Effects of sex, litter size and periconceptional ewe nutrition on offspring behavioural and physiological response to isolation.

Maternal periconceptional undernutrition alters fetal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis development. However, the effects of this early nutritional insult on postnatal HPA axis function and stress-related behaviours are unknown. We investigated in sheep the effects of different periods of undernutrition, and of sex and litter size, on offspring behavioural and cortisol responses to isolation stress. We studied four nutritional groups: controls well nourished throughout pregnancy (n=39), or ewes undernourished (UN, 10-15% body weight reduction) before mating (-60 to 0d, n=26), after mat

Effect of litter size on the physical growth and maturation of the offspring of rats given alcohol during gestation.

A study was conducted to determine if retarded postnatal growth and maturation of the offspring of rats receiving alcohol prior to and during gestation could be corrected by adjusting litter size at birth to 3 pups. Female Sprague-Dawley rats (200 to 220 g) were divided into 3 dietary treatment groups. Group 1 (alcohol) was fed ad libitum a stock diet (Purina Rat Chow) plus 20% alcohol in drinking water for at least 4 weeks before mating and 30% alcohol throughout gestation. Group 2 was pair-fed the stock diet and corn starch calorically equivalent to the amount of alcohol consumed. Group 3 (c

Is serum AMH a suitable biomarker to determine litter size or fetal sex in goats?: A preliminary study.

This study was conducted in Damascus goats to i) investigate the relationship between serum AMH concentrations and litter size, ii) evaluate the change in serum AMH concentration between the 35th and 135th days of pregnancy, iii) determine whether fetal sex affected the maternal AMH level. Estrus was synchronized in 110 goats (intravaginal sponge containing medroxyprogesterone acetate for nine days, combined with d-cloprostenol and Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin at sponge removal). Blood samples were taken on the 4th and 9th days of synchronization. Goats at estrus were mated naturally. Stud

Reproductive performance in a diallel cross among lines of mice selected for litter size and body weight.

Genetic factors affecting female reproductive performance in lines of mice with a known history of selection were estimated from a 5 X 5 diallel cross. Lines were selected as follows: large litter size at birth (L+); large 6-wk body weight (W+); an index for large litter size and small 6-wk body weight (L+W-); the complementary index (L-W+) and randomly (K). Partitioning of direct and correlated responses for litter size, 6-wk body weight and related traits into average direct genetic (li) and average maternal genetic (mi) effects indicated that the magnitude of differences in li exceeded thos

Separating maternal and litter-size effects on early postnatal growth in two species of altricial small mammals.

Growth during an animal's early ontogeny can have important consequences for its health, reproduction and survival during later life. We studied pre-weaning growth rates of two species of small altricial mammals, and assessed the impact and compared the importance of two main aspects of the animals' early environment: maternal characteristics and the number of litter siblings (i.e. litter size). Study animals were wild-type European rabbits living in a field enclosure and laboratory rats kept under standardized housing conditions. Growth of rabbit pups was best explained (to 47%) by the combin

Quantifying genetic load through joint modelling of inbreeding depression and inbreeding load for litter size in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Genetic load, defined as the burden of deleterious variants carried by a population, has two components: a realized one that is expressed as reduced fitness, and a hidden one that is masked in heterozygotes. The hidden component, arising from recessive (or partially recessive) deleterious alleles and from overdominant loci, constitutes the inbreeding load (IL), which is unmasked under inbreeding and observed as inbreeding depression. Conventional analyses focus on average inbreeding depression and assume homogeneous effects across ancestors. In contrast, the IL framework allows het

Expression and Polymorphisms of SMAD1, SMAD2 and SMAD3 Genes and Their Association with Litter Size in Tibetan Sheep (Ovis aries).

SMAD1, SMAD2, and SMAD3 are important transcription factors downstream of the TGF-β/SMAD signaling pathway that mediates several physiological processes. In the current study, we used cloning sequencing, RT-qPCR, bioinformatics methods and iMLDR technology to clone the coding region of Tibetan sheep genes, analyze the protein structure and detect the tissue expression characteristics of Tibetan sheep genes, and detect the polymorphisms of 433 Tibetan sheep and analyze their correlation with litter size. The results showed that the ORFs of the SMAD1, SMAD2 and SMAD3 genes were 1398 bp, 1404 bp

Quantitative proteomic analysis was performed to evaluate the protein expression levels in the ovaries of goats with different litter sizes.

BACKGROUND: The litter size of goats is a key factor affecting their reproductive performance. The ovary plays a central role in the reproductive process of goats. However, the relationship between the dynamic changes in the ovarian proteome and the prolific traits of goats remains unclear. The Jining Grey Goat, an excellent dual-purpose meat and skin breed in China, is famous for its distinctive coat color characteristics and high reproductive performance. METHODS: It is an ideal animal model for studying goat reproductive performance. We selected 8 Jining Grey Goats and divided them into a

Investigation of Copy Number Variations (CNVs) of the Goat PPP3CA Gene and Their Effect on Litter Size and Semen Quality.

Copy number variations (CNVs) have many forms of variation structure, and they play an important role in the research of variety diversity, biological evolution and disease correlation. Since CNVs have a greater impact on gene regulation and expression, more studies are being finalized on CNVs in important livestock and poultry species. The protein phosphatase 3 catalytic subunit alpha (PPP3CA) is a key candidate gene involved in the goat fecundity trait, and has important effects on precocious puberty, estrogen signal transduction pathways and oocyte meiosis. Additionally, PPP3CA also has a d

Litter Size Reduction as a Model of Overfeeding during Lactation and Its Consequences for the Development of Metabolic Diseases in the Offspring.

