Two analytic traditions characterize fMRI language research. One relies on averaging activations across individuals. This approach has limitations: because of inter-individual variability in the locations of language areas, any given voxel/vertex in a common brain space is part of the language network in some individuals but in others, may belong to a distinct network. An alternative approach relies on identifying language areas in each individual using a functional 'localizer'. Because of its greater sensitivity, functional resolution, and interpretability, functional localization is gaining

OBJECTIVE: It is debated whether higher-order functional impairment during high-frequency electrical cortical stimulation (HF-ECS) results from local cortical disruption or global network failure. Intrastimulus discharge (ISD) has been proposed as a possible marker of network disturbance, but its functional significance remains uncertain. We investigated the relationship between ISDs and negative motor symptoms in the negative motor area (NMA), a higher-order motor area where electrical stimulation inhibits voluntary movement. We hypothesized that negative motor symptoms emerge following ISDs

Brain function relies on efficient communications between distinct brain systems. The pathology of major depressive disorder (MDD) damages functional brain networks, resulting in cognitive impairment. Here, we reviewed the associations between brain functional connectome changes and MDD pathogenesis. We also highlighted the utility of brain functional connectome for differentiating MDD from other similar psychiatric disorders, predicting recurrence and suicide attempts in MDD, and evaluating treatment responses. Converging evidence has now linked aberrant brain functional network organization

The properties of mutualistic networks may vary depending on the habitat structure in which partners interact. In this research, we evaluated two plant-bird frugivorous networks from the South Brazilian Atlantic Forest (Araucaria Forest) and tested how different past disturbance history and present successional stage can influence the structure of these networks. We sampled six secondary forest sites within a protected area in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil-three in early succession following clear-cutting (CC), and three in late succession following selective logging (SL), all with similar disturb

AIM: This study investigates the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on brain network connectivity in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
METHODS: In a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled experimental design anodal tDCS (vs. sham) was applied in a total of 43 right-handed patients with OCD, targeting the right pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA). Cathodal reference electrode was put on the left pre-SMA. The current was set as 2 mA, with a stimulation duration of either 30 s (sham) or 1200 s. Concurrent resting-state functional MRI data were col

Effective measures to improve road accessibility during storms are required as traffic congestion caused by storm floods increasingly constrains the efficiency of urban commuting. However, flood impacts on urban road connectivity are not yet well assessed due to inaccurate simulation of flood processes in urban areas where high-resolution data for drainage networks and gauged hydrological data are insufficient. Thus, this study assesses flood impacts on road network connectivity in an urban area of southern China through joint modeling of 1-D hydrodynamic processes in drainage networks and 2-D

The left ventral occipito-temporal cortex (left-vOT) plays a key role in reading. Interestingly, the area also responds to speech input, suggesting that it may have other functions beyond written word recognition. Here, we adopt graph theoretical analysis to investigate the left-vOT's functional role in the whole-brain network while participants process spoken sentences in different contexts. Overall, different connectivity measures indicate that the left-vOT acts as an interface enabling the communication between distributed brain regions and sub-networks. During simple speech perception, the

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal and dynamic epileptogenic networks cause difficulties for clinical epileptologists in the localization of the seizure onset zone (SOZ) and the epileptogenic zone (EZ) in preoperative assessments of patients with refractory epilepsy. The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics of time-varying effective connectivity networks in various non-seizure and seizure periods, and to propose a quantitative approach for accurate localization of SOZ and EZ.
METHODS: We used electrocorticogram recordings in the temporal lobe and hippocampus from seven patients with tempo

BACKGROUND: Postmortem studies of Alzheimer's disease (AD) brains not only find amyloid-β (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) in the primary and associative visual cortical areas, but also reveal a temporally successive sequence of AD pathology beginning in higher-order visual association areas, followed by involvement of lower-order visual processing regions with disease progression, and extending to primary visual cortex in late-stage disease. These findings suggest that neuronal loss associated with Aβ and NFT aggregation in these areas may alter not only the local neuronal activation bu

To investigate the reorganization of functional brain network following amputation, twenty-two right-hand amputees and twenty-four age- and education-matched controls participated in a resting-state EEG study. EEG networks in alpha and beta bands were constructed using phase synchronization. Both global and local network parameters were compared between amputees and healthy controls. In the aspect of global connectivity, amputees showed increased clustering coefficient (C), decreased characteristic path length (L) and increased small worldness (S) in alpha band, and an increase of L in beta ba

