developmental disorders, evident cerebral damage, and adequate social and emotional conditions. The aim of this study was to classify a group of children according to the subtypes of SLI and to correlate clinical manifestations with cortical abnormalities. Seventeen children with SLI were evaluated. Language assessment was based on standardized test (Peabody) and a non-standardized protocol, which in

Speech interactions with linguistic, cognitive, and visuomotor tasks.

Lip movements were examined across several repetitive speaking conditions (speech alone and speaking concurrently with a linguistic, cognitive, or visuomotor challenge task) in 20 young adults. Performance in these nonspeech activities was also compared between isolated tasks and concurrent speech conditions. Linguistic challenges resulted in increased spatiotemporal variability of lip displacement across repetitions. Motor challenges led to more rapid speech with smaller lip displacement. These qualitatively different changes suggest that different aspects of attention are required for lingui

[Characterization of the linguistic profile of a family with Perisylvian Syndrome].

BACKGROUND: Perisylvian syndrome refers to a variety of clinical manifestations associated to lesions in the perisylvian or opercular regions. Polymicrogyria is the most common structural malformation found. The syndrome may be inherited and the clinical spectrum includes subtle language disturbances on one end and more severe characteristics such as prominent pseudobulbar signs and refractory epilepsy on the other end. Other studies have already associated perisylvian polymicrogyria with developmental language disorders or specific language impairment. AIM: to describe the language deficits

[Non-linguistic cognitive symptoms of cerebral stroke].

BACKGROUND: Cognitive symptoms are common after stroke, but doctors' knowledge about such symptoms seems sparse. METHODS: We review the literature and present our own clinical experience on selected cognitive losses after stroke. RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION: The most common non-linguistic cognitive symptoms are neglect (hemi-inattention), visuospatial problems (difficulties in putting elements together or to perform spatial tasks), and apraxia (difficulties in performing voluntary, purposeful tasks due to mistakes in the choice and order of motor elements). More than half of patients suffer f

The lateralized linguistic cerebellum: a review and a new hypothesis.

During the past 2 decades the collaboration across disciplines and the methodologic and conceptual advances of contemporary neuroscience have brought about a substantial modification of the traditional view of the cerebellum as a mere coordinator of autonomic and somatic motor functions. Growing insights in the neuroanatomy of the cerebellum and its interconnections, evidence from functional neuroimaging and neurophysiological research, and advancements in clinical and experimental neuropsychology have established the view that the cerebellum participates in a much wider range of functions tha

Infants' association of linguistic labels with causal actions.

Six experiments examined infants' ability to associate nonsense words with 2 causal actions: pushing and pulling. Although Experiment 1 found that 14-month-olds failed to form word-action associations, 18-month-olds in Experiment 2 provided reliable evidence of doing so. Additional experiments explored why 14-month-olds may not have formed such an association. Experiment 3 examined 14-month-olds' ability to discriminate a change in either the action or the label when the other element was held constant. Infants discriminated the change in label but not the change in action. When the language l

Linguistic evaluation of Profet II: a pilot project.

Profet, a word prediction program, was designed to accelerate the writing process and to minimize the writing effort of persons with motor dysfunction. It has also proved to be beneficial in text construction for persons with linguistic impairment such as dyslexia. With increasing linguistic demands on support for individuals with severe reading and writing difficulties/dyslexia, the need for an improved version of Profet arose. Thus, Profet II was designed. In this study, a procedure for evaluating Profet II has been developed. Results from a single-case evaluation study with a person with dy

Deathbed scene narratives: a construct and linguistic analysis.

The present study explored temporal and self/other dimensions of death attitudes among young adults. One hundred seventy-two undergraduate students were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 conditions: writing about one's death (age unspecified), one's death as a young adult, or the death of another (age unspecified), or the death of other as a young adult. Results indicated that the death of another, but not of oneself, was associated with more realistic considerations of death (e.g., pain, negative emotions). In addition, participants who wrote about death at an early age were less likely to describe

Linguistic abilities in Italian children with Williams syndrome.

Recent studies on subjects with Williams syndrome (WS) have revealed a particular facility for language, rarely observed in other mental retarded populations, inspiring much belief in the independence of language from cognition. Lexical and morphosyntactic abilities of 17 Italian WS individuals, between 4.10 and 15.3 years of age, were evaluated both in comprehension and production and compared with those of normally developing Italian children. WS subjects look similar to normal controls in lexical comprehension, but they appear to perform more poorly in grammatical comprehension. Furthermore

Linguistic coding deficits in foreign language learners.

As increasing numbers of colleges and universities require a foreign language for graduation in at least one of their degree programs, reports of students with difficulties in learning a second language are multiplying. Until recently, little research has been conducted to identify the nature of this problem. Recent attempts by the authors have focused upon subtle but ongoing language difficulties in these individuals as the source of their struggle to learn a foreign language. The present paper attempts to expand upon this concept by outlining a theoretical framework based upon a linguistic c

Linguistic correlates of pantomime recognition in aphasic patients.

