[Locomotive syndrome and frailty. Frail elderly].

Frailty is a concept born in the mid 1980s, toward which a disease-oriented approach has turned to functional assessment. The domain of frailty contains the weakness of muscle strength, mental problems and social solitude. Fall is a good clinical indicator for the weakness of muscle strength as well as neuro-mental problems. Two topics in this review are; (1) Sex difference of hip fracture in relation with the sex difference of fall risks. Especially I will focus on the postural changes with osteoporosis as risks for falls. (2) Multiple geriatric conditions and brain white matter lesion. These

Estrogen and bone--a reproductive and locomotive perspective.

UNLABELLED: The primary function of the skeleton is locomotion, and the primary function of estrogen is reproduction. When the skeleton is considered within this locomotive context, the onset of estrogen secretion at puberty leads to packing of mechanically excess mineral into female bones for reproductive needs. Accordingly, the unpacking of this reproductive safety deposit at menopause denotes the origin of type I osteoporosis. INTRODUCTION: According to the prevailing unitary model of involutional osteoporosis, female postmenopausal bone loss can be described as having an initial accelerat

Veering in human locomotion: the role of the effectors.

Without visual information, human subjects are not able to maintain displacement in a straight line. This tendency is called veering. The goal of this paper was to investigate the origin of veering in a population of subjects who were homotropic during walking (i.e. veering consistently in the same direction on repeated trials). Three types of locomotion were compared, each one required a specific set of effectors: (i) walking (LEG); (ii) propelling on a wheelchair (ARM) and (iii) verbally ordering a second person pushing the wheelchair (VERB). After 15 m displacement, all subjects (n = 8) exh

[Apraxia of gait and disorders in posture and locomotion].

Apraxia of gait is a unique disorder of locomotion characterized by inability in lifting the feet from the floor despite alternating stepping action (frozen gait), and disequilibrium. Responsible site of lesions are in the frontal lobe and/or the basal ganglia. It is observed in an advanced stage of Parkinson's (PD) or vascular parkinsonism with multiple cerebral infarction (MCI). Studies on equilibrium and natural gait have disclosed unique features in this condition. Records of floor reaction forces in forward locomotion showed that vertical-foreaft vector angles at kick-off phase is small i

Reverse-engineering the locomotion of a stem amniote.

Reconstructing the locomotion of extinct vertebrates offers insights into their palaeobiology and helps to conceptualize major transitions in vertebrate evolution1-4. However, estimating the locomotor behaviour of a fossil species remains a challenge because of the limited information preserved and the lack of a direct correspondence between form and function5,6. The evolution of advanced locomotion on land-that is, locomotion that is more erect, balanced and mechanically power-saving than is assumed of anamniote early tetrapods-has previously been linked to the terrestrialization and diversif

Epidemiologic survey of locomotive syndrome in Japan.

BACKGROUND: The authors have developed a screening tool, the 25-Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale (GLFS-25), for the early detection of locomotive syndrome (LS). However, few studies have examined the prevalence of LS in the general population. This study estimated the prevalence of LS in Japan using the GLSF-25 and investigated age specific mean values for this scale. METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted to reveal standard values for the GLFS-25 and to estimate the total number of individuals with LS in Japan. Subjects were individuals selected from resi

Forward and backward locomotion in individuals with dizziness.

The vestibular system plays an important role in locomotion. Individuals with vestibular pathology present with gait abnormalities, which may increase their fall frequency. Backward walking (BW) has been suggested as a predictor of falls in other patient populations; however it has not been studied in individuals with dizziness. Our aims were: (1) to investigate the differences in forward walking (FW) and BW both between and within 3 groups: Healthy controls, individuals with dizziness and vestibular pathology, and individuals with dizziness without vestibular pathology, (2) describe differenc

Concurrent measures of feeding and locomotion in rats.

Psychostimulants including amphetamine and cocaine induce locomotion and stereotypy and suppress eating. Studies of the biobehavioral actions of psychostimulants commonly focus on locomotion and less commonly on feeding, and only rarely are these measures considered in conjunction within the same animal. Inasmuch as hyperactivity induced by a psychostimulant may compete with other motor behaviors, including eating, it would be important to concurrently assess changes in eating and locomotion after psychostimulant treatment. The present paper describes a modification of an automated activity ch

The effect of reins on kinetic variables of locomotion.

The equestrian literature and reports of experienced riders indicated that attitude of a horse's head and neck is related to the equine locomotion characteristics. The purpose of this study was to quantify the effects of 3 types of reins on locomotion at walk and trot. Eight saddle horses were tested in an automatic walker without reins, with rubber bands, Chambons and Back lift, using the same procedure. The rubber bands closed the head-neck angle, whereas the Chambons and the Back lift opened it. The gait characteristics were measured with the Equimetrix gait analysis system. Two acceleromet

Breathing and locomotion in patients with Parkinson's disease.

