Fine-Mapping and Comparative Genomic Analysis Reveal the Gene Composition at the S and Z Self-incompatibility Loci in Grasses.

Self-incompatibility (SI) is a genetic mechanism of hermaphroditic plants to prevent inbreeding after self-pollination. Allogamous Poaceae species exhibit a unique gametophytic SI system controlled by two multi-allelic and independent loci, S and Z. Despite intense research efforts in the last decades, the genes that determine the initial recognition mechanism are yet to be identified. Here, we report the fine-mapping of the Z-locus in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and provide evidence that the pollen and stigma components are determined by two genes encoding DUF247 domain proteins (Z

Can permanent grassland soils with elevated organic carbon buffer negative effects of more persistent precipitation regimes on forage grass performance?

Agricultural practices enhancing soil organic carbon (SOC) show potential to buffer negative effects of climate change on forage grass performance. We tested this by subjecting five forage grass varieties differing in fodder quality and drought/flooding resistance to increased persistence in summer precipitation regimes (PR) across sandy and sandy-loam soils from either permanent (high SOC) or temporary grasslands (low SOC) in adjacent parcels. Over the course of two consecutive summers, monoculture mesocosms were subjected to rainy/dry weather alternation either every 3 days or every 30 days,

Effect of different pasture species on welfare and behavior of slow-growing broiler chickens in free-range production system.

This study investigated the effect of various pasture species on the welfare and behavior of slow-growing broiler chickens in the free-range production system. After 21 days completely indoors, the birds were permitted access to outdoor pens cultivated with one of the following pasture treatments: Medicago sativa (A), Trifolium repens (WC), Lolium perenne (PR), and a mixture (Mix, A + WC + PR). The range availability was restricted between 08:30 and 16:30 daily. It was found that pasture type had a significant effect on the fluctuating asymmetry of the face and radius length (P < 0.01). [Regulation and Mechanism of a Dregs Biochar Matrix Combined with Maifanite on a Soil-Ryegrass System].

An indoor pot experiment and isothermal adsorption experiment were used to examine the regulation of soil-ryegrass system treatments. For the treatments, Banlangen dregs were selected as a raw material alongside two kinds of biochar (BC300, BC500) prepared by pyrolysis at 300℃ and 500℃ under anoxic conditions. Fe was modified by BC500 (Fe-BC500), which was then combined with maifanite (MFS) as a passivating agent[BC500:MFS (1:1) and Fe-BC500:MFS (1:1)]. Surface pore distribution (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTI

Changes in the bacterial community and composition of fermentation products during ensiling of wilted Italian ryegrass and wilted guinea grass silages.

To gain further insights into temperate and tropical grass ensiling, fermentation products and bacterial communities were examined at both the initial and late stages of ensiling of wilted Italian ryegrass and wilted guinea grass silages. 2,3-Butanediol and ethanol fermentation were observed in wilted Italian ryegrass silage. Enterobacteria such as Rahnella sp. and Enterobacter sp. may have been involved in fermentation; however, alcohol production was intensified after the silage enterobacterial community overwhelmed the pre-ensiled enterobacterial community. Pediococcus spp. appeared in sila

Impact of atmospheric electrical charges on ryegrass pollen rupture and sub-pollen particle release.

Thunderstorm asthma (TA) is a significant health concern, recorded in 26 instances globally, primarily linked to ryegrass pollen. Existing research has shown that physical forces such as wind and rain can cause pollen to rupture during thunderstorms, creating micronic, inhalable allergen-rich fragments called sub-pollen particles (SPPs). However, little is known about the role of electrical charges in storm clouds, such as those associated with lightning, in triggering pollen rupture. This study presents the first simulation-based evidence that the static electric fields typical of storm cloud

Biochar amendment before or after composting affects compost quality and N losses, but not P plant uptake.