Aphasic patients were given tests assessing pantomime recognition, reading comprehension, aural comprehension, and naming ability to determine whether defective pantomime recognition could be the result of a disturbance of symbolic thinking also affecting linguistic functioning. Defects in pantomime recognition always occurred in conjunction with reading defects of at least comparable severity, but reading defects sometimes occurred without comparable defects in pantomime recognition. The relationship of pantomime recognition with both aural comprehension and naming ability was significantly w

Effects of selected linguistic variables on apraxia of speech.

Ten adults with apraxia of speech responded to sentences of an article (pronoun) + noun + verb + article (pronoun) + noun design. Each sentence was presented and then re-presented with the noun in Noun Phrase 1 (NP1) or Noun Phrase 2 (NP2) omitted. The subjects' task was to orally produce the omitted word. Sentences were either active or passive and the omitted noun was a concrete, abstract, or nonsense word. Results revealed significantly more errors in NP1 than NP2, more errors on nonsense and abstract nouns than on concrete nouns, and more errors on passive than on active voice sentences. L

Effect of neuro-linguistic programming on comfort after cesarean: a randomized controlled trial neuro-linguistic programming comfort level cesarean.

BACKGROUND: Due to the deterioration in comfort experienced after cesarean section, mothers go through troubled hours, have problems with breastfeeding, and cannot even meet their own and their baby's needs. This study was conducted to determine the effect of neuro-linguistic programming on mothers' comfort levels following cesarean section in the postpartum period. METHODS: This study was performed from 1 January to 1 September 2023 as a prospective randomized controlled single-blind clinical trial with 100 participants (50 experimental, 50 control). From acoustic to linguistic analysis of temporal speech structure: Acousto-linguistic transformation during speech perception using speech quilts.

Speech perception entails the mapping of the acoustic waveform to linguistic representations. For this transformation to succeed, the speech signal needs to be tracked over various temporal windows at high temporal precision in order to decode linguistic units ranging from phonemes (tens of milliseconds) to sentences (seconds). Here, we tested the hypothesis that cortical processing of speech-specific temporal structure is modulated by higher-level linguistic analysis. Using fMRI, we measured BOLD signal changes to 4 s long speech quilts with variable temporal structure (30, 120, 480, 960 ms s

When Tech Meets Touch: Multistakeholder Perspectives and Implementation Strategies for eHealth in Chronic Kidney Disease: A Systematic Review Using Computational Linguistics.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease heavily burdens patients and health systems. Digital health interventions offer significant potential but face implementation challenges driven by stakeholders' emotional and practical experiences. This review synthesizes these affective dimensions to inform clinical practice. METHODS: A qualitative systematic review was conducted across six databases for studies published through April 2025. Methodological quality was rigorously appraised. We integrated Python-based computational sentiment analysis to quantify stakeholder emotional polarity (positive, negat

Combining Topic Modeling, Sentiment Analysis, and Corpus Linguistics to Analyze Unstructured Web-Based Patient Experience Data: Case Study of Modafinil Experiences.

BACKGROUND: Patient experience data from social media offer patient-centered perspectives on disease, treatments, and health service delivery. Current guidelines typically rely on systematic reviews, while qualitative health studies are often seen as anecdotal and nongeneralizable. This study explores combining personal health experiences from multiple sources to create generalizable evidence. OBJECTIVE: The study aims to (1) investigate how combining unsupervised natural language processing (NLP) and corpus linguistics can explore patient perspectives from a large unstructured dataset of mod

Linguistic pitch is hierarchically encoded in the right ventral stream.

A challenge for speech perception research is to explain how listeners transform speech sounds into meaning. Using MEG and complementary analytical methods, we expose the neural dynamics that generate meaningful linguistic units (e.g., sentence type: question, statement) that are abstracted from lower-level perceptual cues (fundamental frequency (f0) modulations). In analogy to the well-established left-lateralized hierarchical organization of a ventral stream in the domains of vision and auditory processing, we show that the emergence of abstract f0 representations is supported by a right-lat

Structural brain complexity is associated with linguistic complexity in psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Brain-structural and language abnormalities in people with psychotic symptoms (PSx) have long been reported. A key question is whether language alterations are a potential behavioral readout of brain cortical gray matter changes. Adding to previous evidence for this in the cases of cortical thinning and gyrification, we here used structural MRI (sMRI) to relate a complexity-theoretical metric, the Largest Lyapunov Exponent (lambda [λ]), to computational linguistic complexity metrics extracted from spontaneous speech. This study aimed to identify psychosis-related regional changes i

Linguistic Analysis of Patients' Labels During 3MDR Psychotherapy.

Background: This study explores the role of linguistic labels expressed by patients during Motion-assisted Multi-modal Memory Desensitisation and Reconsolidation (3MDR) therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Labels represent a patient's key emotional, cognitive, and physical reactions to images associated with traumatic experiences. By analyzing labels, the goal is to provide insights into their progress throughout the therapeutic process. Methods: Data were collected from 6 patients who underwent 3MDR therapy across 6 sessions. A total of 1060 labels associated with trauma-related