Overfeeding during lactation has a deleterious impact on the baby's health throughout life. In humans, early overnutrition has been associated with higher susceptibility to obesity and metabolic disorders in childhood and adulthood. In rodents, using a rodent litter size reduction model (small litter) to mimic early overfeeding, the same metabolic profile has been described. Therefore, the rodent small litter model is an efficient tool to investigate the adaptive mechanisms involved in obesogenesis. Besides central and metabolic dysfunctions, studies have pointed to the contribution of the end

The effects of long- or short-term increased feed allowance prior to first service on litter size in gilts.

Replacing stock is costly in any pig production. In addition, it takes time for young animals to reach the same level of productivity as more mature animals. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of long- or short-term increased feed allowance (covering the luteal and follicular phases) prior to service in the second estrus on first parity performance. In order to achieve this, altrenogest was used to synchronize the gilts cycle to allow a precise feeding strategy, and only gilts inseminated 0-10 d after altrenogest withdrawal were included in the study. Altrenogest w

Separation stress, litter size, and the rewarding effects of low-dose morphine in the dams of maternally separated rats.

Potential differences in sensitivity to the rewarding effects of morphine as a function of litter separation stress were assessed in post-weaning rat dams. During the first two weeks postnatal, Sprague-Dawley rat litters were subjected to daily 15- or 180-min sessions of dam-pup separation while control litters only experienced twice-weekly animal facility care. One week after weaning, the dams (n=7 per group) underwent a fully unbiased conditioned place preference (CPP) procedure to 1 mg/kg subcutaneous morphine. CPP responses after each conditioning cycle were recorded. Rates of acquisition

Simultaneous detection of malignant hyperthermia and genetic predisposition for improved litter size in pigs by multiplex PCR-RFLP.

The ryanodine receptor gene (RYR1) and the estrogen receptor gene (ESR) are the best commercially used markers for predisposition of stress susceptibility (malignant hyperthermia--MH) and increased litter size, respectively. A simplified method of simultaneous detection of MH and ESR genotypes has been developed. The method is based on simultaneous amplification of fragments of two genes by multiplex PCR and subsequent digestion of the products with two restriction enzymes. The PCR and the digestion could be performed in a single tube and all genotypes could be detected by electrophoretic sepa

Efficiency of drag sampling for estimating population sizes of Ixodes pacificus (Acari: Ixodidae) nymphs in leaf litter.

Drag sampling is a commonly used method to obtain relative estimates of the density of questing nymphal Ixodes scapularis Say and I pacificus Cooley & Kohls ticks, which are primary vectors of Lyme disease spirochetes to humans in North America. However, the efficiency of drag sampling in determining absolute population densities of questing nymphs has not been evaluated previously. Therefore, we assessed the efficiency of a single drag-sampling occasion to estimate the total population size of questing I pacificus nymphs in a leaf-litter habitat in California. Repeated daily removal sampling

Metabolic imprinting due to small litter size preserves gut microbiota diversity and SCFA output despite high-sucrose diet.

According to the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD), early-life nutritional exposure can affect long-term metabolic health. Gut microbiota development during lactation plays a pivotal role in regulating metabolism, with short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) serving as key mediators connecting early microbial colonization to future metabolic outcomes. Diet composition strongly affects gut microbiome, and high-sucrose diets (HSD) promote dysbiosis and metabolic dysfunction. We investigated whether small litter size (SL) modulates susceptibility to HSD-induced metabolic disruptions by

TRIXcell+, a new long-term boar semen extender containing whey protein with higher preservation capacity and litter size.

It was the aim of the present study to test whey as protective protein for the sperm cell in the long-term boar semen preservation medium TRIXcell. Analyses of sperm cell motility using computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA) indicated that the whey protein Porex has a similar protective effect as bovine serum albumin (BSA) in maintaining viability of stored boar sperm. Boar sperm diluted in TRIXcell+ maintains commercially acceptable motility (>60%) for 10 days, while swine sperm diluted in the semen preservation medium Beltsville Thawing Solution (BTS) maintains commercially acceptable motil

Disentangling Litter Size and Farrowing Duration Effects on Piglet Stillbirth, Acid-Base Blood Parameters and Pre-Weaning Mortality.

The current study evaluated interactions between farrowing duration and litter size on the level of asphyxia, vitality, percentage of stillbirth, and pre-weaning mortality of piglets. Farrowing duration was measured in 159 crossbred gilts and sows (Yorkshire × Dutch Landrace). Litter size ranged between 12 and 21 piglets. Blood acid-base parameters in umbilical cord blood and vitality scores of piglets were determined immediately after birth. Number of piglets born alive and stillborn as well as individual piglet weights at birth were recorded. Pre-weaning mortality (excluding stillbirth) was

Improving litter size by boar spermatozoa: application of combined H33258/CTC staining in field trial with artificial insemination.

Conventional semen analysis offers basic information on infertility; however, its clinical value in predicting fertility status is unclear. To establish an accurate diagnosis of male fertility, semen analysis under capacitation condition is necessary because only capacitated spermatozoa are capable of fertilizing oocytes. The objective of this study was to verify male fertility based on conventional semen analysis before and after capacitation, including the assessment of motility (%), motion kinematics, and capacitation status of spermatozoa.