We investigated the use of biochar (10% on a dry weight basis) to improve the composting process and/or the compost quality by adding it to either the feedstock mixture or the mature compost. The addition of biochar to the feedstocks was essayed in a full scale trial using a mixture of green waste and the organic fraction of municipal solid waste. Addition of biochar to mature compost was performed in a medium scale experiment. The use of biochar, even in small amounts, changed the composting process and the properties of the end products. However these effects depended on the time of applicat

[Is it necessary to test children having summer respiratory problems with cereal pollens?].

We tested 100 children with clinical signs that occurred in spring or summer. Prick tests were made with extracts of wild grass pollens (Dactylis, Phleum, Lolium) and with separate cereal pollens (Wheat, oats, Sweet-corn Barley and Rye). In 20 children whose test was negative for wild grass pollen, we saw no sensitization to cereals. In 80 children with grass pollenosis, Barley and Rye are the cereals that gave the most positive prick tests, whilst sweet corn is the cereal with most negative tests.

Heavy Metal Uptake of Lettuce and Ryegrass from Urban Waste Composts.

Interest in using urban waste composts as amendments in urban agriculture is growing nowadays. However, concerns about the potential transference of pollutants present in urban waste to the food chain are very relevant when they are recycled for food or animal feed production. Thus, for the safe use of urban waste composts, it has to be assured that no risk of metal transference to plants from compost exists. In this work, the transference of heavy metals from urban waste composts to plants has been studied in an experiment with lettuce and Italian ryegrass, grown in substrates based on five m

Disease epidemics and species interactions: A manipulation of seasonal establishment of fungal diseases in an old field.

Many disease epidemics recur seasonally, and such seasonal epidemics can be shaped by species interactions among parasites, pathogens, or other microbes. Field experiments are a classic approach for understanding species interactions but are rarely used to study seasonal epidemics. Our research objective was to help fill this gap by manipulating the seasonal timing of the establishment of infectious diseases while tracking epidemics and other ecological responses. To do this, we conducted a multiyear field experiment in an old field in the Piedmont of North Carolina, USA, dominated by the gras

Major Components of Dittrichia viscosa (Asteraceae) as a Source of New Pesticides.

Ilicic acid, nerolidol, and 9-hydroxynerolidol are major components of the aerial parts of Dittrichia viscosa. These components were selectively isolated in multigram quantities and used as lead compounds to generate diversity in the search for new natural-product-derived pesticides. A total of 29 derivatives of these three molecules-some of which are known natural products-were generated by subjecting these natural products to different transformations. In order to explore potential applications in sustainable biocontrol, some of the compounds generated were evaluated for plant protection pot

Effect of citric acid and biochar addition on combined remediation of ryegrass-Streptomyces spp.

Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination poses significant risks to ecosystems and human health, necessitating effective remediation strategies. Plant-microbe combined remediation has shown promise, but its efficiency can be further enhanced by amendments such as citric acid and biochar. This study investigated the effects of citric acid and biochar on the potential of ryegrass (Lolium perenne)-Streptomyces combined remediation for Cd-contaminated soil. A pot experiment was conducted to determine: (1) soil Cd concentration and speciation, (2) plant biomass and Cd uptake in shoots/roots, and (3) antioxi

Greenhouse evaluation of struvite and sludges from municipal wastewater treatment works as phosphorus sources for plants.

Sewage sludge obtained by a conventional aerobic activated sludge process (CSS), P-rich sewage sludge from an enhanced biological P removal process (PRS), and struvite (MgNH 4PO 4 x 6H 2O) recovered from an anaerobic digester supernatant using a low-grade MgO byproduct from the calcination of natural magnesite as a Mg source (STR) were evaluated as P sources for plant growth. For this purpose, a greenhouse pot experiment was conducted using a P-deficient loamy sand soil and perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) as the test crop. The P sources were applied at rates equivalent to 0, 9, 17, 26,

Agricultural use of municipal wastewater sludges: phosphorus availability of biological excess phosphorus removal sludges.

