Individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) and autism are characterized by different social phenotypes but have been said to show similar atypicalities of face-processing style. Although the structural encoding of faces may be similarly atypical in these two developmental disorders, there are clear differences in overall face skills. The inclusion of both populations in the same study can address how the profile of face skills varies across disorders. The current paper explored the processing of identity, eye-gaze, lipreading, and expressions of emotion using the same participants across face dom

Lip language recognition urgently needs wearable and easy-to-use interfaces for interference-free and high-fidelity lip-reading acquisition and to develop accompanying data-efficient decoder-modeling methods. Existing solutions suffer from unreliable lip reading, are data hungry, and exhibit poor generalization. Here, we propose a wearable lip language decoding technology that enables interference-free and high-fidelity acquisition of lip movements and data-efficient recognition of fluent lip language based on wearable motion capture and continuous lip speech movement reconstruction. The metho

The purpose of this research was to determine some of the effects of consonant recognition training on the speech recognition performance of hearing-impaired adults. Two groups of ten subjects each received seven hours of either auditory or visual consonant recognition training, in addition to a standard two-week, group-oriented, inpatient aural rehabilitation program. A third group of fifteen subjects received the standard two-week program, but no supplementary individual consonant recognition training. An audiovisual sentence recognition test, as well as tests of auditory and visual consonan

Progress in the field of auditory rehabilitation of adult patients with sensorineural hearing loss has been made possible by combined contributions from technology, successively manufacturing better hearing aids and additional communication instruments, institutional arrangements and the achievements within clinical audiology, successively resulting in better knowledge of several basic diagnostic and therapeutic factors. Hearing aid fitting, as is well known, is still a controversial area because of many unknown factors. The same holds true for auditory training and speech reading, which have

Adults use vision to perceive low-fidelity speech; yet how children acquire this ability is not well understood. The literature indicates that children show reduced sensitivity to visual speech from kindergarten to adolescence. We hypothesized that this pattern reflects the effects of complex tasks and a growth period with harder-to-utilize cognitive resources, not lack of sensitivity. We investigated sensitivity to visual speech in children via the phonological priming produced by low-fidelity (non-intact onset) auditory speech presented audiovisually (see dynamic face articulate consonant/rh

In a previous study we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to demonstrate activation in auditory cortex during silent speechreading. Since image acquisition during fMRI generates acoustic noise, this pattern of activation could have reflected an interaction between background scanner noise and the visual lip-read stimuli. In this study we employed an event-related fMRI design which allowed us to measure activation during speechreading in the absence of acoustic scanner noise. In the experimental condition, hearing subjects were required to speechread random numbers from a silent

Deaf patients depend on intermediate vision for interpersonal communication. Deaf presbyopes are at a particular disadvantage since they are usually corrected for near and far vision with bifocals without consideration of their intermediate vision. Progressive addition lenses were used in this study to provide an intermediate correction for a group of deaf presbyopes. The patients' communication ability was tested through Varilux II lenses and habitual bifocals on a series of standardized lip reading and sign language tests. The patients showed better visual communication skills with the progr

In challenging acoustic scenarios, speech processing is often linked to listening effort, which can be described as the balance between cognitive demands and motivation to understand speech. In such conditions, people usually rely on several behavioral strategies to support speech understanding and reduce listening effort (e.g., speech-reading behavior). Still, it is not clear what cognitive mechanisms underlie the use of behavioral strategies for listening. We hypothesized that the cognitive and motivational dimensions of listening effort may also drive speech-reading strategies spontaneously

Auditory speech can be difficult to understand but seeing the articulatory movements of a speaker can drastically improve spoken-word recognition and, on the longer-term, it helps listeners to adapt to acoustically distorted speech. Given that individuals with developmental dyslexia (DD) have sometimes been reported to rely less on lip-read speech than typical readers, we examined lip-read-driven adaptation to distorted speech in a group of adults with DD ( N = 29) and a comparison group of typical readers ( N = 29). Participants were presented with acoustically distorted Dutch words (six-chan

PURPOSE: Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children may develop compensatory strategies in language learning due to auditory limitations, such as using speechreading to process spoken information. However, it remains unclear whether similar visual compensatory mechanisms are employed by DHH children when acquiring written languages, especially in visually complex logographic systems such as Chinese. This study examined the characteristics of speechreading as well as phonological and visual-orthographic processing skills in Chinese reading among DHH children, utilizing both age- and reading level-

We report the first three cases of selective developmental letter position dyslexia in English. Although the parents and teachers of the children were concerned about these children's reading, standard tests did not reveal their deficit. It was only when the appropriate target words were presented, in this case, migratable words, that their letter position dyslexia was detected. Whereas previous research has described cases with acquired and developmental forms of letter position dyslexia in Hebrew and Arabic readers, this is the first report of this type of reading disorder in English. The ca

The monaural speech-reception threshold of sentences in noise, here defined as the 50% correct-syllables threshold, was measured for a female speaker with and without speechreading via a video monitor. The additional visual information resulted in a 4.6-dB lower threshold for a group of 12 young subjects and in a 4.0-dB lower threshold for a group of 18 elderly subjects compared to auditory presentation alone.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) produces benign Schwann cell tumors on many cranial nerves, in particular on the vestibular portions of the VIIIn bilaterally. Removal of these vestibular schwannomas usually severs the auditory portion of the VIIIn, thus deafening the patients. The auditory brainstem implant (ABI) was designed to provide prosthetic electric stimulation of the cochlear nucleus in the brainstem to restore some hearing sensations to patients deafened by bilateral removal of vestibular schwannomas. This study will review the new developments and improving outcomes

Reading is central to academic and vocational success. Some deaf children face reading challenges due to limited access to spoken or signed language. Robust phonological representations are key to reading development in hearing children. Spoken language phonology may be one of many contributors to reading development in deaf children. Indeed, speechreading ability correlates with reading skill in both deaf and hearing individuals, suggesting it is linked to reading development regardless of hearing status. Further support for this hypothesis would be provided by evidence that similar neural re

The effects of visual speech (the moving image of the speaker's face uttering speech sound) on early auditory evoked fields (AEFs) were examined using a helmet-shaped magnetoencephalography system in 12 healthy volunteers (9 males, mean age 35.5 years). AEFs (N100m) in response to the monosyllabic sound /be/ were recorded and analyzed under three different visual stimulus conditions, the moving image of the same speaker's face uttering /be/ (congruent visual stimuli) or uttering /ge/ (incongruent visual stimuli), and visual noise (still image processed from speaker's face using a strong Gaussi

Traditionally, the left frontal and parietal lobes have been associated with language production while regions in the temporal lobe are seen as crucial for language comprehension. However, recent evidence suggests that the classical language areas constitute an integrated network where each area plays a crucial role both in speech production and perception. We used functional MRI to examine whether observing speech motor movements (without auditory speech) relative to non-speech motor movements preferentially activates the cortical speech areas. Furthermore, we tested whether the activation in