Goal-directed behavior has been shown to be affected by consciously and subliminally induced conflicts. Both types of conflict conjointly modulate behavioral performance, but the underlying neuronal mechanisms have remained unclear. While cognitive control is linked to oscillations in the theta frequency band, there are several mechanisms via which theta oscillations may enable cognitive control: via the coordination and synchronization of a large and complex neuronal network and/or via local processes within the medial frontal cortex. We, therefore, investigated this issue with a focus on the

This study used Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to investigate changes in brain structure and networks functional connectivity, respectively. We tried to identify the potential biomarkers in Parkinson's disease (PD) progression. We recruited nine idiopathic PD patients and seven healthy control participants (HC group) who were age-matched to undergo T1-weighted images and rs-fMRI on 1.5 T. Brain structure differences were analyzed by VBM. Topological properties of networks functional connectivity were analyzed by graph theory. Thi

There is increasing interest in how the phase of local oscillatory activity within a brain area determines the long-range functional connectivity of that area. For example, increasing convergent evidence from a range of methodologies suggests that beta (20 Hz) oscillations may play a vital role in the function of the motor system [1-5]. The "communication through coherence" hypothesis posits that the precise phase of coherent oscillations in network nodes is a determinant of successful communication between them [6, 7]. Here we set out to determine whether oscillatory activity in the beta band

The rising prevalence of Parkinson's disease has created an urgent need for brain activity markers guiding diagnosis and treatment strategies. While abnormal basal ganglia activity is known to synchronise with specific cortical regions, the temporal dynamics and cortical network architecture of this coupling remain unclear. To address this, we analysed simultaneous magnetoencephalography and subthalamic nucleus (STN) local field potential recordings from 27 individuals with Parkinson's disease, both on and off dopaminergic medication. Using a time-delay embedded Hidden Markov Model, we identif

We evaluated the putative factors for the onset of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) in Harbin, China by a case-control study based on the information from GBS patients identified from a population-based incidence survey, which is the first study of this kind in China. Sixty-nine GBS patients were identified during a 1-year period from 1 October 1997 to 30 September 1998, and they were matched with 69 controls for gender and age (+/-5 years). GBS diagnosis was validated by senior neurologists and GBS patients were followed up for 6 months after onset. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (

Delays in identifying and treating individuals with infectious tuberculosis (TB) contribute to poor health outcomes and allow ongoing community transmission of M. tuberculosis (Mtb). Current recommendations for screening for tuberculosis specify community characteristics (e.g., areas with high local tuberculosis prevalence) that can be used to target screening within the general population. However, areas of higher tuberculosis burden are not necessarily areas with higher rates of transmission. We investigated the transmission of Mtb using high-resolution surveillance data in Blantyre, Malawi.

Thalamic aphasia results from focal thalamic lesions that cause dysfunction of remote but functionally connected cortical areas due to language network perturbation. However, specific local and network-level neural substrates of thalamic aphasia remain incompletely understood. Using lesion symptom mapping, we demonstrate that lesions in the left ventrolateral and ventral anterior thalamic nucleus are most strongly associated with aphasia in general and with impaired semantic and phonemic fluency and complex comprehension in particular. Lesion network mapping (using a normative connectome based

Parkinson's disease (PD) patients have difficulty in initiating movements. Previous studies have suggested that the abnormal brain activity may happen not only during performance of self-initiated movements but also in the before movement (baseline or resting) state. In the current study, we investigated the functional connectivity of brain networks in the resting state in PD. We chose the rostral supplementary motor area (pre-SMA) and bilateral primary motor cortex (M1) as "seed" regions, because the pre-SMA is important in motor preparation, whereas the M1 is critical in motor execution. OBJECTIVE: Interictal synchronization clusters have recently been described in several publications using diverse techniques, including neurophysiological recordings and fMRI, in patients suffering from epilepsy. However, little is known about the role of these hyper-synchronous areas during seizures. In this work, we report an analysis of synchronization clusters jointly with several network measures during seizure activity; we then discuss our findings in the context of prior literature.

We report the reconstruction of the urethral fistula using a scrotal septocutaneous island flap. A scrotal septocutaneous island flap is supplied by vascular networks in the scrotal septum area from both perineal arteries and posterior scrotal arteries. This flap is divided into two flaps, one for urethral lining and the other for the skin defect. We found it to be a simple, useful, and reliable alternative to other local flaps. However, hairless skin of the scrotum must be used for the urethral lining. The musculocutaneous flap is also reliable. However, use of the scrotal septocutaneous isla
