The effects of temporal cues, point-light displays, and faces on speech identification and listening effort.

Among the most robust findings in speech research is that the presence of a talking face improves the intelligibility of spoken language. Talking faces supplement the auditory signal by providing fine phonetic cues based on the placement of the articulators, as well as temporal cues to when speech is occurring. In this study, we varied the amount of information contained in the visual signal, ranging from temporal information alone to a natural talking face. Participants were presented with spoken sentences in energetic or informational masking in four different visual conditions: audio-only,

Listening Effort Measured Using a Dual-task Paradigm in Adults With Different Amounts of Noise Exposure.

OBJECTIVES: Excessive noise levels can result in hearing damage and/or hearing-related symptoms, thereby leading to impaired communication and, eventually a decrease in the quality of life. Moreover, in daily practice, subjects often indicate that listening in noisy situations is a challenging and often exhausting experience, even in the absence of a clinically significant hearing loss. Hence, a person's perceived difficulty of the listening situation will also be important to consider. It has been suggested that beyond the peripheral factors, there are some central cognitive correlates of spe

Impact of stimulus-related factors and hearing impairment on listening effort as indicated by pupil dilation.

Previous research has reported effects of masker type and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) on listening effort, as indicated by the peak pupil dilation (PPD) relative to baseline during speech recognition. At about 50% correct sentence recognition performance, increasing SNRs generally results in declining PPDs, indicating reduced effort. However, the decline in PPD over SNRs has been observed to be less pronounced for hearing-impaired (HI) compared to normal-hearing (NH) listeners. The presence of a competing talker during speech recognition generally resulted in larger PPDs as compared to the pre

Listening Effort Is Difficult to Detect in a Person's Voice: Implications for Audiology Evaluations and Conversation Partners.

PURPOSE: Listening can be effortful for a variety of reasons, including when a person misperceives a word in a sentence and then mentally repairs it using later context. The current study explored whether an external observer (in the role of a tester/clinician) could detect that effort by hearing the listener's voice as they repeat the sentence. METHOD: Stimuli were audio recordings of 13 adults with cochlear implants repeating sentences that were either intact or with a masked word that could be inferred/repaired using context (the latter of which were previously documented to elicit greater

The relationship between hearing status, listening effort, and the need for recovery in employees of a manufacturing company.

OBJECTIVE: Hearing screening can be used to detect hearing loss, but its value for identifying employees with work functioning difficulties is unclear. The objective of this study was to assess the association between the hearing status measured with an occupational hearing-in-noise screening test, Listening Effort (LE), and Need For Recovery (NFR) in employees of a manufacturing company, and to examine whether these associations depend on the perceived noise level at the workplace. METHODS: Employees of coatings and paints manufacturing company were included. Their hearing status was assesse

Autonomic Nervous System Responses During Perception of Masked Speech may Reflect Constructs other than Subjective Listening Effort.

Typically, understanding speech seems effortless and automatic. However, a variety of factors may, independently or interactively, make listening more effortful. Physiological measures may help to distinguish between the application of different cognitive mechanisms whose operation is perceived as effortful. In the present study, physiological and behavioral measures associated with task demand were collected along with behavioral measures of performance while participants listened to and repeated sentences. The goal was to measure psychophysiological reactivity associated with three degraded

Effect of speaker age on speech recognition and perceived listening effort in older adults with hearing loss.

PURPOSE: Older adults exhibit difficulty understanding speech that has been experimentally degraded. Age-related changes to the speech mechanism lead to natural degradations in signal quality. We tested the hypothesis that older adults with hearing loss would exhibit declines in speech recognition when listening to the speech of older adults, compared with the speech of younger adults, and would report greater amounts of listening effort in this task. METHOD: Nineteen individuals with age-related hearing loss completed speech recognition and listening effort scaling tasks. Both were conducted

Revisiting Dual-Task Paradigms for Listening Effort: Dual-Task Interference in Adults With and Without Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: In light of concerns about the traditional dual-task approach for behavioral listening effort, this study explored a novel dual-task interference (DTI)-based method in adults with and without hearing loss (HL). METHOD: Fifty-two normal-hearing individuals and 52 with HL were matched for age, sex, and education (M age overall = 67.38 years). The dual-task paradigm combined a primary speech understanding task under five listening conditions with a secondary visual memory task. Dual-task effects (DTEs; performance change from baseline to dual-task) were calculated for both tasks. Linear

Listening Effort in Tinnitus: A Pilot Study Employing a Light EEG Headset and Skin Conductance Assessment during the Listening to a Continuous Speech Stimulus under Different SNR Conditions.