Reuse of sewage sludges as phosphorus fertiliser requires the estimation of the plant availabilities of phosphorus (P) from different sludges. This study investigates the effect of lime stabilisation on the phosphorus availability from biological phosphorus removal sludges. In the first part of the study, pot experiments were carried out to assess the fertilising effect of a dewatered biological phosphorus removal sludge. Availability of P was determined in terms of plant-uptake. In the second part of the study, incubation tests were carried out to observe the change in the available P with ti

Soil moisture dynamics, fertiliser timing and fertiliser nitrogen form (nitrate: ammonium ratio) drive nitrous oxide (N2O) emission patterns in a temperate grassland.

Although both straight N and NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) compound fertilisers are widely used, the influence of nitrate (NO3--N) to ammonium (NH4+-N) ratios in these fertilisers on nitrous oxide (N2O) emission dynamics remains poorly quantified. This study examined how fertilisers with contrasting NO3--N to NH4+-N ratios influence N2O emissions under varying environmental conditions, over a growing year in an Irish grassland soil. A randomised block field experiment was conducted on a moderately drained luvisol with a perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) sward. Fertilisers with varyin

Structure-activity relationship of the aromatic moiety of 6-substituted 5,6-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-one to find the novel compound showing higher plant growth inhibitory activity.

In the course of our research on the structure-activity relationship of 5,6-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-one, (S)-6-[(R)-2-hydroxy-6-(4-fluorophenyl)hexyl]-5,6-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-one was found to show 2-3-fold more potent plant growth inhibitory activity against Italian ryegrass shoots (IC50 = 95 µm) and roots (IC50 = 17 µm) than compound bearing unsubstituted phenyl group. The small and electron withdrawing atom at 4-position of the benzene ring caused the higher activity.

Behavioral and Physiological Alterations in Angus Steers Grazing Endophyte-Infected Toxic Fescue during Late Fall.

Fescue toxicosis is caused by grazing ergot alkaloid-producing endophyte (Epichloë coenophiala)-infected tall fescue (E+). Summer grazing of E+ leads to decreased productivity, associated impaired thermoregulation, and altered behavior. The goal of this study was to determine the role of E+ grazing-climate interaction on animal behavior and thermoregulation during late fall. Eighteen Angus steers were placed on nontoxic (NT), toxic (E+) and endophyte-free (E-) fescue pastures for 28 days. Physiological parameters, such as rectal temperature (RT), respiration rate (RR), ear and ankle surface te

Transcriptome analysis of Epichloë strains in tall fescue in response to drought stress.

Epichloë coenophiala, a systemic fungal symbiont (endophyte) of tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum), has been documented to confer to this grass better persistence than plants lacking the endophyte, especially under stress conditions such as drought. The response, if any, of the endophyte to imposition of stress on the host plant has not been characterized previously. Therefore, we investigated effects on gene expression by E. coenophiala and a related endophyte when plant-endophyte symbiota were subjected to acute water-deficit stress. Plants harboring different endophyte strains were grown in

Cadmium Uptake by Ryegrass and Ryegrass-Clover Mixtures under Different Liming Rates.

Cadmium accumulates in soils that receive repeated applications of Cd-rich superphosphate fertilizers. There is evidence that adding clovers to a crop solubilizes soil Cd, increasing the bioavailability of Cd. This can lead to high plant Cd concentrations. This research aimed to test whether liming-induced increases in pH in mixed crops of clovers and ryegrasses reduced forage Cd concentrations. A greenhouse pot trial applied lime at three rates (0, 1, and 2% of soil dry weight) to eight different plant treatments-four as monocultures (perennial ryegrass [ L.], Italian ryegrass [ Lam.], white

Four Haylages, One Metabonome: Defining Diet Driven Metabolic Shifts in Ponies.

Haylage is widely fed to all categories of stabled horses across Europe and New Zealand. Haylage can vary from high energy nutrient dense forage to low energy highly fibrous fodder, yet little is known about the impact different haylages have on metabolism in horses. This study provides the first direct comparison of feeding four different haylages: early cut (Lolium multiflorum), later cut (Lolium perenne) rye grass (R1 and R2); early and late cut meadow grass (M1 and M2), on urinary and faecal metabonomics, in ponies at maintenance.
