[Squamous carcinoma of the lip. Review of 98 cases].

Squamous lip carcinoma. A review of 98 cases. Ninety-eight new cases of squamous lip carcinoma (87 males and 11 females), diagnosed over a 10 year period at the Institute of Pathological Anatomy of the University of Trieste were studied from an epidemiological point of view and in relation to their biological behaviour. The overall incidence was equal to 6.67%... in males and 0.73%... in females, with a male to female ratio of 9.2:1. The distribution of the cases can be directly correlated to age: the incidence in the 80-84 age group among males was 3 times greater than that in the 60-64 age g

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma on lower lip and microinvasive verrucous carcinoma in vocal cord: Case report.

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma is a biphasic low-grade malignant tumor, which represents approximately 1% of all salivary gland tumors. This tumor occurs mostly in the parotid gland, followed by submandibular gland and minor salivary glands. Women, mostly fifth to the eighth decade of life, are commonly affected. Histopathologically, epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma is composed of an inner single layer of eosinophilic cuboidal ductal cells and outer single or multiple layers of clear myoepithelial cells. We present a case of a 69 years old man who had a scar on lower the lip for 10 years

Kuttner tumour: an unusual cause of enlargement of a minor salivary gland in the lip.

Kuttner tumour is benign, chronic, sclerosing sialadenitis that usually occurs in the submandibular gland and is regarded as a salivary gland neoplasm because of its clinical features. We describe a tumour arising from a minor salivary gland of the upper lip. To our knowledge, there are only two previously reported cases.

A rare case of Hidradenoma of the lower lip.

Hidradenoma are rare benign tumors with eccrine or apocrine differentiation that most often presents as a small, firm, solitary dermal nodule. At times, hidradenoma shows striking cytologic and histologic similarity to other neoplasms, including its malignant counterpart, hidradenocarcinoma. We present the first reported case of benign hidradenoma of the lower lip. The case illustrates important diagnostic features of hidradenoma and discusses the current understanding of its malignant potential and the appropriate management of such lesions.

Widespread metachronous carcinoid tumour metastases to the head and neck: a unique presentation.

Carcinoid tumours are usually slow-growing, neuroendocrine neoplasms that primarily affect the gastrointestinal tract and bronchial tree. Although relatively rare, isolated, single metastasis to the head and neck has been reported. We present a unique case of 6 metachronous carcinoid metastases to both parotid glands, the left submandibular gland, upper lip, and thyroid, over 3 years. To our knowledge, this widespread presentation in the head and neck has not previously been reported.

Distinctive expression of DNA replication factors in squamous cell carcinomas of the lip, face and oral cavity.

OBJECTIVE: Uncontrolled proliferation and aberrations in cell-cycle progression are fundamental issues in cancer. In this study we aimed to determine and compare deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) replication licensing factors at the mRNA and protein levels among squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the lip, facial-skin and oral cavity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 103 lip, oral and face SCCs were immunohistochemically stained with MCM2 (mini-chromosome maintenance 2), geminin, and ki67, and their labeling-indices were calculated. Also, 57 SCCs from the same regions along with their adjacent norm

Large Pleomorphic Adenoma of The Upper Lip in a Middle-Aged Woman With Facial Deformity, Tooth Displacement, and Bone Loss: Uncommon Clinical Presentation of a Benign Tumor.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign neoplasm of the salivary glands, occurring in both major and minor glands, with a predilection for the intraoral palate. Its presentation in the upper lip is rare and, when large, may result in facial deformity, alveolar bone resorption, and tooth displacement, especially in long-standing lesions. Clinically, PA presents as a solid, painless, slow-growing, and well-circumscribed mass, which may cause functional morbidity depending on its size and location. The differential diagnosis includes canalicular adenoma, other benign minor salivary gla

Acinic cell carcinoma of the posterior buccal mucosa: A rare case report.

Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a low-grade malignant salivary gland neoplasm that comprises approximately 17% of primary salivary gland malignancies or about 6% of all salivary gland neoplasms. The most common intraoral sites are the buccal mucosa, lips, and palate. The diagnosis of ACC frequently presents difficulties, owing to its great radiological and cytological similarity with benign tumors and with normal acinar component of the salivary gland, respectively. The management of ACC consists of complete surgical excision. Here, we report a case of ACC on the left retromolar trigone, a rare

Pleomorphic Adenoma in Retromolar Area: A Very Rare Case Report and Review of Literature.