Background noise elicits listening effort. What else is tinnitus if not an endogenous background noise? From such reasoning, we hypothesized the occurrence of increased listening effort in tinnitus patients during listening tasks. Such a hypothesis was tested by investigating some indices of listening effort through electroencephalographic and skin conductance, particularly parietal and frontal alpha and electrodermal activity (EDA). Furthermore, tinnitus distress questionnaires (THI and TQ12-I) were employed. Parietal alpha values were positively correlated to TQ12-I scores, and both were neg

Effect of background noise and memory load on listening effort of young adults with and without hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: People with hearing loss often encounter difficulties in hearing under adverse conditions, such as listening in the presence of noise. Listening effort is an indicator used to assess listening difficulties in daily life. Although many studies on listening effort have been conducted in recent years, there is a notable gap in the exploration of how task load influences listening effort in young adults. This study compared the effects of background noise and memory load on task performance and subjective listening effort in young adults with and without hearing loss. METHODS: The stud

Listener effort quantifies clinically meaningful progression of dysarthria in people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative motor neuron disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. Progressive bulbar dysfunction causes dysarthria and thus social isolation, reducing quality of life. The Everything ALS Speech Study obtained longitudinal clinical information and speech recordings from 292 participants. In a subset of 120 participants, we measured speaking rate (SR) and listener effort (LE), a measure of dysarthria severity rated by speech pathologists from recordings. LE intra- and inter-rater reliability was very high (ICC 0.88 to 0.92). LE correlated wi

Relationships Between Subjective and Objective Measures of Listening Accuracy and Effort in an Online Speech-in-Noise Study.

OBJECTIVES: Speech-in-noise performance is of paramount importance to daily function, and there exists a bewildering array of outcome measures to capture the many dimensions of this concept. The aim of the present study was to provide insight into how different speech-in-noise outcome measures relate to one another, how they behave under different test conditions, and how researchers or practitioners might go about selecting an outcome measure (or measures) depending on the context and focus of their enquiry. DESIGN: An online speech-in-noise study was conducted using the Labvanced experiment

Listening effort among adult cochlear implant users: a protocol for a systematic review and measure-specific meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants (CIs) are the standard of care for profound deafness, yet clinical success is often measured solely by speech recognition scores. These metrics provide an incomplete picture; they indicate what a patient hears but fail to account for the mental workload required to achieve that performance. OBJECTIVE: The primary goal of this meta-analysis is to quantitatively compare the magnitude of listening effort in post-lingually deafened adults using cochlear implants (CIs) versus normal-hearing controls. Secondary goals are to: (1) evaluate within-group CI contrasts under

The Relationship Between Spatial Release From Masking and Listening Effort Among Cochlear Implant Users With Single-Sided Deafness.

OBJECTIVES: To examine speech intelligibility and listening effort in a group of patients with single-sided deafness (SSD) who received a cochlear implant (CI). There is limited knowledge on how effectively SSD-CI users can integrate electric and acoustic inputs to obtain spatial hearing benefits that are important for navigating everyday noisy environments. The present study examined speech intelligibility in quiet and noise simultaneously with measuring listening effort using pupillometry in individuals with SSD before, and 1 year after, CI activation. The study was designed to examine wheth

Listening Effort and Its Relation to Spatial Localization, and Vestibular and Visual Impairment in Usher Syndrome-Our Experience.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Children with hearing loss (HL) could experience significant fatigue which compromises their performance. The effort related to the combination of HL and visual impairment in children affected by Usher syndrome (USH) could compromise mental health, socio-emotional behavior and academic achievement. The aim of the present study was to analyse the listening effort in USH cases types 1 and 2 and its relation to age, molecular diagnosis, visual field, visual acuity, degree of HL, vestibular impairment and spatial orientation. METHODS: This was a retrospective monocentric st

Increased listening effort and cochlear neural degeneration underlie speech-in-noise deficits in normal-hearing middle-aged adults.

Middle age represents a critical period of accelerated brain changes and provides a window for early detection and intervention in age-related neurological decline. Hearing loss is a key early marker of such decline and is linked to numerous comorbidities in older adults. Yet, ~10% of middle-aged individuals who report hearing difficulties show normal audiograms. Cochlear neural degeneration (CND) could contribute to these hidden hearing deficits, though its role remains unclear due to a lack of objective diagnostics and uncertainty regarding its perceptual outcomes. Here, we employed a cross-

Benefit of Higher Maximum Force Output on Listening Effort in Bone-Anchored Hearing System Users: A Pupillometry Study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare listening effort, as estimated via pupillary response, during a speech-in-noise test in bone-anchored hearing system (BAHS) users wearing three different sound processors. The three processors, Ponto Pro (PP), Ponto 3 (P3), and Ponto 3 SuperPower (P3SP), differ in terms of maximum force output (MFO) and MFO algorithm. The hypothesis was that listeners would allocate lower listening effort with the P3SP than with the PP, as a consequence of a higher MFO and, hence, fewer saturation artifacts in the signal. DESIGN: Pupil dilations were recorded i

Perceived valence of ambient odor is associated with listening comprehension and subjective effort but not Fronto-parietal alpha connectivity.

Ambient odors are pervasive features of everyday environments, yet their influence on cognition and its neural mechanisms remains poorly understood. We investigated whether the perceived hedonic valence of an ambient odor modulates comprehension, perceived cognitive effort, and fronto-parietal alpha-band connectivity during a naturalistic listening task. Twenty-one healthy adults were exposed to three ambient odorants (menthol, triethyl citrate, cadaverine), with odor order held constant, while listening to audiobooks, with EEG recorded throughout. After each condition, comprehension and perce