The phase relationship between respiration and locomotion was examined in ten patients with Parkinson's disease (PD, mean age 65, range 51-79 years) and in six healthy subjects (mean age 63, range 58-68 years). Locomotion was measured by means of pressure sensors attached below the subjects' feet. Respiration was measured using respiratory inductive plethysmography. The data were recorded with a battery-driven portable device. We determined the coordination degree as the portion of steps which occurred within 12/50 bins of the respiratory cycle. The mean degree of coordination of PD patients w

Snowmobile driving and symptoms of the locomotive organs.

The role of snowmobile driving as a factor in symptoms of the locomotive organs was examined in 1,793 reindeer herding men using a postal questionnaire. Thirty-eight % of the respondents reported troubles in the upper limbs and shoulders which according to their own judgement were caused by snowmobile driving, and 34% reported such symptoms in the knees and 42% in the back. Aching, pain or tenderness upon movement in at least one joint during the current year, inquired by independent questions, were reported by 46% of the men. The prevalence of joint symptoms felt in the elbow (reported by 15%

[Control of gaze and locomotion by spatial orientation].

We reported a new theory for daily vestibular functions which advocates top-down regulation of posture and gaze by supposing the coordinates in the brain. The hypothesis consists of three principles; first, the vestibular system is primarily a sensory system to detect spatial orientation; second, multisensory integrations reconstruct three-dimensional coordinates in the brain, which ascertain spatial orientation; third, daily behaviours like gazing or walking are controlled in a feed-forward manner by programming on the coordinates in the brain. The hypothesis was useful to understand strategi

Cognitive demands of bipedal locomotion during human foraging.

Human foraging requires cognitive and physical demands that influence each other. These demands include challenges of staying upright while walking bipedally in complex environments, along with other cognitive tasks (e.g. navigation, executive functions). The combination of cognition and movement is known as cognitive-motor dual-tasks, which can result in declines in performance. However, the influence of cognitive-motor dual-tasks has not been observed in ecologically relevant settings. By using a laboratory-based experiment with 45 healthy participants, as well as observations from foraging

Miniature deep-sea morphable robot with multimodal locomotion.

Research on miniature deep-sea robots is an emerging field focused on the development of deployable, compact devices capable of interacting with the unique environments and organisms of the deep ocean. In this study, we present a design strategy for a centimeter-scale deep-sea soft actuator, weighing 16 grams, that incorporates bistable chiral metamaterials and tube-sealed shape memory alloys. According to our design, the increased modulus induced by the hydrostatic pressure was used to achieve a higher snapping velocity of the bistable chiral unit, thus lifting the actuator's performance. Movement-related increases in subthalamic activity optimize locomotion.

The subthalamic nucleus (STN) is traditionally thought to restrict movement. Lesion or prolonged STN inhibition increases movement vigor and propensity, while optogenetic excitation has opposing effects. However, STN neurons often exhibit movement-related increases in firing. To address this paradox, STN activity was recorded and manipulated in head-fixed mice at rest and during self-initiated and self-paced treadmill locomotion. We found that (1) most STN neurons (type 1) exhibit locomotion-dependent increases in activity, with half firing preferentially during the propulsive phase of the con

The accuracy of object motion perception during locomotion.

Human observers are capable of perceiving the motion of moving objects relative to the stationary world, even while undergoing self-motion. Perceiving world-relative object motion is complicated because the local optical motion of objects is influenced by both observer and object motion, and reflects object motion in observer coordinates. It has been proposed that observers recover world-relative object motion using global optic flow to factor out the influence of self-motion. However, object-motion judgments during simulated self-motion are biased, as if the visual system cannot completely co

Intentional Head-Motion Assisted Locomotion for Reducing Cybersickness.

We present an efficient locomotion technique that can reduce cybersickness through aligning the visual and vestibular induced self-motion illusion. Our locomotion technique stimulates proprioception consistent with the visual sense by intentional head motion, which includes both the head's translational movement and yaw rotation. A locomotion event is triggered by the hand-held controller together with an intended physical head motion simultaneously. Based on our method, we further explore the connections between the level of cybersickness and the velocity of self motion through a series of ex

Next-generation ingestible devices: sensing, locomotion and navigation.

There is significant interest in exploring the human body's internal activities and measuring important parameters to understand, treat and diagnose the digestive system environment and related diseases. Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) is widely used for gastrointestinal (GI) tract exploration due to its effectiveness as it provides no pain and is totally tolerated by the patient. Current ingestible sensing technology provides a valuable diagnostic tool to establish a platform for monitoring the physiological and biological activities inside the human body. It is also used for visualizing the

Many studies require the ability to quantify locomotor behavior over time. The list of tracking softwares and their capabilities are constantly growing. At the 2019 CanFly Conference, we presented preliminary results from an investigation of the effects of expressing polyglutamine repeats in fly muscles on longevity, locomotion, and protein aggregation. Numerous requests have been received regarding our protocol to measure locomotion and how to use the FlyTracker MatLab software.