Among all neoplasms affecting head and neck region, salivary gland neoplasms are rare. Pleomorphic adenomas are the most common benign salivary gland tumours making up to 50% of major and minor salivary gland tumours. Intraorally pleomorphic adenoma is mostly found on palate and lips and very rarely in retromolar area. Here we are reporting a rare case of pleomorphic adenoma in right lower retromolar area in a 31-year-old female, the lesion was excised in toto with safety margins under local anaesthesia and postoperative follow up after six months didn't showed any recurrence.

Oral soft tissue malignancies in Ibadan, Nigeria.

Eighty-nine primary malignant neoplasms of the oral and oro-pharyngeal tissues excluding bone and salivary gland tissue were studied over a period of 21 years. They constituted 0.4% of the total number of neoplasms seen at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, over that period and contribute only a small proportion, in contrast to the widely held view that oral tumours are very common in Africa. Squamous cell carcinoma was the commonest type of lesion seen and the commonly affected sites were palate, gum (gingiva), tongue, lip and floor of mouth, in that order. The incidental overall male:f

The canalicular adenoma: considerations on differential diagnosis and treatment.

The canalicular adenoma is an uncommon, benign salivary gland neoplasm that usually occurs in or near the upper lip of elderly patients. A histologic study of 49 tumors revealed that they are often multifocal, may infiltrate their capsule, and are occasionally unencapsulated. Based on these findings, the method of treatment, as well as a differential diagnosis of minor salivary gland lesions, is discussed.

Apocrine Mixed Tumor of the Upper Cutaneous Lip: A Case Report.

Chondroid syringomas are rare adnexal neoplasms composed of epithelial and mesenchymal components, posing diagnostic challenges due to their diverse histological features. We report an atypical presentation of an apocrine mixed tumor in a 51-year-old female patient who presented with a 0.7 cm firm, flesh-colored nodule on the right lateral cutaneous lip. The patient's clinical findings included significant actinic damage, such as dyschromia, elastosis, lentigines, and actinic keratoses, indicative of chronic sun exposure. Over four months, the lesion increased in size to 1.7 cm x 1.2 cm, warra

Desmoplastic melanoma of the lower lip: a case report.

Desmoplastic melanoma is a rare variant of malignant melanoma and one of the main causes of clinical and histological misdiagnosis in the realm of melanocytic neoplasms. Its relatively innocuous clinical appearance and the absence of pigmentation usually lead to a clinical misdiagnosis. The authors report a case of desmoplastic melanoma located in the lower lip of a 42-year-old man and review the literature regarding pathogenesis, clinicopathological features, differential diagnosis, and therapeutic management of desmoplastic melanomas.

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome.

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome has as its hallmarks such diverse manifestations as numerous cutaneous basal cell cancers and epidermal cysts, palmar and plantar pits, keratocysts of the jaw, calcified dural folds, various skeletal anomalies, cleft lip and/or palate, and various other neoplasms or hamartomas. Inheritance is autosomal dominant. The etiology of all of the above findings appears to be a mutation in a tumor suppressor gene that also plays a role in normal embryonic development.

Superficial paramucosal clear cell sarcoma of the soft parts resembling melanoma in a 13-year-old boy.

Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) of tendons and aponeuroses, also known as melanoma of soft parts, represents an aggressive rare malignancy that is characterized by a nested or fascicular pattern of spindled cells and a pathognomonic reciprocal translocation, t(12;22)(q13;q12), that results in the fusion of EWSR1 and ATF1 genes. Numerous recent studies have recognized the importance of a cutaneous CCS variant that can mimic a broad spectrum of entities, including spindle cell melanoma, spindle cell squamous carcinoma, cutaneous leiomyosarcoma and atypical fibroxanthoma. We report a case of a 13-year-o

A Rare Nasopharyngeal Teratoma Arising From the Vomer.

Teratomas are rare germ cell neoplasms derived from the 3 germinal layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm). Nasopharyngeal teratoma is a very rare teratoma arising anywhere from the oronasal cavity, regarded as an expanding, avity filling lesion, with a high mortality rate because of severe airway obstruction, especially in the neonatal period and make up only 2% of all teratomas. The authors present a case of an infant girl with a single, finger-like, hairy teratoma arising from the vomer and protruding from the mouth with bilateral complete cleft palate, cleft lip, and cleft alveolus. Swelling on lower lip…not always a mucocele !!!

Schwannomas are well characterized uncommon neural neoplasms which may rarely present with variation in clinical manifestation. Oral Schwannomas clinically simulate other lesions like traumatic fibroma, pyogenic granuloma, mucocele and salivary gland lesions. The diagnosis of schwannoma is typically made at the time of surgery following biopsy and surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment with no chances of recurrence as they are well encapsulated. We present a case of schwannoma of lower lip occurring in a 21-year-old female patient.
