BACKGROUND: Subclinical atherosclerosis is frequently observed in type 1 diabetes (T1D) although the mechanisms and markers involved in the evolution to established cardiovascular disease are not well known. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol in T1D is normal or even high, and changes in its functionality and proteomics are considered. The relative content of various fatty acids in serum lipoproteins was determined in patients with type IIa (38), IIb (49) and IV (77) of hyperlipoproteinemia and compared with 52 controls. The effects of bezafibrate on serum lipids, lipoproteins, apolipoproteins, and post-heparin lipolytic activities were studied in 17 patients with hypertriglyceridemia. We studied a selected group of 39 female patients suffering from primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC).
